FLOTSAM AND JETSAM !
Are you a hoarder like me Do you keep the stubs of concert tickets, and the tiny bottles of apricot jam from aeroplane flights

Rummaging through my cupboards for the staple gun, I had a fit of madness because of all the creative clutter I manage to hide from HeeHoo.

And then it suddenly hit me, what if I died tomorrow and the kids were left to clear the house up after me Imagine their horror when they come across some of the ataxophobic objects in the cupboards!!

I not only have my old dolly Mary, a wee moth-eaten china doll with stiff petticoats and a cracked face, cradled in a cluster of tissue paper marked 'Sanders Ltd!': but I also have Lucy, the doll belonging to She Who Must Run and Snoopy and E T, the soft toys belonging to She Who Must Wear Kevlar!! Lucy's toes were chewed off by a rat at Sijarira once but Jo was so smitten with Lucy that love was totally blind!

There is so much junk in my cupboards that I cringe at the thought of leaving this precious debris for someone else to clear out. And with Spring here what better time to spring clean!!

It did not take long for me to get super discouraged, I mean who on earth could bring themselves to throw away perfectly good old school reports I not only have the children' school reports, but I also have a complete set of my own and my brother Gavin's, dating back to KG 1 at Hillside School !! A happy hour was passed as I browsed tearfully, remembering how angelic were the girls in our family, and how boisterous the boys!! Gavin was so used to getting 'caned' at Milton Junior School that he always wore his swimming costume under his shorts to deflect the blows!!

Poems from Eisteddfods were all there too, hundreds of them, all worth a few tears of pride as well as magnificent artwork right from KG1 up to Sixth Form, one day when the girls are famous I am going to auction them and make a fortune!!

Certificates for gymnastics and high board diving belonging to Josie (she was the athletic one), LAMDA certificates for speech and drama and singing awarded to Robs (she was the arty one). I am sure all Moms have a florilegium of carefully stored kiddies mementoes

Photographs !! Apart from those carefully stored electronically, we have dozens of photo albums, with the photos neatly affixed with this funny little black three cornered triangular thingys, many of the photos curling and faded but still discernible as special memories from many halcyon years gone by. How could one possibly throw away such glorious moments The hairstyles were worth a few moments of mirth, and the padded shoulders but all in all they are more precious to a Mom than anything else.

HeeHoo is possibly an even more of an ardent magpie than I am, except that his collection is of gadgets and 'Toys for Big Boys'!! He is also a book collector and we have a vast library of books, encyclopedias, boxed sets, that all sit forlornly gathering dust while we both read books on our iPads!!

We have files and files of clippings, newspaper cuttings, scientific journals (those belong to HeeHoo who is a microbiologist), mine are just cuttings from days gone by of radio and TV fame. Old radio scripts, old TV scripts, my very first new Bulletin signed by my Producer (now we are going back 40 odd years), why earth do I still keep them I wonder foolishly.

There, glaring at me malevolently, is Granny's rosewood display cabinet, complete with elegant Queen Anne Legs and artfully lit with mirrors, it is jam packed with objets d'art that I love and hate at the same time. At least the silver does not need cleaning, kept in a sterile environment and I am sure there are items that a collector would give his eye teeth for!! Beautiful antiques like an ivory and worked filigrees gold hall marked baton that was presented to my Great Aunt - 'the Conductress Mrs Maggie Edwards Hardy by the Machen Ladies Choir January 24 1908 as a slight token of their appreciation'. A tiny elegant toothpick holder exquisitely engraved, a mother of pearl holder for crochet hooks, and many other beautiful mementoes of a more graceful era.

I know Treasure Pleasures needs these items to sell for the Old People, but somehow I just cant bear to part with them, what will the Girls do, I muse, when the time comes to dispose of Mum's 'odds and sods' I wonder if they will carry the same sentimental weight with these Modern Young Misses

Why am I so mawkish about this miscellany of flotsam and jetsam I itch to have a good clear out, but something primeval is holding me back..

THE TUDORS: SERIES 4 - 1
Thursday 3 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
In the final series of 'The Tudors', Henry VIII marries his fifth wife, the seventeen year old Catherine Howard, a mischievous beauty who ignites the passion of the king but whose past includes a passionate affair and whose needs are not long satisfied by her much older husband. Meanwhile relations with France plunge to a new low, an invasion seems imminent.and the fierce struggle between Catholics and Protestants seems set to tear the court and country apart.

Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]
Supper available from 6.15 p.m., must be ordered in advance.

