Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home - the Edith Duly Nursing home ++++ EDITORIAL THE PRIVY COUNCIL It would appear that Australians and Americans have different posteriors to we Zimbabweans..... Now this is rather a delicate topic ....... but for years now, going way back to the sixties, we folk in Zimbabwe, upon visiting our "comfort stations" have been exposed to an unusual type of loo paper...... It all began in the days of sanctions before the dreaded UDI days. Before that our rear ends were pampered and spoilt, just like every one else's the world over. But when sanctions came, we were a resilient bunch and our manufacturers very wisely began to "save paper" They began to use recycled paper ( ) waste paper ( ) heaven forbid !!! Bright pink, blue and green toilet tissue of dubious quality replaced the soft silky loo paper of the past and we, in our patriotic fervour, naturally accepted this assault on our buttocks. After all it has saved the country countless millions in forex thus allowing us to spend our booty on more important imported items. And think of how many trees we have saved, I mean after all, what did one use for this most necessary application before the invention of toilet tissue Trees are important, foreign currency is important, but hang on, how much longer are we going to have to subject our derrieres to this peculiar sort of torture. Apart from the fact that this abrasive item clogs the loos, it also dyes our unmentionables a strange colour !! How I love to visit more affluent countries where the loo paper is downy soft, printed with delicate dolphins or roses and you don't need twenty yards of the stuff with which to do the necessary !! It was the visiting offspring who brought it to my attention, I mean after all one gets used to wartime spartan living doesn't one A deputation of little girls, visitors from far off climes, approached mother with fists full of US and Aussie dollars and suggested that they would be in charge of the loo tissue purchasing in the future, for at least the duration of their visit !! They told me in no uncertain terms that their sweet little pink callipygian cheeks had become used to being pandered to, and that no more were they going to subject their Australian and American butts to this peculiar brand of Zimbabwe torture... And so we sallied forth to the store with the imported goods, the store where one needs one's BIG cheque book, and there it was. The quilted quality loo paper that thrifty, miserly Mum had always refused to put in her shopping trolly. Four times the cost of the local loo rolls, it screamed at me from the bottom (No pun intended) of the trolly, I had to rip the price tag off the minute we got home in the fear that anyone would see just how much we were spending on the stuff. But the girls were happy thank goodness. They told me in no uncertain terms that their sweet little cheeks had become used to being pandered to, and that their suitcases would, in future, contain only soft luxurious loo rolls when they next come home for the holidays !! Come on Zimbabwe tissue pundits, why not let us be privy to your secrets, let us into your closet, why be the butt of our jokes, get with it and give us a break !! ++++ WATCHDOG ++++ 2) Notices and Events ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO Tel: 60684 / 67195 E-mail: zamfriends@gatorzw.co.uk The lockdown and curfew have been eased and teaching will resume in line with the re-opening of schools. Please email me, David Jeffreys, at: agapanthus26@gmail.com The Three C''s I have been inspired - by a book I read recently - to find out more more about two cousins of my late father who were once boarders at St. Peter's Diocesan School in Bulawayo. Although Ulendo, by Malcolm Alexander, (Aldridge Press London, 2018) deals princpally with the career of his great uncle, Claude Oldfield - and of what happened to him in Zambia during and after the First World War - the story also touches on the lives of two young women - Ann and Audrey Jeffreys - whom he knew as young children. In its pages a story unfolds, of disappointment and loss - and of how changes, chances and choices marred each of their lives. I am told that, on leaving St Peters at the end of 1940, Ann settled in Cape Town, where she met and fell in love with Pierce Thomas de la Garde Grissell, then a midshipman with HMS Dragon. A year of relative happiness ensued, before, in October 1942, he boarded HMT Orcades, a recently requisitioned troopship, en route for Liverpool. As detailed in accounts - widely available on the internet - when only a day out of Cape Town, and zig-zagging alone, the ship encountered, Kapitanleutnant Carl Emmerman, in U-172, who put two torpedoes into her port side, disabling her steering and port engine. With the Orcades now travelling in circles, Captain Charles Fox, acted quickly, and a model evacuation of passengers ensued. Then, with only a skeleton crew aboard, he turned his attention to