By Gina Lee Wilson from her 'Gigga Spot' Blog

We need new names...

Last Sunday night I went to the Man Booker Shortlist evening at the Southbank Centre. It was a very spontaneous, spur of the moment thing. I was on the train home late-ish Friday night (work has been hairy for weeks now) and there was a random mag from the Daily Mail on the seat. I picked it up, flipped through it and suddenly there was a page called "things to do this weekend'...or something along those lines. And the Man Booker evening was listed. Now I love books, but my inclination to attend something on a Sunday night is usually very very very shortlived....BUT my countrywoman - No Violet Bulawayo - had been shortlisted. And there was NO way that I was going to miss the opportunity to go and listen to her read from her book and give her my support..even if I was one of a couple of hundred in an audience..it was all about giving her positive energy.

So I purchased a quick ticket and trundled off on Sunday night (which was MIGHTY chilly!)

And this is what greeted me...

So I sat myself down and waited for the auditorium to fill up...and it did. And because everything in the literary world is very democratic...and linear...they went alphabetically and so our girl, NoViolet, was up first. She read from her book. You could sense the Zimbabean in her reading style. Calm, sincere and so humble. Not loud and proud, just strong and lulling. She read a section about life in Paradise (you need to read the book to understand...). I sat enraptured. This is my country she was referring to me. My lifeblood. My kindred spirit. It was so familiar I felt like she was reading from my head to her page.

It was fantastic to see her up on that stage. In amongst some amazing writers...from all over the world. And only a young 31 years old. Magical. She was asked questions by the moderator (the chap in the middle of this picture) post her reading...and she answered like every Zimbabwean would...with humour and grace and poise and gentleness.

The rest of the readings happened and were all very compelling...but there is no way that I was going to back anyone else than my girl, NoViolet. At the end of all the readings the audience could ask questions of any author...OF COURSE I asked one...you know me! As I started talking I could feel my throat closing and the tears prickling the edges of my eyes...I cannot talk about my beloved Zim without becoming emotional. I started by saying I was a ZImbabwean and I was supporting my countrywoman...and I think my question went along the lines of...'there has been little good news coming out of Zimbabwe in the last decade...but this is wonderful for you and for the country...what has been Zimbabwe's response to the book?'....and the first words out of her mouth....'Thank you my Zimbabwean sister for coming to support me...' and she then shared that Zimbabwe's reaction had been beyond her wildest dreams. That she had launched her book there and that the book signing in Bulawayo was the BIGGEST she has had at any reading in the entire world. Amazeballs. Just inspiringly amazeballs.

I have her book on Kindle already..but there was NO way I was missing out on getting this lovely lady's signature. So I purchased a hard copy and got in the queue. She was signing books for all and sundry.

And this is when the second magic moment of the night happened. I ended up in the queue behind a lovely chatty lady. I estimate she was only a few years older than me. Doing her PhD in Sociology. Born in the UK to parents from Barbados. She asked who I was supporting. I told her. I had only one book to be signed. Most other people in the queue had bought all 6 authors. I asked what her PhD was on...and she offered up the topic. I was floored. It was the very topic that brings me to tears when I talk about Zim. Her PhD...the sense of belonging. She asked me how long I had been living in the UK. I told her. And we got into talking about my affiliation to Zim. I need no second invitation to talk about my amazing country and the generosity of spirit its' people have. Her PhD is based on a group of people from Pakistan. I smiled wryly and said to her - if she ever needed to think about finding a second population group - she should try Zimbo's....pick up a rock anywhere in the world and you will find a Zimbo under it. In the 10 minutes or so we chatted, I had such a stark realisation. Every day I think of my life in Zim. The life I led. I pine for the simplicity of it. But actually - that life in Zim is the very reason I have been able to lead a blessed and happy life. I see it amongst my friends - positivity is hard to come by. But my cup over runneth. I see the world in a very unique and unparalleled way...but this is SOLELY because I grew up in a country and community that nurtured and encouraged that outlook.

Finally I was at the front of the queue...and NoViolet smiled up at me. And my pride soared. This was someone from my little dot on the world map. And I said to her...I am the one who asked you the question in the auditorium. Her pearly white smile grew bigger - and she said 'my sister'. She asked me a few questions about how long I had been in the UK, when was I last in Zim...and they she opened my book and asked my name. I told her and she started scribbling. I could not see what she was writing. She handed my book back and thanked me for coming and I was shepherded out of the way by the people in black hovering. And I opened the front page and this is what she had written to me....