ROSSINI: IL VIAGGIO A REIMS
Friday 4 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Il Viaggio a Reims [The Journey to Rheims] was originally commissioned as part of the celebrations for the coronation of Charles X as King of France and was a huge success but Rossini then withdrew it, partly perhaps believing it to be a piece d'occasion whose purpose had been served, but also possibly because he doubted whether another cast could ever be
assembled to do justice to his music which culminates in an extraordinary ensemble for no fewer than fourteen solo voices. The work was thought to have been lost until parts of it were unearthed in the late 1970s and further detective work meant that virtually the entire score was able to be reconstructed. In 1984 it was performed for the first time since 1825 in
Pesaro, Rossini's birthplace, since when it has been taken into the repertoire of many major opera houses and been recognised as one of Rossini's supreme achievements.

Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
Dinner available during the interval ($10.00), must be ordered in advance.

THE TUDORS: SERIES 4 - 2
Thursday 10 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Whispered accusations of an affair involving Henry's young bride, Catherine Howard, and the ambitious Thomas Culpepper lead to an investigation that has disastrous consequences, and meanwhile relations with France become ever more troubled as Henry attempts to stave off an invasion.
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]
Supper available from 6.15 p.m., must be ordered in advance.

3) Congratulations

Congratulations to Nicky (nee Taylor) and James Watson on the birth of a second son and brother for Jake.

His name is Patrick Finn and he was born on 19 August 2015. .

4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Ian William Robertson

At the age of 65 Ian William Robertson (born Harare 28 April 1950), Rhodesia's (now Zimbabwe) Springbok rugby icon, so very sadly passed away in Umhlanga, South Africa, on the morning of Tuesday, 25 August, 2015. His adoring wife of 43 years, Sonia (nee Chick; Olympic hockey Gold Medallist at Moscow in 1980) was at his side as Ian succumbed to cancer after a heroic battle that lasted more than three years.

On August 29th it is with great sadness that I must announce that Mario Da Silva is now in the eternal resting place along with his father Felix. May eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon his soul. He was an amazing father, husband, uncle, and friend loved by all who crossed his path. He was patient and kind and ever giving of himself.
Please pray for him and for our family in this time of grieving.

Chelsea Da Silva, Stella Da Silva and Liam Da Silva.

Rob Jenkinson taken in his sleep on 23rd August 2015 whilst in Jo'burg.
A long-standing and special friend who will be sadly missed.
Condolences go to Shelagh, Jason and Brett. From Bob and Pam Dixon.

Let Me Go
Anon

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no tears in a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free

Miss me a little - but not for long
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me - but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It's all part of the Master's plan -
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to your friends that we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good works,
Miss me - but let me go.

Thank you Anthony Lubbe and the cast of this delightful production - At time when Bulawayo residents are experiencing times of stress and gloom, along comes a production of such side splitting comedic proportions
that all troubles and woes are instantly forgotten!
A strong cast, an unbelievably funny comedy and a slick production combine to ensure an evening of enormous
enjoyment. If you haven't yet seen this production - do yourself a favour and don't miss out!

Anthony Lubbe.. more please!

Dear colleagues and partners,

It has already been 3 years since I arrived in this beautiful Alliance francaise of Bulawayo.
Next Monday, 31st August, Dom and I are flying home for a new challenge as I've been offered to manage Alliance francaise de Grenoble, our hometown.

It has been a wonderful personal and professional adventure here and I already know I will miss Bulawayo and its special people very much. I hope to be back for a visit sometime!

M. Philippe Durand, my successor, will arrive around the 2nd week of September. Please welcome him as warmly as you welcomed me and help him to feel at home as quick as possible.
The Board of Alliance remains active of course and will be on top of things to support the transition.

All the best and a bientot!
Marie-Helene

7) Bulawayo News

BULAWAYO HELP NETWORK is appealing on behalf of HOME OF PEACE for financial donations to fix their vehicle.
Home of Peace was started by Ben Strydom as a shelter for destitute people. When he died in 2012, Clive Krienke took over the challenging task of keeping the home going.
It currently houses about 80 people, mostly children orphaned by AIDS.
Foreign funding has been stopped pending audited accounts which are now in process. Due to the desperate situation, Byo Help Network is providing some monthly support to the Home.
However in the short term, the Home's one vehicle is in bad shape and needs around $500 to repair.
We are appealing for donations to this end. Byo Help Network will receive and receipt such donations, ensure accountability and give feedback on progress.
Please contact us on 67085 or byohelp@netconnect.co.zw or visit us at 130A Jason Moyo Street, btwn 13th & 14th Ave, Bulawayo - mornings only.

