Broken Hearts

I cannot believe how many broken hearts there are all over the world right now with the new covid restrictions.

Flights to and from the entire Southern African region cancelled, draconian new quarantining and testing laws, the debacle is so harrowing for families who have already not seen one another for over two years.

Everyone has a sorrow, Grannies, Grandpas, children, grandchildren, dogs and cats. The tales are too heart rending and history will hang its head in shame.

Plans have been made for months, nay years, excited children, ecstatic grandparents, anxious parents. Plans to visit the Falls, The Kruger, Hwange, the Cape, and most of all...plans to GO HOME after 24 months of absence.

Top Virologists are pleading with the powers that be, that all this is just not necessary, but no one wants to take responsibility. Governments make sweeping, statements and draconian laws and then cannot implement them, it's an absolute fiasco and it's yet another blow that has brought loneliness, desperation, sorrow heartache and grief.

Where will it all end.

N.B.WEDNESDAY 8 DECEMBER AT N.B. 6.00 P.M. VERDI: AIDA
Aida was first performed on 24 December 1871and one of the most enduring myths in classical music is that Verdi wrote it for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. It's a good story but unfortunately it's not true - though, to be fair, Verdi was invited to compose an inaugural hymn for that occasion, but he declined. And he was commissioned to write an opera in celebration of the opening of the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo in 1871 which is how Aida came to be written, the quintessential opera in so many ways featuring a larger-than-life story in an exotic world alongside some of Verdi's greatest music.
- This would have to be one of the best productions of this great opera - the stage work and of course the singers: what more could one want [Amazon]
- Aida doesn't necessarily demand spectacular staging, but a good performance thrives on it. Spectacular this certainly is, with vast authentically modelled sets rising and falling on the Met's awesome stage machinery - plus real horses. The performance approaches the same epic scale [Gramophone]
- Levine's powerful and starrily cast DVD of Aida brings a grandly traditional staging...Zajac is a vibrant, powerful Ameri's, and Sherrill Milnes is a magnificent Amonasro...Levine is in his element, drawing warm and dramatic playing and singing from his formidable team at the Met. [Penguin Guide]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY9 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. EMMA
Emma is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novel by Andrew Davies. Emma Woodhouse has a rigid sense of propriety as regards matrimonial alliances . Unfortunately she insists on matchmaking for her less forceful friend, Harriet, and so causes her to come to grief. Through the sharp words of Mr. Knightley, and the example of the opinionated Mrs. Elton, someone not unlike herself, Emma's attitudes begin to soften..
- This version of Emma is the best! Kate Beckinsale is so charming and funny. [Amazon]
- Emma is a feast for the eyes and a balm for the heart. [San Francisco Chronicle]
- It is understated and sly, loaded with a sense that even a society as well-ordered as Emma's leaves plenty of room for comic misjudgements and happy endings. [New York Times]
Admission: US$2.00 [free to Film Members]

THURSDAY 16 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. THE JUNGLE BOOK
Raised by a family of wolves since birth, Mowgli must leave the only home he's ever known when the fearsome tiger Shere Khan unleashes his mighty roar. Guided by a no-nonsense panther and a free-spirited bear, the young boy meets an array of jungle animals, including a slithery python and a smooth-talking ape. Along the way, he learns valuable life lessons as his epic journey of self-discovery leads to fun and adventure.
- As lovely to behold as it is engrossing to watch, The Jungle Book is the rare remake that actually improves upon its predecessors. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- The latest incarnation of The Jungle Book - almost half a century after Disney's much-loved musical cartoon - is a stunner. [Times (UK]
- Favreau's reinvention of a beloved '60s classic is delightfully entertaining... bordering on perfection... [leonardmaltin.com]
Admission: $2.00 [Free to Film Members]

FRIDAY 17 DECEMBER AT 6.30 P.M. MUSIC BY SAINT-SAENS
Camille Saint-Saens died a hundred years ago on 16 December 1921 and is perhaps one of the most underrated of all composers. The programme celebrates one of the most consummately skilled of all the great composers with some of his best-known and most attractive music works including:
Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor (Artur Rubinstein)
Le Route d'Omphale - Symphonic Poem
Piano Concerto No.5 in F major - 'Egyptian' (Aldo Ciccolini)
Symphony No.3 in C minor - 'Organ Symphony'
- Incredible presentation [of Concerto No.2] by this great pianist at the age of 88!!
- At 88, Rubinstein is still magically fluent and elegant in the Saint-Saens. Twilight performance, but what a sunset! [BBC Music]
- The Saint-Saens [Symphony No.3] is persuasive and vivid. [Rhinegold.co.uk]
Admission: $2.00 [free to Red Carpet Members]

Lindsay Anne Bullivant

Lindsay Anne Bullivant, much loved wife of Michael and mother of Robin, died peacefully on 26 November, now at peace after too many years of a cruel illness. She will be remembered as an inspiring teacher, an outstanding seamstress, a superb cook and a rock of support to Michael over forty years of musical endeavour. As one of their musical friends wrote, 'I have such fond memories of Lindsay - quietly making everyone so welcome, cooking all those delicious meals, listening to our endless stories, always attentive, always so kind, always ready to help.'

Michael Stephen van Rooyen

Michael Stephen van Rooyen (37) son of Hilda van Rooyen, passed away on Monday night 29.11.21 after 6 years with Multiple Sclerosis. His pain and suffering is now over, he rests in peace.

His memorial service will be held at Sharon Tabernacle on
Friday 3/12/2021- 10am in North End, with the burial at Athlone Cemetery, followed by teas at Sharon Tabernacle.

He leaves behind a 12 year old daughter, Jessica, whom he loved dearly.

Michael, you were brave and dignified, uncomplaining, and an example to all sufferers. I am so proud to have been your Mother, you taught me so much. I love you - you live in my heart.

Take your rest my precious son, in God's beautiful garden, you deserve it.
I love you.
Mommy.

Knowing that the lockdown has given folk time to sort out cupboards, garages etc - please have a look at our Charity Shop List and our Kennel Wish List - you may be surprised how many unwanted items to you - are just what we are needing here at the kennels!

Shop
All the volunteers who work at the charity shop deserve a big pat on the back, but they DO need items to sell! - apparently the shelves are rather bare, so they would appreciate any unwanted saleable household goods, such as ornaments, glassware, crockery, pictures, clothing, garden tools, small items of furniture, jam jars for the jam makers! - in fact anything they can sell to make money to help the kennels.
They have Ecocash for convenience - items can be dropped off at the Charity shop - 127e,Robert Mugabe Way.