'To sis, Gina. Lovely meeting you in London, my Zimbabwean sis, and I hope Names speaks to you of our homeland. Much love, NoViolet Byo'

I was so touched.

The Baronet and the Matabele King
The Intriguing Story of the Tati Concession
By David Hilton-Barber
The Baronet of the title is Sir John Swinburne, a British aristocrat and Liberal politician. And the the Matabele King was Lobengula, exceedingly well-made, corpulent, with a commanding presence, and when in a good temper, having a kind heart and a full appreciation of humour.
Tati was the scene of the first gold rush in Southern Africa. This forgotten corner of the sub- continent encapsulates a chapter of our history involving five countries, powerful men, much subterfuge, a botched invasion, a rebellion, land annexation, prospectors, hunters, traders and adventurers. It is a story begging to be told. The book describes the characters involved, the missionary Robert Moffatt, the explorers Henry Chapman and artist Thomas Baines; the hunters, Selous , Hartley and others, and the gold miners, Samuel Edwards and Daniel Francis. The founding kingdom of the Amandabele comes into the picture, as does the land of Chief Khama and the Bamangwato. Tati lay in the path of Cecil Rhodes's dream of a continuous tract of British imperialism from Cape to Cairo. Close by is Tuli where the Pioneer Column crossed over the Limpopo en route to Mashonaland. The annexation of Bechuanaland was a direct result of the conflicts between the tribes within the area and the threats from President Kruger and from Germany which had recently colonised Angra Pequena.

RAW brings you Bulawayo's first-ever Adventure Sports Festival! Two days of extreme, safe and exhilarating activities for the whole family.... and we haven't left out the more laid-back folks! Enjoy a feature packed arts, music and entertainment program running at the outdoor amphitheater. For the little guys we've got the KidZone - with mini-zipline, foam pit, inflatables, pony & tractor rides, and much more.

But the meat of the festival is the adventure sports! Try your hand at rock climbing, safely harnessed under instructor supervision, brave the mega-zipline if you dare, traverse the tree-tops on the canopy trail, or try your acrobatic skills on the bunji-tramp! There'll be slack-lines for beginners, a daredevil high-wire demonstration, a horizontal bunji competition, and a multi-point geocache hunt with treasure at the end!

For the fitness enthusiasts, break out the bike for an off-road MTB race, or lace up your trail- runners for a scenic trail run/walk though some parts of the dams we bet you've never seen before! Loads of prizes to be won throughout the weekend.

Wind down at the end of the day with a canoe paddle on the top dam, catch a sunset concert and then settle down at the amphitheater for a fire show, and a screening of some of the most incredible extreme sports documentaries you've ever seen - athletes at the top of their game.
There will be plenty food, drinks and stalls, as well as security, an ambulance and a first-aid station to ensure you have a safe, secure and fun-filled event. Take your festival experience to the next level by bring the whole family camping for the weekend - enjoy the magic of the bush, right here in town!
Which brings us to the reason for the festival - the Hillside Dams Conservancy, well-know and well-loved by the Bulawayo community. Hillside Dams is THIRSTY, and needs an upgrade to the irrigation system to get the lawns and gardens green, ablutions at the top dam so we don't have so far to waddle for a widdle, and beefed up security so we can continue to play in a safe environment. 80% of funds raised will be ploughed straight into these projects, to make the Dams a better place for our community - fundraising by Byo, for Byo!
So come on down folks, it's going to be huge! Make sure you keep this weekend free, and get ready for RAW to Rock/Air/Water your world!
Watch this space as more details will be posted soon !

Dear friend of Bulawayo Help Network and all other caring citizens of Bulawayo.

We are fast approaching Christmas which traditionally is a time of caring. We encourage you to join with BHN as we seek to ensure that as many pensioners as possible enjoy something special at Christmas.

There are a number of pensioners in their private homes whom we help. Mrs Jan Marillier will be responsible for distributing donations to them. There are also the poorer retirement homes namely Ralstein House, Entembeni, Ekuphumuleni and Bartley Block whom we will support with this initiative. Mrs Di Charsley will ensure donations are evenly spread out. The other retirement homes receive outside support at this time of year and have the capacity to give something extra.