Dear Member

An expo dealing with organizations caring for physically and mentally disabled persons was held in the City Hall Municipal car park last month. What an eye-opener it was to find out how many such organizations there are in and around Bulawayo and what wonderful work they are doing with very little money. Amongst them was the Sibantubanye Special School for children with intellectual challenges, Jairos Jiri Centre and St Francis Home. The children and young adults are housed, fed and taught skills. If you have any clothing, household goods surplus to your requirements, bedclothes etc, the Bulawayo Publicity Association would be happy to act as a collection point for them. Tel 60867/72969 or Cell 0779974537. We are located in the municipal car park next to the City Hall.

The revitalised Ascot Shopping Centre is to be launched on Saturday 5th September with music and entertainment, a vintage car parade, and lots of fun things for the children to see and do, whilst there will be several new shops for the adults to inspect, as well as a CABS outlet. Check out the adult and childrens' book at the Ascot Library.

'Laugh Your Blues Away' is another hilarious Ray Cooney farce directed by Anthony Lubbe at the Bulawayo Theatre, which started on 27th August with shows on the 3rd to 5th September. Tickets are $7 each. By the way, there is a very attractive small coffee bar at the theatre which serves anything from toasted sandwiches to hot dishes.

The Intwasa Arts Festival, which is the second most important arts festival in Zimbabwe, is always held in September as it marks the beginning of spring - Intwasa being an Isindebele word meaning spring. The festival events will be held at different venues and take place from the 21st to 26th September, with international and regional artistes performing.

Prestige Paints started manufacturing bio-enzyme detergents in 2001 and are currently producing a small range of domestic and industrial cleaners such as an all-purpose liquid, a FOG cleaner which removes food fats and greases on any hard surface; a dishwashing liquid; pit toilet sachets; sanitizers for industrial use and oil gobblers, which converts hazardous chemicals into carbon dioxide and water. For detailed information contact Dystor Enterprises on 61454 or 077 5 765 887 Godfrey Rademeyer.

Granite Park Lodge in 3 Laidlow Close, Burnside has now an added amenity in the form of a small conference/wedding venue under thatch, set in very scenic surroundings. A feature is the pond into which water flows from in-between granite rocks. For more information phone Gail Moore on 285908/0774021907.

Mary's Restaurant opposite Medical Centre in J Tongogara Street, has been repainted and looking very bright and attractive with bowls of flowers on every table and delicious homemade cakes for sale, Tel 76721.

Skywise, a low budget airline has increased its flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town to 8 a day. Flights operate throughout the day, with the first departure from Johannesburg at 6a.m.

South African travel agents rate Johannesburg airport as one of the worst airport hubs in the world because of the amount of luggage that goes missing. Zimbabweans flying to United States of America should be advised that Atlanta and Chicago airports are to be avoided as hubs as the airports are so busy.

Take heart, we are getting tourists coming to Bulawayo and the Matopos by overland trucks, full of visitors from all over the world, not only from Australia but from Europe and the Middle East. Black Rhino, African Wanderer and Silwane Tours are kept busy on daily tours to the Matopos. The Bulawayo Publicity Association is also getting tourists who have come to Bulawayo by train and coach, usually couples from countries such as Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom, France and Germany. One man from New Zealand spent nearly a week in Bulawayo last month and said he loved the place and the friendly atmosphere. Apparently he worked for years in Antartica, made a lot of money and now travels extensively.

The Bulawayo Publicity Association welcomed two new members in August, Zimbabwe Car Hire and 26 on Park, which is diagonally opposite the Natural History Museum. The restaurant was once a spacious family home, is set in a beautiful lawned garden with plenty of space for children in which to play. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. A special attraction is the two-course business lunch very reasonably priced. Tel 263(9)230399/0775901120 for bookings.

Zimbabwe Car Hire, based at 38 Heyman Road, Suburbs, is a small car hire firm with a branch also in Harare. The fleet comprises sedans, SUVS executive, trucks and 4 X 4s. They also offer accounts to corporate companies. For detailed information phone 263(9) 230722/0783 496 253.

Once again, we invite our members to take advantage of our offer to publicise their new products, developments, etc in our monthly newsletters, as well as to make use of our website as a free means of publicity. Our email is bulawayopublicity@gmail.com and website is www.bulawayopublicity.com

24th August 2015: ZTA Tourism Stakeholders Meeting: Mutare.
Current Challenges and Solutions.
Elephants, lions and a culture of secrecy - Why tourism in Zimbabwe is dying
'Tourism and fear cannot co-exist' - Jane High

'WILD LIFE BASED TOURISM' - this is essentially our business. Our customer comes to discover for themselves unique wild places, and to witness for themselves the complex interactions of our wild creatures in their natural environment. The huge advantage we enjoy over our competitors is that our customer can combine his wild life experience with the Spectacular (Vic Falls, Chimanimani, Chilojo Cliffs, the Zambezi River) with the Cultural,(our History - Great Zimbabwe, historical buildings, San Art and artefacts)

SO WHAT WENT WRONG - I believe we lost sight of what is important to our customer. I believe we did not keep up with how his thinking HAS CHANGED IN THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS. We have been too busy surviving......all these problems on the AGENDA today - they are the daily struggles which occupy all of our attention.
AND SO WE WERE SHOCKED by the enormity of the damage done to BRAND ZIMBABWE by the capture of baby elephants for zoos and the intense world wide reaction to CECIL'S death.

