THE MODERN GIRLS' CORSET

They say that the Denim Jean is the modern Girls' version of the dreaded CORSET !! Now a corset to those uneducated in the art of being fat ..... is an article of torture, (I mean an article of clothing) that is used to compress one's excess adipose tissue into some semblance of order.!!

How well I remember that awful corset my Dear Departed Mum once wore .... I still have the circular tube in which the corset arrived from Her Majesty's Haberdashery in London !!

It was made of firm cardboard, rather like those cylinders in which one keeps ones posters. Measuring about two feet long and about six inches in diameter and it is perfect as a knitting needle container, hence the reason we have kept it for the last fifty years !

There is a lovely picture of a damsel, really quite a curvaceous lady, constricted in this sheath of teflon (well they did't have teflon in those days) cast iron rubber more likely ... but it was an "all in one" job fitting from under the arms to just above the knee !!

How anyone walked in those contraptions is a miracle and how horrendous they must have been on a hot Rhodesian summers' day !!

Perhaps the idea the Playtex Golden Girdle or the "two-way" as Mum used to call it, was to make one melt into a smaller dress size !!

"Full Playtex control with the comfort of cloth lining" reads the tube !! "Keeps its shape and yours wear after wear" it continues.

Well perish the thought .... It was made of pure rubber !!

it was an article of torture that could have been used in the dark ages along with the thumb screw and the rack !!

However Mum was convinced that anything that painful had to be good for you and make you look like the model on the cylindrical tube !!

But getting back to the Denim Jeans which is a lot more civilized for curtailing the flesh .... Mine were called bootleggers which means the are a tiny bit flared around the ankle to balance the bottom underneath. No hipsters for me as hipsters allow a lot of adipose to pop out over the top of the garment.

I had not worn them for a while but as I had just lost 2 kgs and was having a "slim day" I struggled into said denims looking and feeling a lot like Mum used to look and feel I suppose all those years ago !!

It was a bit of a struggle, but not too onerous and eureka, the button actually closed without too much trouble.

Oooh, "look at that" I thought admiringly , standing sideways in my full length mirror, quite a slim silhouette around those usually ample hips !! HeeHoo would undoubtedly have some admiring comment I was quite certain of that....

On with a slinky top and with thoughts of heading off to supper, I knew I would not be able to eat much as there was little room left, but as long as the button did not shoot off under the tremendous strain it was under, I was safe in Mr Levi's amazingly strong cloth !!

Oh, but what was that strange feeling, I could not lower my arms to my side !! There was something there restricting my movement. Did I perhaps have a jersey tucked in to the jeans by mistake. Searching cautiously (just in case) I could find nothing except two great mounds of flesh which had popped up over the top of the waist band and formed a great sausage roll under each arm !!

Rather reminiscent of those Bentley Belts we used put on our children when they were learning to swim, it even made my arms stick out to the side in a most incongruous way....

I knew we were contemplating dining Chinese, and the wearing of my "modern Girls' Corset" would be unwise because the art of holding chopsticks might be hampered considerably by these two giant doughnuts under each arm, and I certainly could not keep my elbows from "flying" as Mum had taught us gently.

She used to put her best Doulton china saucers under our arms to teach us to keep our elbows to our sides during fine dining lessons and would use the back of her hairbrush to tan our hides if we dared to let the fine precious china fall !!

How avoirdupois was this strange aliphatic feeling ?

I was shattered, gutted, Falstaffian ...... Oh well off with that slinky top, these modern fabrics are far too clingy and show every lump and pinguid bump. Several tops later decided that tee shirting and trilobel were all far too tell tale and candid to be used, and settled for a vast loose floral cotton top that artfully concealed all the corpulent parts !!

It was quite a clever little outfit as the volume at the top (or so I thought) made the volume at the bottom look quite slim and trim, something only saponification could really do !!

Mutter mutter ....... how I hated Twiggy in those day, its all her fault, mutter mutter.

Poor Mum how she must have suffered all those lipoidal tears ago.

Oh well, I shall just have to comfort myself with some extra spring rolls and sweet and sour pork with plum sauce.

Written by SheeHoo Must Diet !!

