STAPLES AND STITCHES !

Why is it that the Modern Girl has such an aversion to sewing ?

My dearly loved Mum taught me quite early to "sew a fine seam" - Mum was a great seamstress, everything she made had an "Harrods" look about it, I had quite the best wardrobe in the world when I was a child.

Aunty Poppy Vowles gave me her sewing machine when I turned 18. Uncle George gave her a modern new fangled electric sewing machine but she was unable to fathom the darn thing out, so she would keep her treadle one next to the new fangled one, and quickly switch them when Uncle George went out of the room !!

Hence I became the proud owner of a Singer with all the modern gadgets. (Well as modern as they were way back in the dark ages !!)

Eveline School had obligatory sewing lessons in Form One and the very first garment we made was a pair of broekies !! How well I remember, they used a whole metre of fabric, they were enormous, gargantuan even, and they were turquoise blue which was the Eveline school uniform colour. It was compulsory to wear them, and if I remember correctly, we sometimes had "broekie inspection" to see if we were wearing giant knickers suitable to the status of a young lady !!

Thank goodness Latin was offered as an alternative in Form Two and we could divert our efforts away from the sewing room, but that term's worth of sewing stayed with me and my love for stitch witchery bloomed when I much later became a Mum.

My Babies had just the best nurseries, everything hand sewn by Mum from the curtains to the crib cover, from the tiny vests to the soft baby wraps.

Mum also taught us embroidery and I found comfort in slip stitches, satin stitches, stem stitches and the like. My linen cupboard is still full of beautiful applique table cloths done with love by Mum, that I never dare use !!

My two Girls were the best dressed girls always at the Falcon College Dances as year after year we scoured fabric shops, searched for dress patterns, and after much fitting and fussing, they arrived at the College Bus looking gorgeous.

Sadly these two modern misses certainly did not inherit my love for thimble work and it seems that it is not a popular choice of subjects at schools these days. However I was thrilled to see that Girls' College in Bulawayo now has "Fashion and Fabric" back on the curriculum !!

Mind you these modern misses are innovative if nothing else. I labored for hours to make a cute lace-edged chef's cap for my O level candidate daughter, while My Social Secretary Tracey made her daughter's O Level cookery hat in a flash out of an old bra strap, a white napkin folded into a triangle, and two safety pins......

And it was HeeHoo who introduced the Girls, in my absence, to the natty invention of using a stapler to pin up faulty hems !! I will always remember way back when HeeHoo and I were first wed, most of his seams and hems were held together by staples, even in some most delicate and vulnerable areas !!

Sewing is such an amazing art and the person who has perfected it in Bulawayo is Jen Brebs whose every gift, large or small, is lovingly sewn in exquisite cross stitch.

One's life was the richer in those tapestry days gone by, I still examine the "Family Quilt" with fondness as I can uncover the threads of a whole life time of beautifully sewn outfits.

Every tiny piece in the patchwork brings home wonderful memories of dresses made so lovingly all those happy years ago.

PERFORMING ARTS AND THE ACADEMY

CD LIBRARY
The Academy CD library is open with immediate effect. There are currently around 500 CDs available but we intend to add to the stock on a regular basis. There is a $10.00 registration fee and discs may then be borrowed at $1.00 per two discs. (The registration fee is a standard charge which applies to anyone enrolling at the Academy so, if you're a registered student, then it is already paid!)
The library will initially be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.00 a.m.to 4.00 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9.00 a.m.to 11.00 a.m. We intend to open the whole library to members over the next few weeks - there is a substantial collection of cassettes, a vast library of LPs for those who can still play them, several hundred books on music, a substantial collection of miniature scores and a truly amazing amount of sheet music.

SOUND AND LIGHT
The Academy is offering a new course on theatre, conference and function lighting and also on sound reinforcement, recording and radio/TV applications. The course will be run by Ian Chatterton and Peter Rollason and starts on Friday 29 January. It will last for 12 weeks and the cost, payable in advance, is $100.00 which will cover all hand-outs, etc.. There is no provision for casual entries, it's the whole course or nothing! The sessions will all be held at the Academy and start promptly at 3.30 p.m., finishing at 5.00 p.m. Places are limited, so book now at the Academy office. This is a wonderful opportunity, especially for young people, so do take advantage of it.

COFFEE SHOP
The Coffee Shop is open on weekdays from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and on Saturday mornings to early afternoon. We hope you will give it your support - Michael Bullivant says he has sampled the baguettes, toasted sandwiches, wraps and cheese cake and can thoroughly recommend them all!

LESSONS
The Academy is, of course, first and foremost there to teach music and there are currently vacancies for piano, guitar, flute, clarinet and voice. Please contact the office (60684/67195) for full details if you're interested - we're happy to take students from six upwards and adult students are always welcome! As well as the weekly lesson, fees cover regular theory classes and there is no charge for using library music.

