SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD!

I am constantly amazed at just how brilliant a mother my daughter is with her 19 month old son, (my Wee Boy!)

As a mother myself, I still look on my own children as my Babies, and now my Babies have their own Babies!!

I must admit I do not agree with some of the Modern Methods for bringing up babies, but Modern Mums are lucky that they have the whole world wide web to confide in, if they need an answer, the WWW via Google, is a great source of information.

In my day all we had was Doctor Benjamin Spock!

Dr. Benjamin Spock has been at the forefront of child care since he first made a splash seven decades ago. His advice has been religiously followed by some, dismissed as kooky by others; controversy has swirled around his ideas for decades. But despite the controversy, today - years after his death March 15, 1998 - new parents still follow his advice. They just might not realise they do.

When Dr. Spock's book was published in 1946, its simple core message was revolutionary: "Don't be afraid to trust your own common sense." Between that and his insistence that parents should show love and affection to their children rather than constant strict discipline, Dr. Spock challenged the conventional wisdom of early strict, spartan, unbending, cold, 20th-century childrearing like no one else.

Today, the basic tenets of Dr. Spock's child care philosophy might seem obvious to most parents. Hug your child. Tell him he's special and loved and unique. Feed him when he's hungry. Discipline with words, not corporal punishment. But in 1946, this was new.

Parents had long been encouraged not to shower their children with affection as this would make them weak and unprepared for the world. Feeding and naps were to be done on a strict schedule, regardless of the baby's immediate needs. And a child who just got a mild spanking for an offence got off easy - physical punishment was the norm.

Spock changed all that with his encouragement for parents to follow their instincts, be attentive to the baby's needs, and be generous with affection.

Although babies have been around for millenniums now, advice on how to bring up a child, changes every so often, but then the Bog Pendulum swings back again!!

SheWhoUsedToWear Kevlar has adamant ideas about her son and once upon a time, when I quietly ventured an opinion, her retort was 'Mother the average lifespan in Zimbabwe is 37 years, here in the USA it is 79 years!!

I must admit the AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) and I have done some silent fighting, I fight with them daily as to their proposed strict routines, but SheWhoUsedToWearKevlar usually abides by their suggestions -BUT ONLY TO A POINT thank goodness!! Common sense usually comes up trumps!!

I try to be a good Granny and not to voice my opinion on the up-bringing of My Grandchild, one knows one's place, although I would far rather be a Mother than a Mother-In-Law!!

Watchdog !!

Congratulations to the Chimanimani Tourist Association (CTA) for winning the achievement in environmental awareness and action award at the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism annual awards last week. The CTA won the award for their ongoing campaign to create awareness and action on the illegal and destructive mining activities taking place in the Chimanimani National Park. In continuing their good work, we'd like to introduce the Zimbabwe Mountain Guide Training Course - an initiative seeking to encourage the next generation of Zimbabweans to care for the mountains and ensure the area continues to be the place of wonder we know it to be. Thank you CTA for the opportunity to share the fantastic work you are doing in the region (reader, feel free to share and celebrate the positive impact CTA are doing in conserving the park).

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

WEDNESDAY 21 MARCH AT 5.15 P.M. STUDENT CONCERT
Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m.
The end-of-year concert will, as usual, feature Academy students as well as guest performers.
Admission free - donations gratefully received!

THURSDAY 22 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. DUNKIRK
Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.
'It is hard to imagine a better tribute to this victory of survival than Nolan's spare, stunning, extraordinarily ambitious film.' [The Atlantic]
'Heart-hammering and heroically British, this is Christopher Nolan at the peak of his powers.' [Telegraph]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 23 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. DEBUSSY: PELLEAS ET MELISANDE
A further celebration of Debussy with Pelleas et Melisande, his only completed opera although he had abandoned four other attempts by the time he attended the 1893 Paris premiere of Maurice Maeterlinck's play which exists in a mysterious and mystical atmosphere. This is wonderfully mirrored in Debussy's music which 'murmurs dreamily to itself, speaks or suggests in veiled tones, swells up for a moment and again subsides or dwindles down' [Adam Carse].
'A stellar cast lead a performance in which the subtle psychological and emotional strangeness of the opera is enhanced by Laurent Pelly's staging.' [Presto Classical]
'On the first night the audience cheered singers, orchestras and conductor unreservedly.' [Wiener Zeitung]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

SATURDAY 24 MARCH AT 5.30 P.M. CHOICE CHILDREN'S CHOIR: SOUNDS OF THE MOTHERLAND

Choice Children's Choir from Harare is touring Zimbabwe next week as part of its preparations for taking part in the World Choir Games (formerly known as the Choir Olympics).
It's the largest choir competition in the world and is this year taking place in Tshwane from 4 to 14 July. Their programme comprises choral arrangements from the traditional echoes of mbira music to powerful spirituals of Mark Hayes and everything in between. In a country filled with song and dance, we bring voices of Zimbabwe's rich heritage and people.
Come join us for an evening of song on our journey to the global stage of the World Choir Games.

