1) Editorial

Granny Desperation!!

Even the purple profusion of the Jacarandas could not raise my spirits as we drove from the airport.

The golden Honeycombs of the Silver Birches, dripping with succulent honey, tried hard to tempt me our of my slough of despond, but failed.

It was only when I got home and walked out into my lush green garden, that my heart healed just a tiny bit - the beds were bursting with exuberance of amaryllis, calendula, roses, and begonias.

I was too late for the Namaqualand Daisies and the Wisteria, but my trusty gardener was kind enough to send me photos whilst I was away.

And so I healed slowly, bit by bit.

The rare yellow Clivia was extraordinary in its beauty, the amaryllis had outdone themselves, closeted in a harvest of stunning Crimson and Venetian red, with the odd stripy pink trumpets elbowing through.

The bees swarmed around the lavender bushes, spreading the soothing fragrance especially designed to sooth the soul, and the Burgundy Iceberg roses glared at me accusingly for not falling head over heels for them.

All this despair because I had to leave my brand new Grandchild in Atlanta, so very far away!!

She who Must Wear Kevlar sends a daily 'WhatsApp' video of Lincoln's newborn antics, and Granny and Grandpa play them over and over again their phones.

I remember distinctly being irritated by all my friends who had new Grandchildren, and they would supposedly 'entertain' me for hours with their 'Granny Brag Albums'.

Grrrrrr.... it was a monstrous thing to do to a Grandchildless couple!! But now we are as predictably besotted and also flash the latest photo much to the amusement of our friends!!

With modern technology one need not just have a couple of photos in a purse to show off, but one can produce 'iPhoto' with seven thousand photos of the Little Darling, including several lengthy videos.

Having bored me to tears with pictures of their grandchildren ad nauseam, its now my turn.

Hahhaha, revenge will be sweet!!

However, Scudder is murdered and Hannay is framed for the death by the 'sleepers' so flees to Scotland as he attempts to clear his name and to stop the agents...

Left alone since the disaster, the dinosaurs have flourished, and Hammond is anxious that the world see them in their 'natural' environment. He assembles a team to visit and document the area, but when they reach the island, they soon discover the presence of another group of people who are not there for biological data but instead have something more sinister in mind.
'A remarkably underrated film that's actually improved with age. The effects are still dazzling, the film-making is top notch...' [ChrisStuckmann.com, 26 May 2015]

5) Roses And Raspberries
Bulawayo Help Network is very grateful to Jock Cameron and Rudi Gouma who celebrated their 70 years on earth at OM's last Saturday. They asked their friends to donate to BHN in lieu of presents. What generous friends! We received a box containing $952. The BHN team is very appreciative and assures the Bulawayo community that every dollar is carefully used to support pensioners in need.

Please publish my thanks to the SPCA for a wonderful attitude and dedicated service to animals.

A week or so ago I was driving in to work on a Monday morning, and I passed a dog which had been badly smashed up by a car. The dog was lying on the side of the road, unable to move but still very much alive. This nasty accident had happened not long before I came along, on a bridge 30ks or so out of town, and I am ashamed to admit I did not have what it takes to stop and help the creature out of its misery myself. Instead I drove on to work and phoned the SPCA at 8am sharp. Well, Berry and Dumi were already on duty, and they took directions and agreed to go out and investigate at once. They were as good as their word, and when I phoned Berry later that day she told me that they had indeed had to put the dog down, and had brought its body back to the SPCA by 8:45am. Thank goodness for a service like this, and the speed, willingness and kindness with which this incident was handled. Hats off to the SPCA staff for alleviating animal suffering.

8) Bulawayo News

At Mpilo Children's Hospital on Friday, a tiny baby girl lay in the incubator, her fragile little chest under an almost translucent skin heaving with the effort of breathing. Yesterday, since she had been doing so well, she had been moved to a baby bed of her own, and I caught one of her first smiles. It broke my heart to know her mother will never see her smile: 29-year old Nikiwe, who had been ill at the time she fell pregnant, died the day after giving birth to her. For now all her little girl has is her name, Baby Nikiwe.

An amazing team of matrons and nurses care for Baby Nikiwe and the other babies in the prem baby ward. Under difficult conditions and intense work pressure they are loving, gentle and kind, and they, in turn, have an amazing crew of women working to help them and the babies. Baby Heroes Africa, through close contact with the nurses in the ward, identify particularly needy cases and put together care packages to get the mothers and their babies started. In the case of Baby Nikiwe, she had nothing, not even a nappy, until Baby Heroes delivered a baby bath full of goodies for her yesterday. A mother living under difficult circumstances who gave birth to twins two months ago also benefited from care packages for her little girls, as did a 15 year old mother with wide startled eyes.

Baby Nikiwe still needs help, though, and could be in hospital for a long time if no relatives come to claim her. The most urgent need is formula, and Baby Heroes is appealing to anyone for tins of Nan formula which can be dropped off at the offices at 269 Leopold Takawira Road, Kumalo.

Long queues at ORT IMMIGRATION and Transit are due to BIOMETRIC data capture

Dear Travellers,

Please be advised that ORT is currently undergoing BIOMETRIC migration. This is causing very long and slow queues at Immigration /Transit area.

Please see below extract from the Operations Manager OR Tambo:

Please note the further roll out of biometric systems at immigration services. By the end of this week the South African/PR Holders cubicles will have biometrics installed. The biometric system automatically discriminates whether a person is a foreigner or a SA citizen and the system does not require biometrics from SA citizens.

The Minister of Home Affairs exempted travellers transiting through SA from having a transit visa provided travellers must be subject to biometric capturing. In order to ensure this pronouncement is adhered to biometrics in the transit facility will be further increased and only one system will be a normal eMCS system.

Currently IMS ORTIA also have 10 biometric systems that require linking of minors as part of the pilot. As training progresses the system will replace normal biometric system in totality making this a requirement of all travellers.

In order to expedite your transit / connection to flights: (please note this varies from Airline to Airline)
Make sure you, the passenger, are through checked (where possible) or on-line check in to connecting carrier.
Check in facilities close 60 - 80 minutes prior to International departure, 45 minutes prior to Domestic departure.
Boarding gate for International flights close 45 to 60 minutes prior to departure.
Boarding gates Domestic flights close 30 minutes prior to departure.
Alert the onward carrier if possible that the passengers are at held up at Immigration.

Please note that BA/Comair cannot be held responsible for delays at Immigration.

Hi Mags, just got back from Pilanesberg and read your article on your riding days at Leander Riding School with Lionel Archell.

I also had, I think her name was Jenny Durham as an Instructor as well as old Lionel, taking us hacking like rodeo cowboys and girls. I got my first "jods", from Parshottam Tailors in Grey Street, at 12 it was embarrassing having your inside-leg measurement taken! I also rode in those Hunts where originally they used a "drag", that Hunt-master Ben Sargent's Beagles used to chase, it was just like the real thing. I remember too, getting my first, "lid", from Sanders, as they imported an amazing array of English riding habit. Wonderful days and amazing that my daughter Maygan has now grown up to be an Equine Vet.
