In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren t good for the environment The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn t have the green thing back in my day "

The clerk responded, "That s our problem today The former generation did not care enough to save our environment "

She was right, that generation didn t have the green thing in its day

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shop The shop sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over They were recycled

But they didn t have the green thing back in that customer s day

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn t have an escalator in every store and office building They walked to the grocery store and didn t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks

But she was right They didn t have the green thing in her day

Back then, they washed the baby s nappies because they didn t have the throw-away kind They dried clothes on a line, not in a 220 volt energy gobbling machine - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing

But that old lady is right; they didn t have the green thing back in her day

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of a cricket pitch In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn t have electric machines to do everything for you When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap They didn t have air conditioning or electric stoves with self cleaning ovens They didn t have battery operated toys, computers, or telephones

Back then, they didn t fire up an engine and burn fuel just to cut the lawn They used a push mower that ran on human power They used hand operated clippers to trim the shrubs They exercised by working so they didn t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity

But she s right; they didn t have the green thing back then

They drank from a glass filled from the tap when they were thirsty instead of using a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull

But they didn t have the green thing back then

Back then, people walked or took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances And they didn t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint

But isn t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn t have the green thing back then?

With thanks to June Hithersay

3) Roses And Raspberries
DSTV

Raspberries to Multichoice Zim for not telling the public at large by any form of media that if your TV picture is experiencing 'freezes' or button malfunctions on the remote, then in all, likelihood that the smart card is a version 2 0 and you need a Version 3 0! They know who has affected decoders and what version smart card!! In SA this service was / is proved free and here in Tatazonke we have to pay US$15 for the new card Plus a phone call to Harare to get it activated
You also lose all the recordings and pre set recordings for future programs too!

The appointment of Clive Stockhill of Save Valley Conservancy to the Zimbabwe Tourism Board with a special responsibility to improve the Beit Bridge Border Post is a step in the right direction In the pat the authorities have shown themselves to be totally clueless on how to deal with a national disgrace

But what about the Bulawayo International Airport? Not only has there been an undue delay in bringing the new terminal on stream, but the present old building is also a national disgrace

What Customs authority at any other international airport requires a search of luggage of every person passing through the Green Route labelled "Nothing to Declare" And is it really necessary to pay the priceless sum of $4 on excess duty and having to wait 20 minutes for the receipting officer to write recipes and search other luggage The printing cost of 3 copies of a "non carbon required" receipt must be $4 alone

In this weather the building is hot and passengers get exasperated over congested luggage retrievals, poor queuing systems and the attitude of Customs Passengers flying in from First World countries roll their eyes in horror Between Air Zimbabwe and Zimra, there is a huge room for improvement The Minister of Tourism should get off his seat in Harare and cause something to happen in Bulawayo If he does not know how to do it, then professional outsiders should be engaged to give proper advice Bulawayo airport is an incredible bad indictment of Zimbabwe and has been in this state for too long

Warm regards Pete, Gwen, Shiny, Portia and Doreen

I AM WRITING TO YOU IN OPEN FORM TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION THE MOST DISGRACEFUL WAY IN WHICH THE ZESA DEPARTMENT HAS GONE ABOUT THE ALMOST CRIMINAL DESTRUCTION OF TREES IN THE MALINDELA SUBURB OF THIS CITY

I APPRECIATE THAT THE EXCESSIVE PROLIFERATION OF THE BRANCHES OF TREES ADJACENT TO VARIOUS POWER LINES CAN CAUSE DISTRIBUTION PROBLEMS AND INTERRUPT THE SUPPLY OF POWER TO THE SUBURBS, AND UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO TRIM CERTAIN TREES AND BUSHES THAT INTERFERE WITH THE THESE TRANSMISSION LINES

BUT THE WILLFUL AND BLATANT HACKING OF THE TREES ALONG LONGFELLOW ROAD, WITH NO REGARD TO THE DESTRUCTION OF THESE TREES IS, AS I HAVE SAID, ALMOST CRIMINAL