Tickets: $5.00 - available in advance but unreserved seating. [Free to Red Carpet subscribers]

N.B. WEDNESDAY 28 MARCH AT 7.00 P.M. BRAHMS: A GERMAN REQUIEM / VERDI: FOUR SACRED PIECES
Brahms' 'A German Requiem' was first performed 150 years ago on Good Friday 1868. Partly inspired by the death of his mother, it sets texts from the Lutheran Bible and is not primarily a mass for the dead, rather it is intended as comfort for those who mourn and who feel the pain of the death of others.
'This is a very deeply felt account, sung and played and directed by Gergiev with intense conviction.' [BBC Music Magazine]
Verdi's "Four Sacred Pieces" are his last works and including settings of the 'Stabat Mater' and 'Te Deum' for chorus and orchestra. This performance is part of a Berlin Philharmonic Europakonzert from the Vasa Museum in Stockholm and the spectacular backdrop is a fully intact sailing ship - the Vasa - from the 17th century.
'This is a fine performance of Verdi's "Four Sacred Pieces", deeply involving spiritually, superbly sung, played and recorded. It is arguably the best yet recorded. The final "Te Deum" is so powerful that the audience gives the performers the highest compliment - a period of stunned silence before the rapturous applause.' [Amazon]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00)

Old Legs 2018 TOUR - A BHN Fund Raiser. The Cause, the Ride and the Riders
Hi
My name is Eric de Jong. I'm 58 and I have a blue bicycle. On April the 7th me, Bruce Fivaz, Dave Whitehead plus two support team leave Harare on the Old Legs 2018 Tour, and on the way through Bulawayo we will be joined by Neal Leach and another member of our support crew which complete the total compliment of the Old Legs 2018 Tour team, a tour that will take us 3000 kilometres on mountain bikes through Botswana and on to Cape Town. I'm doing the ride essentially because I am hard of hearing.
Bruce, David and I ride in a social group called The Herd. Every Saturday morning the Herd huff and puff thirty to forty kilometres, normally around the Mazowe Valley. Bruce and I mostly ride at the back of the group so we can sweep for stragglers and because you get to appreciate the views for longer going slowly at the back. David being a snake is normally out front.
On a fateful Saturday morning not too long ago, Bruce asked me if I would ride to Cape Town with him. I thought Bruce was inviting me for coffee after the ride and so said yes. I don't hear so good on a bike, mostly because of a wax build up and the sounds of heavy laboured breathing. Bruce did a double take and asked me if I was sure. Because I like coffee, I said, of course I'm sure.
At which point Bruce started prattling on about bucket lists and Botswana and the Northern Cape, etc etc, the word epic cropped up more than once but by then I'd fallen further behind, because of lagging legs and uphill bits, and was well out of earshot.
All was good until the end of the ride when my cup of coffee was replaced with a three thousand kilometre ride. Alas. By that time I was too knackered to run away. And so here I am, riding to Cape Town.

The Cause.
Because I have more reverse gears than an Italian war tank, I need a Cause to get me to pedal 3000 kilometres. And one of the best causes out there is the plight of the Zimbabwean pensioners. The generation that built our country have had their pensions, their life savings and their wealth eroded and reduced to nothing by thirty years of mismanagement and stupid ruinous economic policies. And the same stupid ruinous policies have scattered their families across the world, often leaving the elderly to fend for themselves.
Bulawayo Help Network are the leading charities supporting the aged in Zimbabwe, saving lives providing food, medicines and somewhere to call home. You can check out their projects on our Face Book page Old Legs 2018 Tour
It is our target to raise a minimum of $30,000 for BHN on the Old Legs 2018 Tour. If you want to donate or if you would like to become a sponsor, please contact me or Neal Leach on his cel phone +263 712 214 282. We can offer sponsors maximum brand exposure in the run up to and during the ride through the Old Legs website, facebook page, branded support vehicles, ride jerseys, etc.

We also hope our ride will inspire others to get off couches and onto their bikes, enjoying Africa and the outdoors and come along and ride with us for some of the way when we're in their area

