Those whacky days before 'Smart Phones'

Watching a group of youngsters on their iPhones recently, sitting together, but all miles away from each other in reality, I began to reminisce, like a real old Doris, on how we used to spend our time as youngsters....without any smart phones!!

In the playground at school we would sit around in groups cross-legged and play hand-clapping games. Games like memory games - nominating a subject, where players would have to, while clapping in time, alphabetically provide an answer, if they messed up; they were out of the game.

Still in that same circle 'Chinese Whispers' was played much to the fun of one and all.

Then we would break up into pairs and play fabulous hand-clapping games all the while chanting and clapping in a set sequence.
Remember these oldies
'My mother said, we never should
Play with the gypsies in the wood'

Remember, 'A sailor went to sea, sea, sea. To see what he could see, see, see. But all that he could see, see, see. Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.'

Much giggling and hilarity would ensue as one really needed one's wits about one!!
Remember
I went to a Chinese restaurant, To buy a loaf of bread, bread, bread, I went up to the counter, And this is what he said, said, said.

Cat's cradle was another enthralling game and all one needed was a length of string and some nimble hands!! Cat's Cradle is a game played by two or more people and consisting of a variety of string figures. Cultures all over the world play variations of it
And all you would need to do would be to cut a length of string - about a metro and a half is standard. You would tie the ends of the string together and clip off the ends. It was a fabulous game for two friends and would absorb the entire afternoon! making 'hammocks, the manger, candles and diamonds'!!

For the more energetic there was the group game called 'red rover cross over' where many a knee was skinned in the process, and of course 'The Whip' where a group of girls would link arms and snake their way across the field causing a 'whipping' or wave-like effect.

Then of course there were skipping games- French Skipping - using a long rope held by two pals and the third would jump to a rhyme. Sometimes two players would jump - called 'Double Dutch' and songs would be sung like -
"Two little dickie birds sittin' on the wall" the two players jump in
"One named Peter, one named Paul" each player waves at their name
"Fly away, Peter, fly away, Paul" the player exits the rope as name is called
"Don't you come back 'till your birthday's called"
"January, February...December" the player returns when their month is called
"Now fly away, fly away, fly away all" players both exit the rope.

Now quite one of my favorite games was called 'sevens' played with a tennis ball against a wall. There was a set pattern of obligatory balls throws, each done seven times, and if you failed at one of them you handed the ball to the next person.

Of course 'hopscotch' was always a crowd favorite and chalk was purloined from the blackboard, to draw the regulatory squares and numbers on the school pavement or road.
Hopscotch is a children's game that can be played with several players or alone. It's popular playground game in which players toss a small object into numbered spaces of a pattern of rectangles outlined on the ground and then hop or jump through the spaces to retrieve the object.

Back to the more sedentary games and French Knitting was a favorite. Using an old-fashioned wooden cotton reel into which your dad had nailed four equidistant nails. Threads would then be woven around the nails and pulled through the central core of the cotton reel, and we would produce a rope-like length of cotton wool.

Making Friendship Bracelets were a great favorite using thin strips of brightly coloured plastic and fashioning bracelets for one's 'best friend'.

Hours would be spent making pompoms with wool and two pieces of round cardboard cutouts with a central hole.

Do you remember 'hick, lack, hock' or paper scissors and stone I wonder if our modern children would be as engrossed in this simple game as we used to be

One of my very favorite occupations was the good old fashioned 'hula hoop'! I wonder if it was good for the waistline or if it perhaps put the spine out of alignment

Many of us recall very clearly, however, playing 'Jacks' on the school veranda during break and noughts and crosses in the sand, or on a piece of paper. Hangman too was one of our favorite games using pen and pencil.

Another game we all played as kids was called 'Kick can Lurky' for which you only needed a used tin can and lots of energy!

Our school holidays were inevitably spent at the Borrow Street swimming pool where we would play endless games of Marco Polo!

Finally that all enthralling game of Marbles. We would absolutely cherish our 'marbs' collection and lust over those much coveted shiny goens!!

Ah... but those were the days before smart phones!!!

Joining Hands Against Extinction - every step counts

Dambari Wildlife Trust held its third World Rhino Day Golf Competition at Bulawayo Golf Club on Saturday 20 September. Fifty eight golfers, the biggest field we have had in the 3 years of the competition, collected their sponsored goodie bags and caps, then headed onto the course. Several hours later they trickled into the clubhouse having survived one of the windiest days that Bulawayo has had in a while and handed in their scores. First prize and the Dambari Wildlife Trust ironwood black rhino floating trophy were won by A. Jensen and T. Brut from Bulawayo Country Club.