The passionate tale of Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval unfolds ingeniously through a drama-within-a- drama as they meet at the theatre during a performance of "Manon Lescaut". So begin their romantic adventures in Paris, brought to life by Neumeier's intense and refined choreographic language. Chopin's ravishing music highlights this exceptional neo-classical ballet featuring the star dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. 3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
We have read, with interest, recent submissions to the Morning Mirror by a couple of your readers complaining about ZESA and their load shedding schedules. We would like to add a few more comments, as well as to make some suggestions on their way forward :-

Why is it that no load shedding takes place in favoured areas, i.e. Woodlands, whilst others are continually "hit"? For example, we live in Ilanda - virtually across the road from Woodlands - and have lost some 79 hours since the beginning of February, alone.
Despite supposed rescheduling some time back, Ilanda has ALWAYS been load shed on a Saturday night. This not only interrupts cooking of meals, but has an affect on social and family life. How can anyone entertain friends at home or, in fact, even go out for the evening, leaving their home unattended?
Street lights now very seldom work, due to the fact that the timer switches have been thrown out by load shedding.
Crime and blackout injuries are both on the increase. What a gangsters' paradise, with all that darkness to operate in! As for injuries, we have one friend who actually broke her ankle when ZESA load shed her home, causing her to miss a step in the dark.
Have ZESA ever made allowances for the additional expenses incurred by people when being load shed? Here, we refer to candles, batteries for torches, firewood, gas, fuel for generators, etc. People should be able to present those bills to ZESA for a consideration in discounting their ridiculously high charges.
Whenever anyone calls ZESA with queries/complaints, they never get straight or honest answers. Current industries and businesses are being severely undermined. We have witnessed these being closed down, as they simply cannot continue to operate without power. This has an obvious impact on the future growth of our economy.

Although Zimbabwe desperately needs new investors, how on earth would any of them so much as consider investing, or setting up new industries (which would also create new employment) when they cannot depend on continuous power supplies? Again, this has an obvious impact on the future growth of our economy.
The future of Zimbabwe will be in the hands of our children and their education. What prospects are there for them, when they are unable to do their homework after returning from extra curricula activities, as they have no light to work by? Add to that the fact that they often have to go to bed on empty stomachs, and off to school in the mornings without having had a good, solid, hot breakfast.

Do ZESA, perhaps, have shares in businesses manufacturing electrical appliances? So many of these are damaged, due to load shedding, that one certainly gets the impression that this damage is deliberate, in order that people have to replace damaged 'fridges, freezers, etc.
Because of the long hours of load shedding, a lot of foodstuffs have to be disposed of because they have become spoiled in powerless 'fridges and freezes. In a lot of instances, food that has only been semi-cooked when power goes also has to be disposed of. Does ZESA have any plans to reimburse poor folk for these losses?

If ZESA require us all to use electricity sparingly, may we enquire why the classroom lights at Townsend School are left burning 24/7?
Where is the demand for power that requires load shedding from 04:00 on a Sunday morning?
Now for a few suggestions :-
Remove the current board of ZESA. They have done nothing to improve the situation since load shedding started - in fact, the situation has worsened - and replace them with a new and efficient board who would be interested in Zimbabweans and the future of our country. An independent and unbiased audit should be done by, say, Ernst and Young.
A flyer could be produced and stapled to ZESA statements, listing practical ways in which households could save on electricity. This should include an incentive in order to encourage those who carry out these measures - perhaps by means of a special discount when a set number of units have been saved.
We trust that these suggestions may be taken on board, and look forward to seeing some progress being made.

Thank you.

Asked our SAfrican friends why they no longer visit us. "Too expensive - a rip off!" came the reply from 4 of them. Decided to do a check.
National Parks could not help with how to get into Zim, only how much to get into a Parks Board park. "Must phone Immigration". After 2 calls to ZIMRA & another to an insurance company I ended up believing our friends claim that it's cheaper to go to Kruger National Park & see more game for less!!

BORDER FEES
Road access R100
Carbon Tax R140
Gate Pass R100
Bridge Toll R100
Insurance per month R240
Total R680

Parks Board entrance per person US$15
per vehicle US$5

And there is still the fuel to add on. OOPS - forgot the road pot hole toll fee!

Zimbabwe is probably close to the top of the Decadent Nation list (DECADENT - in a state of decay or decline. Oxford dictionary)

ROSES AND RASBERRIES

"CONMAN OPERATING IN BULAWAYO"

Let me tell you a story. It began when the Zim. Dollar was going crazy, and we couldn't survive. So, as with so many people, we planned to leave the country, and to either sell or rent our house out. Well, we were caught up in a web of complete lies and deceit by a very tall, slim, good looking 'gent' .with one eye and false ear - those are his identifying marks, because I can't mention a name.

