The Bottom Line

Picture 'Little Old Lady' pulling up to the ATM in Bulawayo. The first time in 12 months I might add, so not sure what to expect....

Very aware of the poverty that surrounds the country, clutching handbag under one arm, and deftly and hurriedly manoeuvring my ATM card, which is then declined.....

Humpf, I checked the expiration date on the card and noted hysterically that it expires in 2040 !! Probably well after I have expired I chortled inwardly......

The folk in Zimbabwe are delightful, old friends inside the bank welcomed me with genuine fondness and a teller even accompanied me outside to the ATM to explain the 'new withdrawal rules' to me.

Apparently cash is to be drawn in three separate amounts of 800, 800 and then 400 Zimbabwe dollars!!! All was going well until I had punched in the first 800 tranch, and the machine advised me to remove my card, I thought the Fire Brigade had drawn up behind me!

The ringing noise was deafening and any wanna-be bank robber would have been immediately alerted that money was being drawn from the ATM. I hurriedly stuffed a copious number of notes (all in 20 dollar denominations) in my bag and furtively continued with the next 800 tranch! Again that fearful screeching, jangling cacophony, and by now I am thoroughly rattled. One more to go, making sure the coast was clear, I punched in the final 400. More thunderous staccato foghorn music, by now my bag was bulging with notes.

Now this excruciating, vociferous drama all took place in order to extract from the ATM, the gargantuan sum of 2,000.00 Zimbabwe dollars..which to the uninitiated, amounts to a princely US$20.00.......and one is allowed the pleasure of this transaction, but once a week!!

Note to self, find a bigger bag next time.

THURSDAY 15 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. THE EAGLE
In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia..

'The Eagle' appeals to my older self while retaining what made my childhood reading so stirring. [Guardian]
Has all the ingredients of a terrific adventure thriller: an epic quest narrative, strong characters, the tangled interplay of pride, loyalty and masculinity. [Daily Telegraph]
'The Eagle' is a rip-snorting adventure tale of the sort made before CGI, 3-D and alphabet soup in general took the fun out of movie-going. [Chicago Sun-Times]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 16 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. STRAVINSKY: THE FIREBIRD / PETRUSHKA / THE RITE OF SPRING
Igor Stravinsky died fifty years ago on 6 April 1971 and the event is marked by performances of the three great ballets he wrote for Diaghilev between 1910 and 1913. All three come in revivals of the original choreography, two from the Mariinsky Ballet and one from the Bolshoi.
'The Firebird' is a Russian folk tale which was commissioned from the young Stravinsky by Diaghilev and premiered in June 1910. The ballet was an immediate success and the Ballets Russes enabled the choreographer Michel Fokine to bring to this enterprise the right amount of novelty needed to captivate but not alienate the audience. It was a total success. 'Petrushka' followed a year later with the choreography again by was again by Fokine in 1911 with the great Nijinsky as Petrushka and was another huge success but the premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' on 6 May 1913 with choreography by Nijinsky by contrast caused one of the great scandals of musical history. The audience was shocked by the primitive violence of the ballet and the music. It was so radically rejected that the ballet was taken off after eight performances and it was only a century later that the original choreography was recreated, as seen in this performance.

- Anyone who wants these two ballets on DVD ['Firebird', 'Rite'], need look no further. The dancing is of the standard one expects from the Mariinsky, the productions are a treat for the eye while the sound and the photography are stunning. Five stars plus for me, no doubt about it. [Amazon]
- This is a very special DVD. Valery Gergiev leads his Mariinsky Orchestra in splendid performances of both ballets and both feature brilliant choreography, as well as colourful sets and costuming. [Classical Net]
- 'Petrushka' portrays a busy Shrovetide fair, complete with live Catherine wheels and falling snow towards the end - although it's the vivid kookiness of its central scenes (set inside the puppet's apartments) that make this piece so compelling. [Amazon]
- The dancing is fluid and the plot flows freely[in 'Petrushka'] without the usual over-use of primp and pose choreography that can often become tedious and distracting. The sets and costumes, patterned after the original sketches for their turn-of-the-twentieth-century premieres are stunning, helping to bring you into the fairy tale worlds presented [E-Bay]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 22 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. JACK AND SARAH.
Jack and Sarah is a British romantic comedy written and directed by Tim Sullivan and starring Richard E. Grant, Samantha Mathis, Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Cherie Lunghi and Ian McKellen. After his wife, Sarah (Imogen Stubbs), dies during childbirth, Jack (Richard E. Grant), an attorney, has his world thrown into a whirlwind. Unequipped to handle the pressures of a demanding career and raising an infant daughter on his own, Jack finds help through a local vagrant (Ian McKellen) and submits to hiring a nanny. But the woman he hires is a waitress (Samantha Mathis) who is entirely inexperienced, much to the disapproval of Jack's mother, Margaret (Judi Dench) - and, as Sarah adopts Amy as substitute mother, Jack starts to look at Amy with different eyes...