THERE IS, I AM SURE, A MUNICIPAL BY LAW THAT PROHIBITS THE DESTRUCTION OF TREES IN THE MUNICIPAL AREA, BUT THIS SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN DISREGARDED IN THE WAY IN WHICH THESE TREES HAVE BEEN MUTILATED

IF YOU FEEL THAT I AM BEEN EXCESSIVE IN MY CONDEMNATION OF THE METHOD OF "CLEARING" THE LINE OF TRANSMISSION, JUST TAKE THE TIME TO DRIVE ALONG LONGFELLOW ROAD TO SEE FOR YOURSELF
I DO NOT DOUBT THAT THERE ARE OTHER AREAS IN THE CITY THAT HAVE ALSO SUFFERED THE SAME DISGUSTING FATE
FOR A CITY RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY TO HAVE TO SUFFER THIS FATE IS UNTHINKABLE
SOMEBODY SHOULD BE MADE TO BEAR THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS UNWANTED MAYHEM

In the quiet of the evening
I sit and think of you,
I open up my memory book,
Of the things we used to do,
And as I turn the pages,
My eyes are filled with tears,
For, although I have my memories,
I can t hold back the years
Our hearts are filled with memories
Which we gather through the years
All the happy times we shared,
Are treasured souvenirs

7) Guardian Angels, Donations and Wish Lists

Greetings Friends of BHN

We hope that you have had a good holiday and we wish you all a Happy and Prosperous 2012

In 2004 BHN was established by its parent charity ZANE and focuses on Retirement Homes in Bulawayo Since dollarization the situation had been somewhat more manageable than the chaotic preceding period However with dollarization the levies increased by 400% with utility charges and wages increasing by up to 700% All homes had to increase their fees considerably when, in August 2011, employees in their sector were awarded a 30% wage increase backdated to January 2011 One home's committee observed that their salaries are greater than costs of electricity and provisions together

The management personnel of the homes face an endless series of crises-many of them now near to breaking point BHN is working with the homes to keep them open It is a very sobering experience to visit these homes and also uplifting due to the spirit of determination and enduring goodwill amongst home staff in dire circumstances When informed about someone requiring our help, we work with the administrators in the homes We do individual means-tests and if necessary we will contact their relatives in order to ensure we are all fully informed about their necessity for help We will then pay the rent directly to the homes The homes were thereby relieved of the responsibility of dealing with people with no family and without the means to pay their rents We also assist the homes with food and emergency hospitalization and the community of Bulawayo has been magnificent in its awareness and support

With the expertise of a local young enthusiast BHN is making a video about the retirement homes in Bulawayo, which we hope will be of interest We would like to invite all friends of BHN to see the video and also to meet and listen to Tom Benyon, who heads up ZANE He will be visiting Bulawayo in April We hope as many of you as possible will join us for an interesting evening The place and date will be advised in our March newsletter

Sadly Maria Egerer who has done so much during the last six months to help raise the awareness of BHN in the local community has decided to move on We thank her for laying the foundation for this phase in the growth of BHN

In this issue you will find:
A summary of our income and expenditure for our Emergency Hospital Fund for 2011
A message from Garden Park and a brief history of Ralstein Home We helped Ralstein to apply to the Beit Trust for funding for solar geysers and it is exciting to hear that the funding has been approved This might create a precedent and help other homes to apply
A story about Peter Rollason What a heroic pensioner he is! He has received a World Award for his efforts with the Sea Cadets If you find it strange that Zimbabwe has sea cadets, ask him about it He will gladly speak all about the issue The extraordinary thing which Peter did for us this year was while on a conference to Japan, he gave a power point presentation on the work of BHN and brought back a donation of $1250 The beginning of our fundraising for 2012

Sincerely
Mike Carter

The History of Salvation Army Ralstein Home for the Aged
Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue
Ralstein House, was built by John Ralstein of Filabusi, an early Rhodesian settler The purpose of the home was to provide shelter, comfort and happiness to the old people The first administrator of the Home was Mr Flengun