His English is excellent, and he's full of very garrulous stories. He said his mining company had Canadian principals, who wanted to rent a house out - a large house, pool, borehole, numerous bedrooms, bathrooms, the lot; and to purchase 6 months after that. That's his 'format'.

Well, we had to fight to get any rent out of him, and eventually we had to send him a lawyer's letter for outstanding rentals, which he eventually paid, then once again he was in arrears for three months and my husband eventually managed to evict this fellow. He has left the house in complete shambles, so that we can't rent it out or sell it in it's current state, and rents are still outstanding.

We have also found out that somehow this fellow cancelled our electricity and water cancellations, and of course, we have been left with good-sized bills, because he's not paid up these last few months.

This fellow has not got two cents to his name, he's always supposedly in Gwanda, or North Africa, where his 'company' supposedly have mining interests, but he is a liar and a cad.

I have heard a number of stories the same as this, and would like to warn anyone who deals with this person - DON'T! - and if anyone rents a house out now, make sure written agreements are completely water-tight.

End of story. Horrible, wasn't it?
C.M.

KGVI Swimming pool
Can I appeal to the long suffering Byo community yet again.
KGVI has an old swimming pool that needs filling as we have little kids who might tumble in. We have tried several ways of filling it but cant get the right equipment and/or labour to help. We have the fill material but it needs transporting to the pool. Does anyone have a loader and trailer they would be willing to hire (at a reasonable rate) so we can finally get this job completed.

Thanks,

FERRO-CEMENT WATER TANKS

Request for a copy of a leaflet on the construction of ferro-cement water tanks

Would you please ask your many readers if anyone can assist me with a (digital) copy of small leaflet produced by CONNEX. I had a copy in the mid 1960's, thus it must have been produced late 1950's, early 1960's. An excellent leaflet that clearly showed the construction process of a ferro-cement water tank, the use of a corrugated zinc mould, the wire netting to use and the number of strands of 8 gauge galvanised wire to be applied at each corrugation. It also included mortar mixtures and described the plastering process.

With both urban and rural area water shortages and the incidence of cholera in Zimbabwe, interest has again focused on roof water rainwater harvesting. There has been so much development and experimentation over so many years it seems totally unnecessary and pointless to go through another development process and design of a suitable water tank when it has all been done before.
The construction process made for very sturdy and durable tanks, I know of several still operational after almost 40 years. The leaflet would be useful for the present cadre of development workers

If anyone has a copy would they please contact Stephen Hussey s.w.hussey@dabane.org I would be happy to pay any costs that might be incurred

I was born in Harare Zimbabwe and left there when I was about 5 and came to the UK. Since then I have lost touch with my father,
Richard Hamilton Campbell.
I am now 28 and am desperately trying to find the whereabouts of my father. I was doing some research on the computer and found that someone was searching for my mother on your pages. The advert was from an Ann Van Den Berg, who was searching for my mother Andrea Bert. They mentioned that she was married to a Richard Campbell and they had three children, Chantel, Sean and Cheryl Dawn. I am Chantelle and Sean and Cheryl are my brother and sister so I know this advert was meant for us. Unfortunately, I am not in touch with my mother, but thought this may be a link in helping me find Richard Campbell. The lady left a number 0912 333921 and 0912 981733, I have tried to put 00 27 in front of this, but it keeps coming back as number not recognised.
I wondered if you were able to help me contact this woman. The date of the advert was 13.11.2007. Any help you could give me would be so very much appreciated. To find my father after all this time, well, I have no words that could explain.

I am sorry to bother you and hope to hear from you with any information.

MLC CORPORATE RECRUITMENT

please read this ....

When 2008 and 2009 figure work broke most our spirit, I chose to employ a Chartered Accountant, do a degree in Psychology and pursue a dream in Human Resources. This I thought would allow me to lay my head to bed at night knowing I have helped someone in need. But, it has just made me sad.