BLEAK HOUSE
Monday 18, Thursday 21 and Monday 25 January at 7.00 p.m. The outstanding BBC production of Bleak House will be shown again (by popular request!) in three parts; the first will finish at around 10.15, Parts 2 & 3 at c.9.45.
"A wonderfully rich piece of television." [The Evening Standard] "A cast that was uniformly impressive... All in all, the prospect of spending further episodes in this company feels not only enticing but entirely thrilling." [Daily Telegraph] "BBC One's Bleak House adaptation is a masterpiece." [The Observer] "... this glorious adaptation transforms soap opera into art." [The Times] Admission: $7.00 / R50.00 for the series, $3.00 / R25.00 individual evenings
RETURN OF THE FIREBIRD
Friday 29 January at 6.30 p.m. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Return of the Firebird includes three ballets, Scheherazade, The Firebird and Petrushka, all first seen in Paris a hundred years ago. "This indispensable DVD offers re-creations of three key Diaghilev productions from the peak of the Ballets Russes with choreography, d cor and costumes as near as possible to the original staging.... very spectacular indeed, the presentation vividly and colourfully handled, but what makes this so enjoyable is the excitement and overt eroticism of the dancing itself." [The Penguin Guide] Admission: $3.00 / R25.00

PROTECTED SPECIES
For the public's information, the Matobo Conservation Society has made an extract from the National Parks and Wildlife Act 14/75 in respect of protected species. We especially bring this to your member's attention as it has been observed that vendors in Bulawayo are offering for sale Orchids, Cycads, Tree ferns, Flame lilies and other protected species. We have also observed the use of club moss and ferns in hanging baskets. These plants have been illegally removed from their natural environment, and this practice threatens our natural heritage. Members of the Public should inform the Police, National Parks or the Matobo Conservation Society if they come across any of these illicit dealers - and you should not buy from them!

Please note that in terms of the law the word 'WILDLIFE' refers to animal and plant species.

PROPERTIES FOR SALE:
AUSTRALIA - Property Prices Set to Soar

Property prices across Australia have jumped almost 6 percent this year and will continue to rise even in the country's most expensive suburbs, experts have said. The average Australian home has gained $28,194 in value since January this year and is now worth almost half a million dollars at $477,865, according to the RP Data-Rismark Home Value Index.

The Market is Heating Up - This is the Time to Invest

We had an excellent response to our last ad in the Morning Mirror, with a number of property investors wanting to invest in property in Australia. We are currently working with these investors from southern Africa on Joint Venture Projects whereby they put a deposit into one of our residential developments & we offer 20% returns on the amount invested. At the end of the development phase, the investor owns the property outright. Since the recession, banks have tightened up on lending making opening up new tracts of residential land difficult for developers. As a result, Wealth Acceleration Group began looking at additional ways to fund our projects. We believe that this Joint Venture Project offers investors an excellent strategy to get into property in Australia. We intend making a trip to South Africa to meet with investors in JHB/DBN/CT to discuss all the details of the JV. Alternatively, investors are welcome to come to Australia, meet with us & look at the projects for themselves.

ZIMGLOBAL
offers low cost, hassle free international dialing using VOIP 'call back' technology from your current LAND LINE telephone number from anywhere in Zimbabwe. We have a number of clients living in Bulawayo currently on our books already and the feedback has been very positive.

An example of our call rates are:

15c per min to UK and USA; 15c per min to Canada 16c per min to Australia and most European countries; 18c per min to China; 18c per min to India; 20c per min to RSA and Zambia; 24c per min to Botswana and Mozambique calls to international land lines; international cell phone rates available on our website*

This equates to an average of 26%-50% less on what you would pay using normal telcoms in Zimbabwe. Calls through us are charged for the first 30 seconds once you receive your call back and in 6 second increments thereafter. Dialing international cell phones with this system is effortless and a lot cheaper than dialing direct. NO new equipment is needed and there are NO join up or monthly fees. We work as a pre-paid service and you will have access to your account online 24 hours a day to view your itemized call log. What you pay for is what you get to spend on 'talk time'. e.g. for only $10 you get approximately 70 minutes talk time to land line phones in the USA and UK; 60 minutes 'talk time' to Australia and most of Europe! In addition, our service helps to by-pass the usually congested lines out of Zimbabwe and the lines are stable and clear. (No more straining of your dialing finger to get an outside line and no more 'dropped' calls!) If it all sounds 'too good to be true' ... Please sign up for a FREE TRIAL on our website: www.ZimGlobal.net or contact Leanne or Paul on 497 572 or 0913 189 811 or e-mail info@zimglobal.net Many thanks and we hope we can be of service to you.

CHURCHES IN FORT VIC BUILT BY ITALIAN POWS

An acquaintance, whose thesis for her doctorate is about churches in East, Central and South Africa built by Italian POWs, asked whether I had any relevant documentation.

Being Kenya born I was aware of the little chapel at the foot of the Rift Valley, just off the old Naivasha/Nairobi Road and have been able to pass on some photos and articles. When we moved south and settled in Howick, I was advised of yet another chapel built by Italian POWs, on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg - the editor of The Witness arranged for archives to forward photos and articles. Recently, Neville Richards, who served with 2/6 KAR in the Sudan during WWII and ranched in the Fort Vic area - now a frail 91 and in the Cape - mentioned the existence of another two churches built by Italian POWs, one in the centre of Fort Vic and a smaller one on the outskirts. If any of your readers have any photos/articles about any of the churches/chapels built in East, Central or South Africa by Italian POWS, please ask them to contact me at rookenjb@mweb.co.za. Unfortunately, we don't have broadband; our landline whose speed of download is betwixt pony express and the cleft stick sizzles at the mere mention of anything over 750KB! Large files of 1MB can be forwarded to to our friendly IT provider - longonot@telkomsa.net - with Subject heading: For Bruce Rooken-Smith.
Sincerely
Bruce Rooken-Smith