In 1970 Ralstein Home was transferred to the Salvation Army under the Leadership of the Territorial Commander Commissioner Sir F Adlium and the Chief Secretary Colonel Hunter The transfer of ownership was completed in 1975 The first Salvation Army officers to run the Home as Administrators were Captain Shaw Cliffton and Hodline
Ralstein Home has continued to provide a dependable and congenial sanctuary for the aged It owes this success to the continued support that is rendered by Bulawayo Help Network, the business and donor community, Church organizations and by you as individuals

Help sustain the Home and your donation in cash and kind will go a long way in preserving this heritage Currently, they now have 28 needy residents, including the aged and people suffering from mental illness or social dysfunction While the home has some meager contribution from some residents we largely rely on Bulawayo Help Network who assist us towards the welfare of 13 residents and the nurse aide
The daily provision of service includes expenses for food, cleaning supplies, utility bills The major challenge is our electricity bill which we owe - $5,600 and not forgetting the salaries for the workers

The centre has the following workers:
1 Laundry men, Gardener,General workers,Cook,Security men
The Assistant Administrator is Lt Colonel E Mhasvi who resides at Ralstein Home The Administrator Major K Hawke resides at Enterprise Home
Donations of food items, money or labour from individuals or companies is greatly appreciated For cash donations to our Bank are as follows

Q DOES THE FINE FOR TALKING ON A CELLPHONE INCLUDE HANDS FREE UNITS? A NO, under the Statutory Instrument 199 of 2000, there is no problem at all with the hand free unit, however, when driving the driver must have BOTH hands on the steering wheel, therefore, HOLDING or USING of a mobile phone whilst driving is an OFFENCE, one which will see the driver being issued a TICKET to appear in COURT

So folks even just holding your mobile phone whilst driving will land you in the soup Keep it far away from you in your handbag or pocket, do not have your phone on the dashboard in front of you or between your legs, leave it on the centre consol between you and the passenger seat or in your handbag
Q WHEN TRAVELING FROM BOTSWANA OR SOUTH AFRICA DRIVERS IS IT AN OFFENCE TO MIX PASSENGERS WITH GOODS? A No, this is not true neither is it an offence, this fine only pertains to Public Transports, i e busses & kombis, and NOT private vehicles
Q CAN THE TRAFFIC POLICE FINE YOU FOR NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT ON THE BACK SEAT OF YOUR VEHICLE? A YES, correct this is an offence if the vehicle is fitted with seat belts for the back , then adults and children sitting on the back seat MUST use them
This is especially important for toddlers and small children who tend to be standing up behind the driver seat, in the event of an accident those young children are usually the first to be either thrown out of the vehicle, or go through the windscreen
Q IS IT AN OFFENCE TO DRIVE WITHOUT A SHIRT ON? A YES, this is an offence and you will be fined for indecent exposure
Q IF ONE IS INVOLVED IN A 'SMALL' ACCIDENT AND NOBODY IS HURT AND BOTH PARTIES EXCHANGE DETAILS ETC AND AGREE AMICABLY TO SORT OUT THE PROBLEM, DOES ONE STILL HAVE TO REPORT IT AS A CAR ACCIDENT? A YES, definitely 98% of the time people leave a 'small' accident scene and 2 days later the drama begins with one party wanting to sue the other party, ALL ACCIDENTS big or small MUST be reported to the Police
Thank you

The Last Resort: A Memoir of Mischief and Mayhem on a Family Farm in Africa
By Douglas Rogers
Thrilling, heartbreaking, and, at times, absurdly funny, The Last Resort is a remarkable true story about one family in a country under siege and a testament to the love, perseverance, and resilience of the human spirit
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Douglas Rogers is the son of white farmers living through that country's long and tense transition from postcolonial rule He escaped the dull future mapped out for him by his parents for one of adventure and excitement in Europe and the United States But when Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe launched his violent program to reclaim white-owned land and Rogers's parents were caught in the cross fire, everything changed Lyn and Ros, the owners of Drifters-a famous game farm and backpacker lodge in the eastern mountains that was one of the most popular budget resorts in the country-found their home and resort under siege, their friends and neighbors expelled, and their lives in danger But instead of leaving, as their son pleads with them to do, they haul out a shotgun and decide to stay