Prizes for the competition, goodie bags, caps and raffle were generously donated (in alphabetical order) by Acacia Insurance, African Wanderer Safaris , Arenel , Bean There Cafe, Canvas and Tarpaulin Products, Collett's Wildlife Artistry, Deja Vu Restaurant, GC Tyres, Green's Security, Kango Products, Lobels, Matabeleland Meats, Matobo Hills Lodge, National Foods, Natural Wood Products, Nigel Fawcett, Picasso's Framing and Mirrors, Safari Leather, SAVE African Rhino Foundation, The Cattleman, The Farmhouse and Timberland. Special thanks to the Bulawayo Golf Club, managment and staff for all the background work to make the day a success.

The auction of several framed quality golfing memorabilia items signed by international golfing stars, along with items signed by the late Nelson Mandela was very successful with buyers accumulating some very attractive investment pieces. All of these items were beautifully framed by Picasso Art and Framing. The relaxing experiences in the Matobo Hills up for auction provided by The Farmhouse, and African Wanderer Safaris were very popular too. Our very sincere thanks go to all the awesome supporters, donors and golfers who made the World Rhino Day competition a great success.

Please remember that Zimbabwe's rhino play a very important role in the country's economy and contribute significantly to the stability of the southern African region's rhino metapopulation. Help us keep them safe.

PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO AND THE ACADEMY

HAMLET
Thursday 2 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
'Hamlet' is perhaps the most famous of Shakespeare's plays and is certainly
the most filmed of them all. This is the 1990 version directed by Franco
Zeffirelli with Mel Gibson as Hamlet. The cast also features Glenn Close,
Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Scofield, Alan Bates and Ian Holm.
'Not only does Mel Gibson do a fantastic job of balancing the pathos and the
bile, but he handles the language incredibly well . It doesn't hurt that he
has a flawless supporting cast. Helena Bonham Carter may have been, looking
back, just a bit too much of a withering flower, but I liked the choice.
What can be said about Glenn Close except that she's a walking masterpiece
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]
Supper available from 6.15 p.m. - Assorted Quiches, coleslaw and rolls
($6.00)

GLUCK: IPHIGENIE EN TAURIDE
Friday 3 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Diana has banished Iphigenia to Tauris where, as her high priestess, she is
instructed to sacrifice every stranger who arrives in the country to the
goddess. Then a stranger who is washed up on the beach after a storm is
revealed to be her brother Orestes...
'Mireille Delunsch sings magnificently as a red-eyed, hysterical
Iphigenia...
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) : Pork schnitzels, sauteed
potatoes and vegetables. Malva pudding and custard.

THE GODFATHER PART III
Thursday 9 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Director Francis Ford Coppola referred to 'The Godfather Part III' as an
epilogue. Two decades have passed, and an aging Michael Corleone (Al
Pacino), now divorced from his wife Kay (Diane Keaton), has nearly succeeded
in keeping his promise that his family would one day be 'completely
legitimate', but he is kept back by the ambitions of the young. While he
attempts to link the Corleone's finances with the Vatican, Michael must deal
with the machinations of a grasping and ruthless gangster seeking to upset
the existing Mafioso order as well as a young protege's love affair with his
daughter. The film also weaves into its plot two real-life events: the death
of Pope John Paul I and the Papal
banking scandal of 1981-1982.
'An excellent and truly magnificent film. Al Pacino is brilliant and deeply
moving in his signature role, a performance different from the past films,
his character is more vulnerable and regretful and truly wanting
redemption...
Admission:$3.00 [free to Film members]
Supper available from 6.15 p.m. ($7.00) : Cottage pie and cabbage

MEYERBEER: DINORAH
Friday 10 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
After a parade of vast, imposing dramas, Meyerbeer was clearly looking for a
change of pace, and 'Dinorah ou Le Pardon de Ploermel' is a relatively
modest work that features a simple plot in a pastoral setting complete with
an enchanted glen, hunting horns and the 'Pardon', an annual religious
procession which takes place in Breton villages; a plot about lost treasure
is also added to the mix. It was clearly intended to be a showpiece for
coloratura sopranos as Dinorah's music is filled with complex passage-work,
trills and all manner of vocal fireworks and includes the celebrated 'Shadow
Song'.
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
Dinner available during the interval ($10.00) : Chinese chicken meatballs in
sauce with spring vegetables rice or noodles. Chocolate Eclair.

