LIVING ON A KNIFE EDGE

One of my New Years resolutions is to iron HeeHoo's clothes more carefully.

Ironing has never been a strong point with the Kriel Girls.

SheHoo Must Run was sent off to Rhodes University with a perfectly good Mazoe Iron, but it never left the box. In fact the plug was taken off to be used on the stereo.

It was only many years later that she told me her contemporaries had fancy steam irons and there was no way on earth she was going to allow anyone a glimpse of her trusty Mazoe Iron. Poor child, I obviously scarred her for life as she has never ironed since.

Her very first purchase with her very first pay cheque was a tumble dryer, so as to avoid ironing I was sure.

Now tumble dryers and I are sworn enemies, EVERYTHING SHRINKS !! But SheeHoo Must Run is so slender that even if her clothes shrink six sizes she can still fit into them so ... no problem.

Little SheHoo Must Sing is also a confirmed Non Ironer - when she was at University in the States, it was either the tumble dryer or the dry cleaner, no in between there, but then dry cleaning is pretty cheap in the States.

Life is so easy there that one does not even leave one's automobile when dropping off the laundry. Out runs a little man, grabs your vestments, which he trusts you have counted, And when they are nice and clean and perfectly pressed you swing by the launderette, out comes a little man with your garments, a credit card is swiped on a cunning little machine and off you go.

Or if you are a busy exec, the dry cleaning can be delivered to your doorstep. It is a common sight to see a giant bundle of washables, neatly laundered and pressed, each on its own individual hanger in its own individual plastic bag, hanging on a door handle in full view of the street !!!

When SheeHoo Must Sing left the states we had so many of those nasty wire hangers we could have started our own laundry service......

HeeHoo also hates tumble dryers, once upon a time, he took it upon his misguided self to do the laundry while the girls were at work. He threw it all in the washing machine, then threw it all in the tumble dryer on full heat, sat back with his favourite "MacAddict" magazine and hey ho out came teensy weeny little garments that could have possibly fitted a Barbie doll on a thin day !!

The Girls never ever allowed Father into the laundry again !!

But back to my New Years resolution - HeeHoo loves, nay insists, on a good knife edge crease down the front of his trousers.

I have tried to tell him that knife edge creases went out with Al Capone but he will not have it !! I do try to oblige but sometimes there are more exciting things to be done and a perfunctionary press is all that one has time for.

However the crunch came the other day, when HeeHoo came walking towards me with a black look on his face.

I must admits he did look like one of those ZUPCO buses crabbing down the road, as his perfectly pressed knife edge crease in the front of his chinos, started at the top near the zip and then wavered like a serrated knife edge down to the back of the ankle.

Ooops !! Trouble !! Discretion being the better part of valor, I made a hasty retreat and amended my New Year resolutions pronto.......

Wishing you all every happiness for 2010 and may all that we have been praying for for the last ten years, come true this year.

There's a pause for breath at the beginning of January but a full programme for the second half of the month as follows:

Thursday 14 January at 1.10 p.m.
Lunchtime Talk - The Symphony after Beethoven: 1 [Michael Bullivant] This will be a follow-up to the previous series which attempted to answer the question "what is a symphony?" and will look at how Beethoven's Nine irrevocably changed a composer's approach to a symphony. Further talks will examine specific works in more detail. Admission: $1.00 per talk or $8.00/R60.00 for the full term - eleven talks.

Friday 15 January at 6.30 p.m. Verdi: Rigoletto

Monday 18 January at 7.00 p.m. Bleak House
The outstanding BBC production of Bleak House will be shown again by popular request, this time in three parts; the first will finish at around 10.15 p.m.
"Brilliantly modern and essentially Dickensian... tense, pacey and star-studded." [The Daily Telegraph] "... this glorious adaptation transforms soap opera into art." [The Times] "A masterpiece." [The Observer]

Brideshead Revisited and Little Dorrit among other classic serials will be shown in the next few months and there will also be more films, beginning with Australia starring Nicole Kidman in early February. Admission: $7.00 / R50.00 [$3.00 / R25.00 individual evenings]

Lunchtime Talk - The Symphony after Beethoven: 2 [Michael Bullivant] Admission: $1.00 Friday 29 January at 6.30 p.m. Return of the Firebird There will be a supper interval. Carriages: 9.45 p.m. Return of the Firebird includes three ballets, Scheherazade, The Firebird and Petrushka, all first seen in Paris a hundred years ago. "This indispensable DVD offers re-creations of three key Diaghilev productions from the peak of the Ballets Russes with choreography, d cor and costumes as near as possible to the original staging.... very spectacular indeed, the presentation vividly and colourfully handled, but what makes this so enjoyable is the excitement and overt eroticism of the dancing itself." [The Penguin Guide] Admission: $3.00 / R25.00

5) CONDOLENCES/ IN MEMORIUM/ WREATH FUNDS

Thank you so much for your message of sympathy at the passing away of my beloved mother, Audrey. We feel blessed that that we lived so close to her until she was in her 80s as she was such an integral & important part of our lives . She was the most wonderful grandmother to Lindsay & Greg and she was so proud of them.