With our name now on the map and having hoped for investment in Zimbabwe, I find this new division has an ever-growing number of desperate professionals and good people who are unemployed. Let me help you with your staff requirements for free, expenses exempt, so as to get my applicants into gainful employment. My intention is to offer this service for the following three months, after which a 'placement fee' would be charged. I hope and trust to have your support.
Many of you advertise in the Morning Mirror for staff and I am happy to donate 5% of our expense cost to them. Please contact me for further details.

BATTERIES

The leading cause of battery failure and decay is a phenomenon called sulphation. This is caused by the incomplete reconversion of lead sulphate to sulphuric acid when a battery is charged. The sulphate gradually covers the plates and the battery loses capacity until it no longer works. This happens to all lead acid batteries and is the cause of about 80% of battery failure. The situation is worse where a battery is stationary or is charged incorrectly (inverter / boat / camping batteries).

In the past it was possible to add chemicals to the battery cells to remove the sulphate deposits on the plates, with modern sealed batteries this is cannot be done.
It is however possible to dissolve the sulphate layer electronically with technology developed and verified in USA.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.
Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution.

A YOUNG BOYS LIFE

I am so mad and sickened by the accident that happened last week to that poor little 15year old boy from Masiyephambili College. Please could you write something about it. I cannot imagine how the family must feel having waited for this child to come home and nothing. Or the other children, how traumatised they were witnessing this whole event.

I'm sorry, but the police should be harshly reprimanded for such a criminal act. Why are they high-speed chasing an et driver for picking up passengers at an illegal dropping zone anyway? Surely they have better things to do, like to PROTECT the people of Bulawayo. Of cause I'm not condoning the act of the driver himself, he was completely wrong and should be dealt with accordingly if he hasn't skipped the country by now.

What about the cheek of the owner of the kombi, not even going to see the family. How rude.
That particular corner of Penrith/Felix seems to be a dangerous road. Surely something should be done and maybe speed humps and rumble strips or SOMETHING should be put there. A friend of ours died on that corner as well. And countless other accidents. Its such a dangerous corner. The poor people in that house as well, always witnessing these events.

I have copied the actual report from the chronicle here. I don't know how accurate the account is, you know how they are. I had heard originally that two other kids were involved, one of whom was injured severely in the mid-section, but this article mentions nothing of that sort.

I feel so sick thinking about this poor child and his family. I prefer to remain anonymous, but you may contact me if you would like my details.
Fleeing kombi kills pupils in hit-and-run accident
Chronicle Reporter Saturday 13th February 2010

A 15-year-old pupil from Masiyephambili College in Bulawayo was on Tuesday afternoon knocked down by a commuter omnibus which was fleeing from the police, resulting in his head being severed off. The pupil was identified as Jonathan Tafirenyika. National spokesman for the police Traffic Section Inspector Tigere Chigome said the accident occurred at the intersection of Penrith and Felix roads in Morningside. Insp Chigome said the commuter omnibus was loading passengers at an undesignated pick-up point at the corner of Fort Street and 11th Avenue at about 4pm when the driver saw a police B-car approaching.
'The driver sped off towards Morningside and the police gave chase. At the corner of Penrith and Felix roads in Morningside suburb, some pupils were cycling from school and the kombi hit one of them.
'The kombi driver did not stop and the police car gave chase for some distance before coming back to attend to the accident,' said Insp Chigome.
According to witnesses, which Insp Chigome could not confirm, two police vehicles and a car belonging to a commuter omnibus operator were giving chase.
There have been reports of thugs being hired by commuter omnibus operators to block private motorists from pirating.
The operators last month said they had resorted to protecting their routes from private motorists as a strategy to remain in business. Insp Chigome said the commuter omnibus that knocked down Jonathan was later abandoned in Nketa 7 near the owner's house.
'The driver is now on the run but the owner of the commuter omnibus and the conductor are helping the police to locate him.
'We are also carrying out internal investigations to establish what really happened,' said Insp Chigome.
He said there was no need for motorists to run away after an accident, as the law will eventually catch up with culprits.
Insp Chigome urged commuter omnibus operators to use designated pick-up points at all times as the police are in full force to bring sanity on the country's roads.
Jonathan, who was doing Form Three, was buried at West Park Cemetery yesterday and his relatives said the owner of the commuter omnibus had not sent any word to the family.
'One would have expected him to come and at least talk to us and pass his condolences as we appreciate that it was not him who committed the crime, but his driver.
'The onus still lies on him to at least talk to us as the bereaved family,' said a relative who chose to remain anonymous.