HARRY FINCHAM
Dear friends
Our dear Harry died peacefully this afternoon at 4.45 pm (local time). Berry, Rod, Biddy and I were with him when his breathing slowed, then stopped.
He had gentle loving care during the day from the palliative nurse, his GP and the caregiver. Our parish priest, Father Francis Onwunali, has just left, after some beautiful prayers and sprinkling of holy water. His grandchildren have called in after work.
The funeral mass will be on Tuesday 30 September at 11.00 am at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, 1 Kenmore Road, Kenmore, Brisbane 4069.
He gave so much love. We will miss him.
Lynda

Eric Bloch

I felt that I must add a personal tribute to a man who was such a stalwart, amongst other things, in the development of Girls College from it's early days. He served on the board for many years and took over chairmanship of the Ulwazi Institute shortly after it was formed and developed it into an organisation that had a positive influence on all who passed through the school. His council and advice to both the board and Ulwazi were always of the highest order. He deserves the most sincere appreciation from all associated with the school for his contribution to it's development into the highly respected educational establishment that it is today.

Audrey and I often reflect on the many happy years we spent in Africa (over 50!) and wish things had enabled us to spend the rest of our days there. As it is we are now, after several moves since coming back to UK, now very happily settled in Lymington on the south coast, opposite the Needles (IOW). Lovely spot with sea, river and the New Forest on our doorstep, and a very friendly community and neighbours. We won't be moving again!!
We wish all you dedicated Zimbos, some of whom may remember us, a happy and settled future.

Best Regards,

Audrey and Derek Fomison.

I think it is wonderful that the initiative is being taken to improve the conduct of our police officers on the roads, when it comes to visitors to our beautiful country. Im pretty sure that we have all heard stories about or actually witnessed, from tourists that we have met at some stage, some of the harassment that they have encountered from the cops. However, it raises a concern that, im sure other local motorists will agree with, will this training in friendliness, etc also be used on us, the Zimbabwean traveller I had course, just yesterday, to travel out of town to a nearby mine, with two work colleagues and was stopped at a permanent road block along this particular road. The Lady Traffic Officer took her sweet merry time sauntering up to my window and clearly took pleasure in pushing her extremely prominent midriff through my window before the first thing that came out of her mouth was We are arresting you for having an incorrect third number plate. When I blocked her and informed her very politely that she was harassing me, she very quickly backed down and then promptly tried to illicit a payment that was double the prescribed rate for this particular penalty. After an exchange of words, she eventually conceded and fined me the correct amount. While I question the fact that I was in the wrong, according to Statutory Instruments implying that my third number plate is incorrect, I also have to question the need to, firstly, threaten the Zimbabwean motoring public unnecessarily then, secondly, try to extort additional funds unnecessarily

I would welcome the training in conjunction with the Hospitality Ministry, but, PLEASE, dear Mr Ziyambe, let the results of this training carry over to those of us who are not foreign tourists but just regular Zimbabweans trying to earn a living by travelling our roads and trying to service our customers who are also experiencing similar harassment and extortion. Don't forget, Sir, that when we travel to different places, those places also benefit from our presence, whether by the service or goods we provide or the money that we spend there, as it would be if I was a foreign tourist. If I travel from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, am I not also a tourist of sorts If I travel from Bulawayo to the Lowveld on business, does that not make me a traveller entitled to similar courtesy and care from our police force After all, The Police are public servants!

Graeme H. - A concerned and frustrated LOCAL traveller!

7) Bulawayo News

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Patrick Kessack and I have some early memories of Robin Doust whose obituary I have only just come across in your Letters from Zimbabwe. I reside in Hampshire in the U.K.

Robin's love of steam trains was a constant source of conversation between us and I fondly recall my Aunty Ethel bemoaning the fact in later years that Robin spent every spare moment of his time working on the Bluebell Line restoration project in East Sussex. That meant little to me at the time but when the line re-opened in the 1960s my mother and father were delighted to see Robin on the television news. I was aware of his move to what was then known as Rhodesia and that he worked as a librarian there. I do recall my parents saying that he called on them at their home in Middlesex on the odd occasion when he returned to the UK.

I did not come across Robin in later life except possibly about 10 years ago. I say possibly because I could not be sure what Robin would have looked like in his late 60s. I was sitting with my wife on a seat at Ropley station on the Watercress Line in Hampshire one Sunday afternoon and spotted what I think might have been Robin on the opposite platform. I mentioned the fact to my wife and then attempted to cross the line via the bridge to see if it might be him. Regrettably the train pulled in just as I made my way to the opposite platform and the gentleman that I thought might be him boarded the train. I was thus unable to introduce myself.

I could of course be completely mistaken but the man's appearance reminded me of Robin. I wonder if you might know of anyone who would have a photograph of Robin in his later years Or possibly of where or how I might access one It would surely bring back fond memories for me (and my younger brother) and put my mind at rest about whether or not the man I saw 10 years ago at Ropley station was or was not Robin Doust.

Robin was adopted by my Aunt Ethel and her husband and so my brother and I may be the only surviving "relatives" of sorts. I believe Robin may have been an orphan from infancy. Any help you may be able to offer with regard to a photo would be very much appreciated. And many thanks for writing his obituary in your newsletter.

Yours sincerely