TODAY OUR CUSTOMER IS WELL INFORMED AND HAS MANY CHOICES - Zimbabwe was once so far ahead of the competition, our neighbours, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa. No more. What we missed here is that the customer of 2015 cares a great deal about the welfare of people and the welfare of the animals he comes to see. He will not choose to go to a place where people and animals are abused or exploited. He is sensitive to any culture of fear and the lack of trust that hangs like smoke wherever there is fear.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM - My quest to find out more about these baby elephants caused me to meet and talk to dozens of Zimbabweans in Tourism, Parks, Ministries, Scientists, Hunters, Vets and of course the Animal Welfare organisations. The most striking discovery for me was the prevalence of fear and the personal fears expressed by almost everybody I spoke with. These elephants are a dangerous subject.

FEAR BREEDS MISTRUST therefore SECRECY. SECRECY BREEDS LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND CORRUPTION AND IT KILLS TOURISM. Our baby elephants, the death of Cecil, the destruction of 75% of the elephant population in Chizarira... The clandestine explosion in legal and illegal sales of our wild creatures, from tortoises to elephants. Without us even realising it every living thing has now got a price on its head....and non-consumptive tourism....OUR TOURISM, IS BEING THROWN INTO AN ABYSS

SOLUTIONS - Starting with an honest (fear free) dialogue: Aimed at developing a rigorous system of oversight. We need to recognise that the issue of WELFARE must be addressed. A credible, independent Wild Life Welfare Unit is needed as a priority. Transparency and Accountability should not be feared but embraced. Tourists need to be able to trust us. They need to believe us. Why on earth would they when we ourselves are too scared to talk openly, with honesty about a subject such as the plight of some baby elephants
Look at the top three countries - where the tourism industry benefits entire communities, countrywide right to the grass roots level..... the common stand out feature is the ABSENCE OF FEAR........ (France, United States, Spain...)

THE ELEPHANT IN OUR ROOM : IS OUR CULTURE OF FEAR

A new approach to Wild life/human interfaces - fresh ideas turning wild life/people conflict into wild life/people opportunities
CAMPFIRE grows from an infant to an adult - by actively seeking innovative solutions, a holistic approach based on a respect for the Welfare of people and of animals.

IDEAS FOR THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE AN ELEPHANT AROUND.
DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that some of the most expensive paper in the world is made from elephant dung

Did you know that HONEY produced by 'BEE FENCING' for elephants sells for four times the price of other honeys of equal quality
Have you heard of BIOBOUNDARIES

Did you know that chillies are being successfully used to deter elephants and provide added income

Did you know that one 'non consumptive tourist' provides 17 jobs. And that his money is 75% more likely to filter to grass roots communities and small businesses than that of a HUNTING CLIENT
Did you know that the Self Drive Tourist has the widest impact Being independent means he comes in contact with the biggest variety of businesses and of people - from the petrol stations to the locals he may stop and ask directions from. His 'spend' is distributed over the greatest area and is not limited to just to one 'outfitter'

Have you heard of MFUWE LODGE in ZAMBIA designed so that Wild elephants may regularly walk THROUGH THE RECEPTION across the lounge and into the quad where they feed on the fruits of wild mango trees, ignoring the people who sit quietly in the lobby just metres away By accommodating the needs of the elephants and changing the guests behaviour this LODGE has become world famous and is fully booked years in advance throughout the period those trees are fruiting.

SEEKING ACCOMMODATION
We are planning a visit to Bulawayo at the end of September or October, 2015 for one month and would welcome information you may have of anyone who requires a house sitter, or has accommodation to rent at a reasonable cost and who may be willing to lend or rent a car. The school term is 8th September to 3rd December so any time during these dates although October would be preferred. It is our intention to spend most of our time with the pupils at King George Vl School although we have other projects too.

We are coming in support of our charity A to Z Trust (www.atoztrust.org) and as usual we will be paying all of our own expenses so economy is the watchword.

Any help or advice you are able to give would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes - Elsie & Ian OLIVER
