EVELINE HIGH SCHOOL PAST PUPILS PLEASE UNITE FOR OUR CENTENARY!! I spent a glorious morning last week wandering around my old school Eveline High School in Bulawayo. It was enchanting, every brick, every tree, every pathway, every classroom has been indelibly printed on my mind for centuries (or so it seems !!). There were even some quivering students sitting on that dreaded bench outside the office of the Headmistress !! That massive quadrangle in the very centre of the school, is the same as it was so many years ago when we all lined up as new form ones, to be told which class rooms we were to go to !! That giant gnarled knotted fig tree in the centre of the quad is still there. If my memory serves me correctly, the boarders would line up under that tree to get their cups of juice/milk and sandwiches at break time !! It was in these draughty corridors that we would line up to get our polio vaccines, a teaspoon of bright red syrup served on a sugar cube ..... There was my form one classroom on the northern side of the quad, where Paddy Vickery would read the "Wind in the Willows" to us in that melodious voice of hers. In those days she had red curly hair and freckles and a smile that made one's heart soar with undying devotion. There next door was my form two class : it was during that year that I had my appendix out and when I got back to school I had been elected Form Captain !! In Forms three and four we moved to the southern side of the quad, and for M Level we moved to the room behind the library.... All of these classrooms had high up sash windows to prevent the students from distraction by passers by. The rooms were large, with high beautifully decorated pressed ceilings; the bricks of the classrooms were giant red sandstone at the base and red brick on the outside. A giant blackboard stetted from one side of each classroom to the other, and apart from the teachers desk, the rooms were crammed with double wooden desks. Woe betide any girl who wrote or carved graffiti on her desk !! The Sixth Form block is still there (that's where BOYS were allowed to join us for lessons), although now the sixth form block is the Agricultural Department There was the blackboard where Miss Battiss would make us conjugate our Latin verbs. (amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant...) However we would cannibalize it to "Amo amass, I loved a lass And she was young and tender Amant alas She fell on her a ...... and cracked her head on the fender...... " Apologies to Miss Battiss who of course is still around and will be at the centenary celebrations at the school on 27 July this year. Over there was the domestic science room where we made apple crumble and rock cakes until we were herded off to the sewing room to make those giant turquoise broekies that we made the first and only term thank goodness. How well I remember Miss Cecelia Horn, our history teacher also deputy head, as she would take us down the long avenues of British and European history, with enthralling tales of Gladstone and Disraeli and Prince Otto Von Bismarck who said, and I quote "Laws are like sausages, it's better not to see them being made !!" And who could possibly forget the glorious French Teacher Mrs Bennett, who kept us spellbound with her long perfectly manicured nails, her fabulous chic clothes and her fascinating throaty french accent. Mrs Celia Davies was also a brilliant English teacher and our fabulous maths teachers in my years were Mrs Watson and Mrs Downing. There are the new modern science laboratories, with nice big windows so we could gaze outside while pretending to learn about funny stuff involving bunsen burners, pipettes and test tubes..... We learnt a lot under the firm tutelage of Mrs Joyce Sherlaw who took thousands of young Eveline ladies through their O level Biology examinations. There were the two beautiful old buildings still used as art rooms, where we could splash about behind our art aprons, to our hearts content. I did not visit the pool or the fields as these would have made me sad, there is a general air of neglect about the buildings, but not so amongst the teachers and staff !! Friendly, super efficient, smart and bright, I was invited into that hallowed of all rooms - The Office of the present Head Mistress. Mrs Rosemary Moyo who was sitting at the desk where the revered past HM - Miss Winifred Powell used sit most regally. All six foot of her with that stern grey bun at the back of the head. I could almost visualize her sitting there surrounded by the tomes from which she would prepare her morning assemblies !! How well I remember many of her favourite passages from the scriptures and her favourite poets - Thomas Traherne: "You never enjoy the world aright, till the sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens and crowned with the stars." The Alfred Beit Hall is still there, all the honors boards hopelessly out of date, the gallery now has padded blue plastic cushions and that was probably the one and only difference !! In the old days the hall doubled as the gym, and all of the parallel