A winters day

This year there have been some particularly chilly and windy winter's days in Bulawayo. As the pundits say 'there is snow on the Berg in S.A.!'

In the Suburbs the gardeners all water their verges 'upwind' and none of them are looking forward to undertaking the thankless task of sweeping up the millions of Jacaranda leaves that will be soon falling from the leaves like rain. July is when the Jacaranda enthusiasts start 'Jacaranda Spotting ', its always a competition in Bulawayo to see who spots the first Jacaranda in flower!!

As I bundle off to the shop in my nice toasty car, my heart breaks for the tramps who were all lined up in a supine position on the lush grass in the sunny Centenary Park. How cold their night must have been for them to all be fast asleep at ten am in the morning.
Their ragged coats hug their thin emaciated shoulders as the sun shines on them and hopefully warms their frail bones.

Further down past the park slog the ice cream vendors, pushing their ice cream carts slowly and laboriously up Leopold Takawira Avenue in the vain hope that someone might buy an ice cream on this freezing cold day!

I notice that the cannas have been cut down in the park near the fountain, but the park is bright and festive with multitudinous yellow daisy buses and red salvia.

On the bridge outside the Theatre sits another tramp, leaning against the warm brick of the bridge, stuffing his mouth with a bag of rotten Maze oranges someone has put in one of the City Rubbish Bins. The skins are scattered all around him, but on my way back home, an hour or so later, I noticed he has scooped them all up out of sight!

The petrol attendant has ice cold hands when I handed him the car keys to unlock the petrol cap, and all the taxi drivers are sitting in their nice warm cars instead of sitting outside on benches, gossiping as they normally do.

The vendors selling their corn curls, cigarettes and sweets on their makeshift tables, are sheltering against the wind up against one of the City's plastic trash bins, their wares in the shade but their bodies in the sun.

The security guards outside shops and business premises are stamping their feet and blowing on there hands, silently saying thank you that they were the day shift and not the night shift!!

By eleven o'clock I have taken off my coat, by twelve midday my next layer is lying on the seat of the car.

The wind has dropped, the cold almost gone, to return again at around four pm. The tramps have woken and are sunning themselves upright.

It is another perfect Zimbabwean day.

Gerry Whitaker

It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Gerald Goldsmith Whitaker (Gerry) in the early hours of Monday 5th July 2021 at age 92.
Gerry was a man of honour and integrity and his grace, old world charm and impeccable manners will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Gerry was GM and later MD of Bulawayo Bottlers from 1975 until he retired in 1994 after successfully negotiating the sale of Bulawayo Bottlers to Delta Corporation. During his tenure as CEO of Bulawayo Bottlers the company held Coca-Cola franchises for the Matabeleland and Midlands territories and won numerous regional awards for product quality and marketing excellence within the Central Africa Region. He was greatly admired and respected by his peers within the Coca-Cola bottling industry of Southern Africa for his knowledge of the business, the results he achieved and his humanity.

Gerry is survived by daughters Shandy, Kelly and families in Australia.

RIP Gerry. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Allen, Les and families.

COLIN MERVYN KENDALL 1940 - 2021

It's with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Kendall on the 2nd of June 2021 in Bulawayo, after battling a long illness.

Born in Bulawayo in 1940, Colin lived his whole life here. He attended Northlea School , rising to become Head Boy and excelling in multiple 1st team sports. He attended university in Cape Town before returning to Bulawayo to work for the CSC, then joined his father Nap in the family business IMF. Colin was a great sportsman representing Rhodesia at Nuffield cricket week, Rhodesia (and later Zimbabwe Masters) in men's hockey, and was a regular at Queens Sport Club in his early years. Colin married Valerie Inskipp in December 1965, going on to have 3 children Shirlley, Dean and Donald.

He was a loving husband and father, extremely generous with his time and resources, principled, and imbued with a wicked sense of humour. He certainly made an impact on those he came across in life, and his loss has been felt immensely.