saving the vessel. The port engine was successfully restarted and and an attempt was made to return to Cape Town, but, before the U-boat could be outrun, the Orcades was hit by a further four torpedoes, which sent her to the depths. Distress signals had been sent and a few hours later, the Narwik, mastered by Captain Czeslaw Zawada, arrived on the scene, but, finding and rescuing the lifeboats in rough seas - in the dark - in the presence of a U-boat - amidst debris and oil - was an incredibly difficult operation - and, despite truly heroic efforts, it seems that three lifeboats and 45 people drifted off, never to be seen again. Pierce Thomas de la Garde Grissell was among them. Bereavement affects people in different ways and the loss of her first love - and the manner of his passing - appear to have cast a long shadow over Ann's life. In none of her subsequent relationships does she quite seem to have found a refuge from the void left by this disaster. In January 1945, she left Cape Town to marry Robert Hodgetts, then a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. They lived at West End House, in Arbory Street, in Castletown, on the Isle of Man and together had one daughter, Gillian, but soon separated. Subsequently, she married, in September 1950, in London, George Budibent, an engineer, with 'a naval background', living with him for a while at 19, Porchester Square. Then, in June 1956, she married Colin Gardner, in Gosport. They moved to New Zealand, living first at 4, Tuahine Crescent, in Gisborne and then at 48 Alabama Road, in Blenheim, where Gillian attended Marlborough Girls College. In January 1967, Ann married David May and lived with him in Wellington, until, finally, in 1971, she separated for the last time and returned to England. On the voyage home, she became acquainted with Patrick Rattigan, an officer in the merchant navy and, together, they eventually settled at 195, Sheffield Road, in Glossop. Patrick died in 1999, and Ann, in 2007. Her daughter Gillian, predeceased her. What of Ann's younger sister, Audrey, who left St Peter's in December 1943 In her case, love did not beckon and she remained with her parents, Robert and Dorothy Jeffreys, following them as they moved first from Ndola to Cape Town and then, finally, after a spell in Devon, to London. Perhaps influenced by Robert, who had once been a magistrate in Zambia, it seems that she attempted to study Law, but , precisely where or when this happened is not clear. It seems she did not quite complete her studies and appears to have settled for a nine-to-five job at a local office of the Department of Health and Social Security, in Kensington. For a while it looked as though marriage was going to pass her by completely, but, then, in the mid-1960's, on the chance introduction of a work colleague, she met a gentleman, David Arkley, then working locally as a Manager in the provisions trade. They married in 1964, in Kensington and settled in 11 Aubrey Road. Sadly, the marriage did not herald a happier period in her life and, as time passed, it seems that she increasingly came to rely on alcohol as a source of solace. Just 11 years later, in January 1975, Audrey succumbed to hepatic failure. She was 48 and had no children. Precisely why happiness had eluded her is not quite clear. It may be that while Ann had a hard edge and was able to carve out a path for herself, Audrey was more inclined to accept what life offered her - and bottle up her feelings if she did not like the result. In Ulendo Malcolm Alexander advances another reason - hitherto not discussed - which may also have had an important bearing on her life. People are different, their lives inscrutable and knowing quite why some never find their place in this world, remains a mystery. After an idyllic upbringing in Africa, how well would anyone adapt to the confines of a life in Europe It might be tempting to think that both Audrey and Ann lacked backbone and were unable 'to stay the course'. My own view, though, is that so much of what happens to us comes down to mere chance and that all too often we are caught up in events much larger than ourselves. On visiting Ann, about a year or so before her death, my abiding impressions were of someone who, at heart, had plenty of common good sense. Did she appreciate high standards Certainly. Was she a little pretentious Perhaps - she abhorred tea bags and lace curtains and adored Radio 3. But weak and indecisive I think I would have to say 'No'. Her favourite quotation: Nil Desperandum! spoke of a willingness to persevere. In his account of St Peter's Diocesan School (Create Space Independent Publishing, September 17, 2009) Matt le Tutla talks of a 'forgotten' school. I trust that Ann and Audrey have not been completely forgotten too Photos on request. Did you ever attend St Peters Or do you know someone who once went there If you have any memories of Ann or Audrey Jeffreys, would you please let me know - I would love to hear from you.