You will become aware of bins placed in a number of supermarkets into which you can place items for consumption. There are also 'Hungry Mouths' waiting for your cash donations. If you feel you have the capacity to give more, please make out a cheque to BHN or you can make a bulk donation.
As always BHN will be accountable to the Bulawayo public with donations received and distributed from this initiative.
Thank you for your attention and generosity

GOLDFINGER
Thursday 24 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Bond is back and his next mission takes him to Fort Knox, where Auric Goldfinger and his henchman are planning to raid Fort Knox and obliterate the world economy. To save the world once again, Bond will need to become friends with Goldfinger, dodge killer hats and avoid Goldfinger's personal pilot, the sexy Pussy Galore. She might not have feelings for Bond, but will 007 help her change her mind? Admission: $3.00 [free to Film Members]

VERDI: DON CARLOS
Friday 25 October Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.
'Verdi Month' ends with a 1996 all-star production of the original French version of Verdi's epic five-act opera, Don Carlos. First produced in 1867, it was written for Paris on the grandest scale and suffered cuts even before its first performance. Because of the three-and-a-half-hour running time, most subsequent productions have made further substantial cuts so this version provides a rare opportunity to see what many claim to be Verdi's greatest opera in its entirety. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]. Supper available during the interval

MARTIN KASIK (PIANO)
Tuesday 29 October Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
[Promoted by Celebrity Subscription Concerts Harare - subject to approvals being granted] Martin Kasik ranks among the foremost Czech pianists of the present time and his visit to Zimbabwe is supported by the Czech Embassy to celebrate their National Day - which is 28 October. Naturally his programme includes the music of his native land with the first half featuring four Czech composers, and after the interval comes one of the most thrilling and technically demanding works in the entire repertoire, Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' Admission: $10.00 / $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members and Academy students]

THE BIRDS
Thursday 31 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
First released fifty years ago in 1963, 'The Birds' has been described as 'Hichcock's last unflawed film' and a 'genuinely disturbing thriller classic from the master of suspense'. Melanie Daniels, a wealthy San Francisco socialite, pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town but soon after her arrival the birds in the area begin to act strangely. A seagull attacks her as she is crossing the bay in a small boat, and soon birds of all kinds in increasing numbers begin to attack anyone they find out of doors with increasing viciousness... Admission: $3.00 [free to Film Members]

WAGNER: GÖTTERDaMMERUNG
Friday 1 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at N.B. 5.30 p.m.
The final instalment of 'The Ring' in the outstanding cycle from Bayreuth. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]. Supper available during the Interval

CONGRATULATIONS!

I wish to extend heartfelt congratulations to all concerned at Riverside Stimulation Centre for being awarded the Secretary's Bell from the Ministry of Education Sports Arts and Culture. I was so pleased that mum heard the great news just before she passed away, and it was one of the last things she spoke about, that when we left Bulawayo in April, she new she was leaving her schools in very good hands!

At long last her vision and the hard work and dedication by all the staff at Riverside Stimulation Centre has been recognised!
Thank You!!

At a time like this words can never do adequate justice to personalities such as Mike. I don't ever remember having met Mike in the flesh but have come to know him, and made my opinions of him, through e-mail and skype contacts. I enjoyed these contacts with him and became attached to him with a considerable sense of friendship which had grown between us from his open genuineness, integrity and willingness to assist. I know that I shall miss his presence and my heart goes out to his family and friends for his loss. Mike - where ever you have gone, or go, take these words with you : "Li Hamba Guhle Mgane Wami".

MATOPOS WORLD RHINO DAY CELEBRATIONS! SEPTEMBER 22, 2013

PAUL HUBBARD
Project Manager, Matobo Rhino Initiative Trust

World Rhino Day, September 22, dawned grey, cold and with a smattering of rain. The clouds matched our mood as we worried about what this meant for people being tempted to come out to the Matopos and take part in our activities aimed at raising money to continue our fence building project. After all who would want to get out of bed early in the morning in such bad weather? As it turned out, we needn't have worried. Bulawayo loves the Matopos and people came out by the score to support the Matobo Rhino Initiative Trust and the Rhodes Matopos National Park on the day. By the end of the day, over 350 people had come to Sandy Spruit Dam and shared the day with us, living this years' National Rhino Day motto, 'Rhino Leading the Charge Against Extinction'.