Rest in Peace

Alex Masterson
Incredibly sad to learn of the tragic passing of dear friend & colleague, Alex Masterson.

He had a wonderful sense of humour, a keen interest in birdlife & was a good human.
May his dear soul rest in peace.

A TRIBUTE TO ALEX MASTERSON

It is with heavy hearts that we honour and say good bye to
ALEXANDER NORMAN BERNARD MASTERSON (1936 - 2021)

Alex passed away in Harare, Zimbabwe on 24 June 2021 after struggling with a prolonged illness. He was born in Gwanda, Zimbabwe. His father was a District Officer in the Government Internal Affairs Department and was stationed in the country districts.

From an early age Alex developed an interest in birds following in the footsteps of his father who was a keen birder. Alex attended St. George's College in Harare and in 1949 he wrote an article for the college magazine on the birds found on the school campus and in the adjacent Botanical Gardens. He later studied Law at the University of Cape Town.

In 1952 when the Rhodesian Ornithological Society was formed, Alex was one of the first to become a member. His aunt took out a life membership for him as a 21st birthday gift which he felt was an excellent investment on her part. He was renowned for his vast knowledge of cisticolas and other wetland species. He could recognise and mimic their calls and more than once he was heard to say, when asked to identify a certain bird: 'I'll only know when it talks to me.'

In the early 1980s Alex became the President of the Ornithological Society of Zimbabwe (ZOS), and again between 2004 - 2005 he was the President of Birdlife Zimbabwe when ZOS evolved into a nature conservation organisation and changed name. Alex also contributed extensively to BLZ nature conservation work - pro bono - in his professional legal capacity, particularly for wetland conservation.

Alex was co-author 'LBJs Made Easier,' together with Ken Newman, Derek Solomon, and David Jackson. He had one of the largest, most impressive, legal, private bird egg collections in the country.

With a few select birding friends he would go away for a weekend or longer to go birding and he recorded a number of first sightings of birds in Zimbabwe. He also recorded an impressive number of floral species. Alex spoke fluent Shona and knew the history and customs of the Shona people.

A most dignified gentleman, Alex will be remembered for his birding knowledge, but he will also be remembered for his kindness and his willingness to help anyone in whatever capacity he was able. He is a huge loss to his family, to Birdlife Zimbabwe and to the many lives he touched.

We will miss you greatly Alex. Rest in peace. Sent from my iPhone

Appeal from BULAWAYO SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

Knowing that the lockdown has given folk time to sort out cupboards, garages etc - please have a look at our Charity Shop List and our Kennel Wish List - you may be surprised how many unwanted items to you - are just what we are needing here at the kennels!

Shop
All the volunteers who work at the charity shop deserve a big pat on the back, but they DO need items to sell! - apparently the shelves are rather bare, so they would appreciate any unwanted saleable household goods, such as ornaments, glassware, crockery, pictures, clothing, garden tools, small items of furniture, jam jars for the jam makers! - in fact anything they can sell to make money to help the kennels.
They have Ecocash for convenience - items can be dropped off at the Charity shop - 127e,Robert Mugabe Way.

Kennel and Clinic Wish List
If folk could donate any one of these items, that would be fantastic!
Old blankets and towels, Newspapers,Tinned + Dried Pet Food for Dogs and Cats, Fly Smear, Old Crepe Bandages, Latex Gloves, Face Masks, Paper Towels, Disinfectant Wipes, Antiseptic Wound Spray, Dressings, Toys for Cats, Cat Carriers, Dog Boxes or Cages, Fly Spray, Bolt Cutters, Brooms both Soft and Stiff, Disposable Aprons, off cuts of Foam Rubber to cover donkey harnesses.. all can be dropped off at the Kennels, cnr of Magazine and Khami Road - if you can donate just one of these items.. it will improve the welfare of at least one animal - Thank You!