The Ride.
Looking for positives, I have noted that Harare is 1400 meters above sea level and that Cape Town is at sea level. So technically we're talking a downhill ride.
Our route map picture is included with this story further down, and will take us through Kadoma, Gweru and Bulawayo and into Botswana via the Plumtree border post. We then head for Palapye and then onto Mahalype. At which point we will hang a right on to a quiet back road down to Moleopole which is thirty kilos west of Gabarone. We will detour into Gabarone for a day off, some hot water and some cold sustinance. Suitably fortified, we will press on to a place called Kanye, head west some more into the bottom bit of Kalahari and then we'll exit Botswana via the Bray Border Post. Once in SA, we head south, hopefully through a town called Hotazel (pronounced Hot As Hell) and then onto Kuruman for another day off, showers and more cold sustinance etc. Suitably invigorated we head west again until Upington at which point we'll turn left and head south into the Karoo by way of Brandvlei and Calvinia, along South Africa's longest sand road, past the Tankwa Nature Reserve. We pop out of the Karoo at Ceres. And then we head on down via towns like Rebeek Kasteel and Wellington and hey presto, we'll be at Cape Point, south of the Motyher City, Cape Town
We will be riding mountain bikes and road bikes, the former because of possibly dodgy sand roads on some legs where our MTBs will be needed. We plan to average 140 kilos a day. We want to avoid heavy traffic as much as possible. We want to squeeze in as much scenery as possible. Any route advice would be hugely appreciated. Likewise info on decent places to camp on route. And if you have any friends or relatives on the route who have an affinity for tired, sweaty elderly cyclists, we'd love to borrow them.

Because I've heard all Bruce's jokes and stories way more than once, it would be great if there are any cyclists out there who would join us on a leg. The more the merrier, especially on the last leg into Cape Town. We want to generate as much publicity and awareness for the plight of the Zimbabwean pensioners as possible.

The Team Cycling so far.
Bruce Fivaz is the boss of the Old Legs pelaton. Bruce will turn 72 in February. When not on his bicycle, Bruce is a vet. He has done loads of epic rides including a 900 kilometre tour of Nepal around the foothills of Mt Everest. Bruce is married with two daughters and grandchildren who call him Badger.

Eric 'Chicken Legs' de Jong. Aged 58, Eric has been riding socially for +/- the last 4 years. He has no idea where 'Chicken Legs' comes from as he far prefers the other bits on a roast Chicken. Eric has three Blue Cross rides - 500 kilometres from the lowest point in Zimbabwe to the highest- under his belt. Other notable sporting achievements include a starting berth in the Allan Wilson under 15 C rugby team which enjoyed a two match winning streak and a fifth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. Hopefully the Harare- Cape Town ride will be the first of many epic tours. When not falling off his bike, Eric grows cut flowers for export on a farm on the outskirts of Harare. He is married with 3 grown children and a pair of too cute granddaughters.

Dave Whitehead aged 44 is a full on bike nut. After a major health scare in 2010, Dave has ridden over 28000 kilometres in 959 Strava recorded rides, losing 15 plus kilos of beer belly fat in the process. Dave's bike malady is clearly getting worse. In 2017 alone, he spent 598 hours in the saddle, pedalling 11376 kilometres, climbing
83016 meters. Within the cycling world, people like Dave are known as snakes. In the real world, they're known as nuts. Thankfully Dave has a fully supportive partner, Sarah and beautiful daughter, Aurora, who motivate him to do his best and allow him the time to do all his training! Bruce and Eric fully expect Dave to get to Cape Town before them, unless they puncture his back tyre, repeatedly.

Neal Leach, aka Leachy, is 70 and has a red and white 29 inch soft nose, hard tail mountain bike and a Cyclocross road bike and will be joining us from the Bulawayo leg onwards and, when he is not on his MTB, is a professional cameraman and also a member of the 'In Search Of Africa' Luxury Tour planning outfit, who plan bespoke luxury tours for the rich and famous in Sub Sahara Africa. Neal has been riding for over 20 years, has 3 Blue Cross events under his belt (holds the BC Sheild for 2003) and a pile of various other local event medals festooning his bike wall memorabilia collection, which has not been added to for the past few years, why, we don't know!
We plan to have guest riders join us on many legs, such as Al Watermeyer who will ride the Harare to Bulawayo legs. Al was there when the first bike was invented. The Herd and Team Kadoma will join us on the first leg from Harare to Kadoma. We hope to be joined by a hundred riders plus for the last leg into Cape Town.
Jenny de Jong is the Seconder in Charge. Without her input and providing she doesn't get lost, the riders will die of malnutrition and exposure. Unfortunately there is every chance that Jenny will get lost as she is geographically challenged to say the least. Alas. Food wise Jenny will have her work cut for her. The riders can burn as many as 9000 calories per day, for 25 days, requiring five meals a day, often camping rough. But she is becoming a pro with 3 Blue Crosses under her belt and a life time of school sandwiches. Jenny runs a wholesale plant nursery whilst juggling a million hobbies and interests.

Jenny will be ably assisted by 30 year old Ryan Moss, a photographer, documentary maker and wannabe adventurer. Thankfully and unlike Jenny, Ryan knows how to read a GPS and will be able to find his way both in and out of Hotazel.
The Old Legs 2018 Tour will be an epic adventure for an epic cause. Please follow us. Please support us. We are pedalling for a great cause.