Scores of riders took to their bikes, following an easy but scenic course laid out by Vaughan Elkington and the Lounge Lizards social biking club. Some people rode the course more than once! The majority of people opted for the fun 5km walk, some in awesome costumes that raised a few eyebrows and helped create a relaxed, fun atmosphere enjoyed by all.

Good entertainment was provided by Fence Africa and National Fencing who each agreed to install 300 metres of fence along the road, actually building the fence on the day in front of the visitors. Their excellent work will now be seen by every visitor to the park and hopefully increase awareness of the work being done and the type of fence being built by the MRIT. People from the Badja area, to the south-west of the park came to provide assistance with building this section of the fence on the day and celebrate the existence of rhino in the area. Chief Nathisa, a trustee of the MRIT, sent his representative, Mr Sikosana to address the crowds and discuss the positive impact the construction of the fence has had in the western section of the park. Mr Oscar Nyathi gave an impassioned speech highlighting the positive aura of cooperation between the National Parks Authorities, the Matobo Rhino Initiative Trust and the local communities and other stakeholders.

A highlight was the presence of Twalumba, the rhino made from recycled tin cans who was brought to the site by Swift by kind assistance from Environment Africa. Drums of Peace played at the close of the day for free, launching their 'Rhino Song' a fine piece of music that will hopefully be heard around Zimbabwe.

Alison and Sarah Burton had created three delightful paintings of rhinos in the Matopos which were auctioned and raised enough money to pay for a kilometre of bonnox wire! The team of Andre van Rooyen, Violette Kee-Tui and John Eppel sponsored the printing of several canvasses showing off Andre's amazing photographs of the Matopos landscape. These were auctioned on the day by the ever- exuberant Mike Burns, and raised enough money to help install a kilometre of fence.

By all measures, the event was a real success and has raised enough money to build and install at least another two kilometres of fence in the park.

More importantly the fun day had other benefits:
Increased awareness and promotion of the Rhino situation in the park.
Demonstration to foreign donors and potential donors that the local community are making an effort to help.
Increased the joint community spirit.
Upgraded the Sandy Spruit site due to the repair of the ablution facilities, bush clearing and general clean up of the site.
Fulfilling the request by the Rhodes Matobo Committee to put up a 'shop window' fence at the entrance to raise awareness for the general public.
Recognition of major donors with new signage at the gate.
These are real positives that sometimes get overlooked.

As to facts and figures, we raised $5256 from gate takings as well as $954 from sponsorship. The art auction on the day raised $2450 for 6 pictures making for a total of $8760. Once expenses have been deducted, I think we cleared at least $6000 which is roughly enough for two kilometers of fencing installed in the park. So the day and activities achieved our aims and more thanks to the help and support of so many different people.

The event was held with the full support and appreciation of the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and I would like to publicly thank them for their assistance and guidance during the day.

For more information and pictures about the fun day and the fence project, please visit www.rhodesmatopos.com or like us on Facebook.
'Write To God' - Peace initiative:
The Write to God initiative is a non-commercial, volunteer administered platform aimed at connecting people to God, It was initiated in Kenya 2012, prior to the country's election where the aim was to remove the anxiety and fear enabling the Kenyans to express themselves in calling on God to grant them a peaceful election, which was achieved. The success of the Kenyan experience led to the project spreading to other African nations such as Mozambique, Botswana and now in Zimbabwe. This initiative goes beyond age, race, gender, religion, or any other affiliation and aims to inspire the people of Zimbabwe to write a letter to God by December 2013.
We are encouraging people to reflect and go deep within and express those emotions on paper so that it will benefit you as an individual making you feel lighter, less burdened, connecting with God and to inspire others into either writing their own letters or relating to what has been written. Furthermore, this initiative aims to unify Zimbabweans as one family under God, irrespective of how we address him.
You can write on any paper, however for the duration of the project we have letter templates upon which one can write their letter provided at key collection points (see below for Byo points.) One can also use online channels like email, facebook, whatsapp and sms enabling all to write. People must state Private or Public when writing their letter and we will treat them accordingly. At the end of the project, we will invite leaders of all faiths together to sacrifice the letters collected.