- Sparky playing, a generally sharp script and bright packaging add up to a neat little winner. [Variety]
- All that needs to be said about this film is great cast and completely and absolutely heart-warming. 10 out of 10 feel good factor. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- Do not expect to be enlightened but do expect some laughter and tears, it is romantic and emotional (his secretary is a hoot, his boss is a bitch who you love to see dumped on her tight snooty ass!), a nice two hours to spend coming away with a smile! [IMDb]
- Jack and Sarah is charming, touching and funny. A wonderful feel-good movie. It will make you smile. [Amazon]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 23 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. ROSSINI: LA CENERENTOLA
Rossini's music has an irrepressible quality, bubbling up effortlessly throughout this retelling of the story of Cinderella. The invention is unstoppable, from Cenerentola's plaintive song about a king who loves a poor girl to the lavish coloratura of her final aria when goodness triumphs and all ends, for some at any rate, happily ever after. But this is no glibly resolved fairy-tale. Rossini's creation dispenses with whimsy and magical intervention. Instead we are presented with genuine human predicaments. The wicked stepmother becomes a snobbish bully of a stepfather and the fairy godmother is transformed into the Prince's tutor, intent on finding a girl who may be worthy of his pupil's love. The dark edges of the story are punctuated throughout by tender emotion and sparkling comedy in this fresh and vibrant but timelessly elegant Glyndebourne production from May 2005 by Sir Peter Hall.

- This is a performance that meets the Glyndebourne gold standard.. Hall has decided to keep it real and produced something understated, sensitive and thus deeply pleasurable. [Daily Telegraph]
- Some found Peter Hall's staging too dark and serious, but for me it was an invigorating evening. ... Ruxandra Donose is winning in the title role. Five stars. [BBC Music Magazine]
- This is a truly marvellous performance on all counts - staging, conducting and singing. [Gramophone]
- In short, this is a brilliant Cenerentola - full of wit, intelligence, and musical excellence. [Amazon]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 29 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. RUNAWAY JURY
'Runaway Jury' is an adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller starring John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz. After a workplace shooting in New Orleans, a trial against the gun manufacturer pits lawyer Wendell Rohr (Hoffman) against shady jury consultant Rankin Fitch (Hackman), who uses illegal means to stack the jury with people sympathetic to the defence. But when juror Nicholas Easter (Cusack) and his girlfriend, Marlee (Rachel Weisz), reveal their ability to sway the jury into delivering any verdict they want, a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game begins.

- The movie hums along with a kind of sublime craftsmanship, fuelled by the consistent performances of Hackman and Hoffman (in their first film together), the remarkable ease of John Cusack, and the juicy typecasting in the supporting roles. [Chicago Sun-Times]
- Efficient, precise, carefully calibrated and terrifically entertaining. [Washington Post]
- 'Runaway Jury' hooks the audience, and after 10 minutes there's no looking back. [San Francisco Chronicle]
- A breezily entertaining courtroom thriller that again clarifies why Grisham sells so well. [New York Daily News]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 30 APRIL AT 6.00 P.M. CONCERT: MOZART, BRAHMS AND MUSSORGSKY.
The programme consists of music from two separate concerts, excerpts from which were shown at the end of last year as part of the Beethoven 250 celebrations and includes:
- Mozart: Symphony No. 33 in B flat major, K319
- Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98
The Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Carlos Kleiber
- Mussorgsky, orch.Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition
The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel

- Brahms 4th Symphony is unquestionably a major masterpiece, and in Kleiber's hands it receives the closest I know to a definitive interpretation. [Amazon]
- This is one of Carlos Kleiber's last concerts and he looks elderly and frail (he was just 66) but there is a special sense of occasion here: the orchestra and audience clearly love Kleiber, the orchestra playing with a special spirit and elan for him. [swapadvd.com]
- Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' elicits rousing playing from Dudamel's young instrumentalists. [Presto Music]
- The highlight of this concert is the fantastic performance of Pictures at an Exhibition played by a huge orchestra with massive strings including 14 double basses. This dazzling performance is a tour de force of orchestral virtuosity, tossed off with the greatest of ease by the magnificent young players. [classicalcdreview.com]

Admission: US$1.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

3) Congratulations

4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Our much loved friend, Patricia Matheson passed away peacefully in Bishops Stortford, England just a
few weeks before her 92nd birthday. Sister Patricia Matheson was in charge of the Private Ward at UBH, Bulawayo, for several decades. She was generous, had boundless energy and was much loved and respected by her patients, professional colleagues and all who knew her.

Patricia leaves behind her beloved God Children, their families and her many friends. One of her greatest joys was a love of music. As an active member of The Academy of Music she was often to be heard singing in the chorus or in the audience enjoying beautiful music.

Being outgoing she also loved a good party. We think of her doing just that as she is reunited with her dearest late husband, Duncan Matheson. Fly with the angels Patricia.

RIP Prince Philip, 99.

A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty & was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign.
A very sad day for us all.

BRUCE LONGHURST

Trusted friend and colleague for so many, many years.

Bruce was one of the world's true gentlemen, a brilliant lawyer, a friend,
he will be such a loss to our dwindling community.

Deepest Sympathy to Vickie and to the family.
Rest in peace after so much pain for so many years.

Rick and Magaret

It is with a very heavy heart that we at LONGHURST, BOYCE & Co. announce the passing of Mr Bruce Longhurst. He was a top Zimbabwean Lawyer with a brilliant legal mind. He will be greatly missed by all of us at LONGHURST, BOYCE & Co. and by his family, friends and clients. We shall soldier on in honour of him and will always have him in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.