bars and beams are still there. I could almost picture Miss Dreyer and Miss Wigg urging us to climb the parallel bars, swing on the ropes, and then allowing us to play that most fabulous of all end of term games "Shipwreck" There was the grand piano in the corner of the stage where Mrs Dawes would thump out "I vow to thee my country " and "Jerusalem" every end of term and on high days and holidays. I still have my Little Prayer Book, woe betide anyone who did not bring her "Little Book of Hymns" to assembly every day !! The library was not as I remembered, Mrs Brebner of course was not there, and the books and book shelves looked less colossal and imposing than they did when we were small and Christmas trees were tall. I never visited the hostels, Langdon, Mackintosh and Northward - thats for another time, but why don't you make a date for the Centenary Celebrations? All are invited, old girls, very old girls, young girls too. 'Mahler himself is the doomed little drummer boy longing for redemption... an exciting voyage of discovery' [S ddeutsche Zeitung] Admission: $7.00 / R60.00 the series; $3.00 / R25.00 each evening [free to Red Carpet members only] ++++ Thursday 8 July at 1.10 p.m. in Room 25, Zimbabwe Academy of Music Lunchtime Talk: Intermezzo Peter Rollason will introduce another mixed choice of music under the title "Intermezzo". Thursday 8 July at 7.00 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall "Mahler" and Symphony No.2 "Mahler" is a film in the BBC Great Composers series and will be followed by Leonard Bernstein conducting the "Resurrection Symphony" in a performance with the London Symphony Orchestra filmed in Ely Cathedral. Friday 9 July at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall [with supper interval] "Conducting Mahler" and Symphony No.8 "Conducting Mahler" is a documentary in which five great conductors 1/2 Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti and Simon Rattle - talk about their approach to Mahler's symphonies with extracts from both rehearsals and performances recorded at the Mahler Festival of May 1995. The Eighth Symphony 1/2 the 'Symphony of a Thousand' - is given a stunning performance with vast forces under Klaus Tennstedt in London's Festival Hall. Thursday 15 July at 1.10 p.m. in Room 25, Zimbabwe Academy of Music Lunchtime Talk: Shostakovich and Stalin Michael Bullivant looks at the impact Stalin had on the music of Shostakovich. Thursdays 15, 22 & 29 July at 7.00 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall The Barchester Chronicles The BBC adaptation of the first two of Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire novels, "The Warden" and "Barchester Towers", will be shown in three parts and stars Donald Pleasance, Nigel Hawthorne, Alan Rickman, Susan Hampshire and Geraldine McEwan. "The community of Barchester is shaken from its cosy complacency when a newspaper's crusade against the Church of England's practice of self-enrichment misfires. Overnight the Rev.Septimus Harding becomes a pawn in the battle between his younger daughter's beau, John Bold, and his older daughter's husband, Archdeacon Grantly. Little do they realise that worse is yet to come when a regime change delivers Barchester into the hands of a most unholy trinity: the weak-willed Bishop Proudie, his domineering wife and the insufferable Rev.Obadiah Slope." Admission: $7.00 / R60.00 the series; $3.00 / R25.00 each evening [free to Red Carpet members only] Friday 16 July at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall [with supper interval] Cimarosa: Il Matrimonio Segreto Partly based on the 1766 English comedy "The Clandestine Marriage" by David Garrick and George Colman, "Il Matrimonio Segreto" was a widely popular comic opera in its day. Indeed, it is probably the only opera in history to have been encored in its entirety at its first performance. It was so enjoyed by the Emperor Leopold II that he ordered dinner for the cast to be followed by a repeat performance. Cimarosa is often seen as the link between Mozart and Rossini and one writer has remarked that "the joys are similar to those of Mozart, and some of the ensembles in particular, not least the Act I finale, relate directly to 'Figaro'." The story concerns Geronimo, a wealthy man who is trying to arrange aristocratic marriages for his two daughters, Carolina and Elisetta. However, his plans do not run smoothly since Carolina is already secretly married to Paolino, Geronimo's young secretary, and further complications develop thick and fast. "The greatest compliment for this production, both musically and visually, is that its nearly three hours was too short" [Neue Z rcher Zeitung]. Admission: $3.00 / R25.