Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favourite 'fast food' when you were growing up?' 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.' 'C'mon, seriously.. Where did you eat?' 'It was a place called 'home,'' I explained. ! 'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.' When we had finished supper, we had to ask for permission to leave the table! I our youth some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card or even a passport! My parents never drove me to school... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow).. We didn't have a television until I was married with children. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and epilogue; it came back on the air at about 6 am. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people... Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was. All newspapers were delivered by local school boys. -- My brother delivered a newspaper, seven days a week. He had to get up at 6 every morning. Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or almost anything offensive. We found an old coke bottle in the attic once. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. Had someone tried to make it a salt shaker or something. No it was the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Remember when headlight dip-switches on the floor of the car and Ignition switches on the dashboard. Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards to stop your trousers getting tangled in the spokes and pedals and chain! Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner. Using hand signals for cars without turn indicators and those old Morry flip ups that popped up when you were turning left or right.... Do you remember? 1. Sweet cigarettes 2. Coffee shops with juke boxes 3. Home milk delivery in glass bottles 4. Party lines on the telephone that had to be craked for attention. 5. Newsreels before the movie 6. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (There were only 2 channels . 7. Peashooters 8. 33 rpm records 9. 45 RPM records 10. Hi-fi's 11. Metal ice trays with levers 12. Blue flashbulb 13. Cork popguns 14. Few diseases frightened parents more in the early part of the 20th century than polio did. Polio struck in the warm summer months, sweeping through towns in epidemics every few years. Many people suffered temporary or permanent paralysis and even death. Many polio survivors were disabled for life. They were a visible, painful reminder to society of the enormous toll this disease took on young lives. Because of widespread vaccination, polio was eliminated from the Western Hemisphere in 1994. Today, it continues to circulate in a handful of countries, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. New cases reported from Somalia and Kenya have alerted Rotary to the importance of maintaining a vigilant watch and ensuring everyone is aware of the importance of combating this dreadful disease until its termination on planet Earth. The cost of inoculation to save one life is only 60c. The 4 Rotary Clubs of Bulawayo invite any interested person to join with them on an awareness march on November 9th. This authenticity emerges naturally and spontaneously through the Power of Present Awareness - 'here i am' As the mind is the 'operating system' of your awareness, it is of particular significance to see and learn how natural intelligence illumines the mind, the intellect and, therefore, your thinking, speaking and doing. When we gain true perspective we stand firmly in the realm of the unimaginable, inspired to create the impossible. We stand rooted in purpose and depth of meaning, which gives rise to an ecstatic urgency to contribute to life and the living, personally and professionally. Seeing thePoint of it all, the unimaginable becomes possible - it's tangible! thePoint is designed as a learning experience in which you will: Awaken a new way of Seeing for a new way of Being, Be introduced to a daily life-tool, the 'Wheel of Emergence', which is: A Consciousness-based life-skill, Made up of the 6 Fundamentals & Imperatives of conscious emergence, A practical way to engage the action of authentic self-expression, and A guideline to expressing true integrity (naturally available in all of us). Learn to hold authentic power in a way that empowers those around you. When you acknowledge your unconscious habitual mechanical patterns, you allow others to relate and identify with you. Together you co-create acceptance and trust by being able to fully listen, understand and feel. Become more skilled socially and exhibit higher emotional self-awareness, thus gaining the capacity to manage emotions more productively and direct them towards positive co-creative outcomes. Verify and ignite your natural intelligence and strengthen your capacity to stand up, speak up and show up with dignity, respect and confidence in your thought, word and deed. Be supported to participate in Emergence Explorers after completion of thePoint. This will assist your day-to-day practice of this new perspective; striking the essential balance between learning and integration. This perspective is current, profoundly liberating and deeply encouraging - personally and professionally. 'thePoint is a perspective on life as seen in and through the mind of natural intelligence' It is a breath of the fresh air, a breeze of simplicity in a time of increasing complexity. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Supper available during the interval BERLIOZ: THE TROJANS - THE FALL OF TROY Thursday 14 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m. 'Les Troyens' ('The Trojans') was for Berlioz the work of decades and the passion of a lifetime, the culmination of his literary love affair with Virgil's Aeneid and its two tragic heroines, Cassandra and Dido. He knew that the opera was his greatest work but, unable to get it staged in its entirety, finally permitted performances of the last three acts as an independent opera, 'The Trojans at Carthage', which had its premiere 150 years ago on 4 November 1863. Tall, majestic, intelligent creatures With a grey hide and sorrowful eyes A powerful, swaying trunk Bodyguards of ivory, a metre long. But they are endangered, Needlessly slaughtered by poachers, All for a pair of tusks. Countless sacrifices, all for nothing. They are like family, Closely related Caring and protective, Can we afford to lose this? They are the translators of the forest, Helpers to other creatures, Protectors and artists, Twisting trees into fantastic shapes. Bringers of change, Transform the forest forever. They've proved their worth. They are worth saving. By Prianna Patel, Gr 7 Whitestone School +++++++ Save the African Elephant This giant beast roams our lands, Using a trunk instead of hands. To feed and nourish this endangered species, His enormous ears, they flap all day, Keeping his cool from the sun's harsh ray. Mud he loves to wallow in, A natural sunblock for wrinkly skin. The sound of strength fills the air, As he trumpets everywhere. Slurping water with his nose, Litre by litre, up it goes. His gleaming tusks are pearly white, Shimmering in the African light, Hunted and butchered for this jewel, Poachers are extremely cruel. This giant beast will meet its end, If we do not help defend. Nearly every event organized is to raise funds for some charitable institution or another. Apart from various schools, women's groups, service clubs etc, numerous firms quietly give donations in cash and kind and every centre has its volunteer helpers. The Bulawayo Publicity Association has been one of the recipients of donations in cash and kind for which it is 'extremely' grateful. An example of this was the complimentary accommodation given to the Bulawayo Publicity Association by the Crown Plaza Hotel and Meikles Hotel when they participated in the recent Sanganai/Hlanganani Travel Show in Harare. The staff renewed contacts with the other Publicity Association and exchanged information and made useful contacts with other exhibitors. It was pleasing to note that the various travel/tourism publications either carried articles on Bulawayo and the Matopos or listed the accommodation and restaurants (information which had previously been given by the Bulawayo Publicity Association) Meikles Hotel, which opened in 1915 has just undertaken the biggest upgrading programme in the hotel in 20 years. Apart from the refurbishment of the north wing to state-of-the-art international five star standard, there have been a number of other upgrades and improvements in various areas. Old Miltonians Club will be holding an international cuisine day on Saturday 9th November starting at 11 a.m. There will be music by Rudi and Tookie. Mothers don't forget that movies are being shown every Friday afternoon during term time. starting at 2p.m. at the Natural History Museum . The entrance charge is minimal. There is a mini restaurant in the basement to save you going home from school. Petra High School will be holding an international Food Fare and Family Christmas on Saturday 30th November from 4p.m. to 8.30p.m. The Dutch Reformed ladies will be selling their baked goods and puddings there. There will be plenty of activities for the children. Here is further 'food news'. A second Chinese restaurant has recently opened but in the Suburbs. The Spice Rack which was formerly in Haddon Avenue Kumalo is now in Fife Street next to Bulawayo City Lodge. Farm Fresh Vegetables in Robert Mugabe Way/13th Avenue, offers a selection of at least 15 different kinds of salads, ideal to add to your cold meats when ZESA goes off. The coffee shop in Fazak's which used to be Jaggers) is said to be amazingly inexpensive for the quality of food it serves. Another coffee shop called Canela has recently opened, opposite Fazak's. They serve Greek specialities at their Sunday lunches. Jacana Lodge at 21a Clark Road, will soon be opening their 'organic' food restaurant which will serve food mostly cooked with Zimbabwe grown ingredients which will be nutritious and delicious. The biggest racing event of the year will be the Toyota Castrol 3 hour endurance race to be held at the racecourse on the Victoria Falls Road on Saturday 30th November. For more information phone 0772609431. The Bulawayo Publicity Association now has in stock Zimbabwe maps and Bulawayo Street Guides and Vigne Bookshop in Fife Street has maps covering Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The City of Bulawayo commemorates its 70 years as a fully fledged city in November. For your information, Bulawayo had electricity before London. It is the first city/town in Zimbabwe to have a 24 hour Call Centre which is situated in the Tower Block and complaints are dealt with promptly. Econet subscribers should use 080847, general subscribers use 0971290 and for land line users the toll free number is 08004700. Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre celebrates its Golden Jubilee this month. The centre, which was named after King Mzilikazi, was established originally by the City Council as a means of empowering women without means and training them as potters. The ultimate aim was to help talented young people in the city by teaching them art knowledge and enhancing their talents. Most of these youngsters were able to be placed with firms which had use for their skills and many of the artists achieved fame beyond these borders. Weld art was first taught in this country at the Centre in 1958 and some of the large figures were bought by celebrities and shipped overseas. Bulawayo has much of which to be proud. It was the birth place and home of many world famous sporting figures and people in the art and entertainment world. So please, let the pride in your city extend to keeping it CLEAN and litter free. As we all aware numerous elephants have been reported poached in the South West Area of the park which boarders onto the Tsholotsho Communal Area, as a result of poisoning water holes and lacing of salt with cyanide. While this initially appeared to be confined to the Southern area of the Park, it was later discovered that the Eastern Border Area, that bordering the Forestry Areas had also been affected with reports of 5 carcasses being found in the Ngamo Forest Area, suspected of having been poisoned. I was contacted about this by Sharon Pincott (Presidential Elephants) who was very concerned that while these initial reports were confined to the Ngamo Area, the area north of Ngamo and the Sikumi Forest Area, could also have possibly been infiltrated, putting the Presidential Herd at risk and she asked if there was any chance WEZ could assist in an aerial survey to assess the situation. I contacted Pat Cox who as we all know has been assisting us for many years with the aerial survey prior to our Annual Game Count, who didn't hesitate as always to offer his plane and services to have a look at the situation. An initial delay owing to a problem on the aircraft delayed us slightly, and the survey after consultation with Parks on what was required started on Thursday last week. The first flight which extended as far South as Lupane covered the whole Ngamo Forestry Area and we found 3 carcasses in addition to the initial 5 that had been reported. The second flight covered the entire Sikumi Forestry Area and apart from an already known poaching incident near Ganda Lodge not involving poison no other carcasses were seen. At the initial briefing with parks we had been asked to, after completing the Forestry Area to also check an area starting from a point referred to as Mabangee which neither Pat or myself had heard of this area situated on the Eastern Boundary of the Park north of Dete, and we were to then fly in a westerly direction as far down as Guvalala and Nehimba. At a point midway between Boss Longone pan and Guvalala and some 2.7kms north off the main tar road to Sinamattella a further 8 carcasses were discovered which all had had the ivory removed. These carcasses were fresh and were being eaten by Vultures, and it was later confirmed there were in fact 11 carcasses. At the time of the sighting it could not be determined if these elephant had been shot or poisoned as there was no water in the area, it was later confirmed that they were poisoned presumably using salt. Returning to Main camp, Parks were shown photo's given the coordinates, and all credit must be given to them for their prompt reaction and within an hour vehicles and men were being deployed to the spot, it was very encouraging to see such activity. The follow up was successful and arrests have been made with ivory having also been recovered, unfortunately we have lost another 11 elephant. What concerned us unlike the other carcasses found all on the boarder and peripheral areas of the Park these carcasses were as near to the centre of the Park as one can get, a very worrying situation. In conclusion it was very encouraging to see how serious Parks and the new Minister of Environment, Saviour Kasukuwere were taking this whole issue. With the Minister insisting that after each flight, he was to be informed of exactly we had done and seen. On returning to Byo we have again been contacted by Parks and asked if a further survey be done of the areas not covered, organising of this is presently taking place and you will be kept informed of any further details. Ryunosuke Satoro. ++++++++ A Land Forsaken As Catholic Zimbabweans based in Durban and Pietermaritzburg we meet every first week of the month for mass. The first week of November 3, 2013 I stood from a distance after mass when people were recreating themselves. My spirit fainted and my tears ran down like a small stream of water. Looking at the brain drain that has affected my beloved country; different professionals came together chatting about the great moments of the good old days of our mother land. Various rhetorical questions came across my mind; are we really seeking identity in a foreign land What has really happened to the bread basket of Africa I looked at the young stars venturing into the academic world I could see a bleak future ahead of them. I could see no chance offered to them to plough back their intellectual knowledge to their own people back home in Zimbabwe.