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers] Thursday 22 July at 1.10 p.m. in Room 25, Zimbabwe Academy of Music Lunchtime Talk Peter Rollason will introduce another mixed choice of music. Friday 30 July at 6.30 p.m. in the Robert Sibson Hall [with supper interval] Beethoven: Fidelio Beethoven's only opera will be shown in a production from the Glyndebourne Festival which received a four-star top recommendation from the Penguin Guide: "It is good to have as consummate an actress as Elisabeth Söderström as Leonore in this vintage Glyndebourne account of Fidelio, recorded in 1979. Bernard Haitink conducts a powerful performance with Kurt Appelgren a superb Rocco, Elizabeth Gale a sweet Marzelline and Anton de Ridder an unstrained Florestan... John Bury's sets for Peter Hall's production vividly capture the atmosphere of the Napoleonic period. A clear first choice on DVD." During March one morning a quiz session took place at the Hillside Dam Conservancy. The turn-out was beyond expectation and made it clear that a great need existed for a form of entertainment like a quiz. The undersigned attended, having previously been asked to set all the questions, most of which were quite comfortably answered. Some senior citizens remarked that where they were staying there was little entertainment of this sort and that it should be done more often. I quite agree and therefore, with some help, am ready to do something about it !! To begin with I am thinking of competitions among the residents of a senior citizens complex itself or if the number is too small combining two or three complexes near each other. The next step would be a tournament amongst all complexes which have already taken part in their own sessions. The idea is to keep costs as low as possible, to use venues which are given free of charge, not to charge any entrance fees and to cover any costs by donations during sessions. This way any senior citizen can attend. We may even find a sponsor. !! The price of petrol prevents me from calling on all the complexes I know and also there seem to be quite a few I don't know. Sites We have closed the Ascot Race Course site and re-opened at Hillside Hardware. Dee is there and you can get all the normal range of services including floral Hand Sprays. Space is tight at Hillside and we have put most of our big stock at the Pembroke Place site. Floral Hand Sprays We have Hand sprays available at both Shops but they are on a first come first served basis. If you want a hand spray for a specific occasion you can always pre-order to ensure that you get the flowers and the colours you want. Our flowers come from Harare and we order on a Tuesday for the week. The flowers arrive on Wednesday and are delivered from Thursday onwards. If you want some thing special speak to us before the Tuesday ordering. What To Do In July Spring is not far off and July is primarily a preparation month. Finish off any special hard works projects in your garden before the growing season starts. Pruning. Pruning stimulates new shoots so do not start too early as the newly emerged shoots may be burnt by a late season frost. The last weeks of July is a good time, unless you are in a very frost prone area. Look at your pruning equipment and make sure the tools are sharp. You need to also source chemicals like Lime Sulphur and Tree sealer. Prune your Roses and Deciduous fruit trees (after they have finished flowering) and then start your new seasons feeding program. (The Hillside Nursery has print outs covering this if you are not sure.) Compost Making. With all the leaves around and lots of plant trimmings being generated it is a good idea to build your compost heap now. We will cover Compost Making in a future News Letter but you can buy an excellent 'Compost Activator' at the Nursery. Seeds Sowing. We are mid- season now and the soil is really too cold to do any plantings. Lawn Mowers. Now is a good time to get your lawn mower serviced and a new set of blades put on. Routine Cleaning Up. Cut back your hydrangeas and fuchsia. Look at all your shrubs and trees, now that they are quite bare, and cut out your dead wood and any diseased material. Watering. Plants need a minimum of water this time of the year and we regularly have people asking why their garden or pot plants are not doing well and in most cases the plants are being over watered. Gardeners often see a plant is not doing well so they increase the daily watering. Pots plants at this time need to watered twice a week. TOP DRESSING We get regular queries about how poor a person's lawn is looking at this time of the year and should they not top-dress their lawn? The following should help you to understand what's involved: - Grass needs to be growing strongly before you top-dress it. Winter is absolutely the worst time to top dress. Lawns go 'Off' in winter. Let them rest and go through their natural cycle of moderate dormancy. They will come back with more vigour in spring. Top dressing is not a substitute for proper feeding of your lawn. In fact top dressing puts considerable stress on your lawn and drains its root reserves. Feed and water your lawn before top dressing so it has the vigor to grow through, do not top dress with more then a 5mm covering and do not water the top dressing until the lawn is 90% grown through. FINALLY We are not open on Sunday at Hillside as it is very quiet at the moment. We will re-open on Sunday once Spring has arrived.