I think the most inspiring thing about her was her positivity & enthusiasm. She only ever saw the good side of things, & got enormous pleasure out of life, & this was infectious. Her love of teaching & the fact that she taught for so long, together with her involvement in the theatre, tennis & bridge, meant that she touched many lives, & I have been overwhelmed at the messages of sympathy I have received, making clear the esteem in which she was held.

I went to Farnham to sort out her things and for the funeral, & it was abundantly clear that, although she had been there for only 2 years, she was very much a part of the community & was very much loved. I am attaching the eulogy that was delivered at the service by her godson, Ian Sargeant, who, with his wife, Margaret, and their family, was so incredibly good to her. She was very happy in Farnham, as she had been in Zimbabwe, & her ashes are buried next to her cousin, Ivy's, in a spot I know that she would have approved of, under some beautiful English trees and next to a glorious rose garden.

She lived life to the full, & she made a difference. There is so much to be thankful for, most of all that she didn't suffer. She left life as she had lived it, with no fuss, & she will live on in the memories of all of those who loved her.

Kevin Ian Mackay ( KIM ) Formally from Bulawayo, passed away on 30th December 2009 after a long illness in the UK. Your suffering is now over, may you rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to Nicky, Angus and Russell.
Ken and family.

Our Sincere condolences for the passing of Naas Terblanche, another legend passes.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you....
From all the Broomberg Family.

7) BULAWAYO NEWS

Hello to all ex dancers

The names in the last few newsletters were mostly from the Ainscough studio, and I thought I might add a few from the Elaine Archibald studio, prominent at the time. I danced under the name Pat Lynn (for reasons which now escape me!) Stuart - now Pat Lorber, happily settled in Norfolk, England. Started with Elaine at 5, left to take Advanced RAD in Johannesburg with Marjorie Sturman, then gave up ballet. My contemporaries at the time were Desmond Kelly, Renee Collocott, Ken Yeatman, Dudley van Loggenburg, Pam Bryce, Muriel Jennings, Mary Rankin, Joe and Jack Stidolph, Noreen Chisholm, Judy Whalley (later Hardy) Pam and Denise Vincent. The older dancers in the studio at the time were Algie Hayes-Hill (later Gary Burne of the Royal Ballet and CAPAB, as already mentioned) Margaret Knoesen, Thelma Buncker, Mary Davis, Molly Robinson, Merle Ratham, Maureen Bambrough, Bridget Badham, Dawn Summerton, Rosemary Tones and Shirley Woolfson. One of my clear memories was dancing at the Rhodes Centenary Exhibition with the Sadlers Wells Opera Company in Aida and Gloriana, to John Cranko's teaching and choreography. I still remember how kind Constance Shacklock, (the mezzo-soprano who sang Amneris in Aida), was to us little kids - she died this last July at 86.

Desmond went on to have a distinguished career with Festival Ballet, and the Royal Ballet, becoming Assistant Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet and retired last year to become Artistic Director of the Elmhurst School for Dance. Mary Davis, Gary Burne and (I think) Maggie Knoesen, all, sadly, died young. I can so clearly remember Gary's magnetic onstage personality. Noreen is, to the best of my knowledge, still an examiner in London. Dawn Summerton started her own school, as did Judy Whalley (Hardy) who is now in Australia. I believe Ken Yeatman, after a performing career in Britain and America, was teaching in South Africa. Dudley van Loggenburg danced with Festival Ballet, and taught in South Africa. I think Bridget Badham married and lived in England, but I'm not sure whether she remained here . More at

including even earlier records.
Best wishes to all Zimbabweans and ex-Zimbabweans now scattered all over the world, who may read this. Pat Lorber

I was in the class of '59 at Churchill which means I left school 50 years ago - scary thought! To Hannes Botha and his Amazing Team

Many of our golden oldies will have receive only your gift this year and so our thanks to you is even more meaningful as you have helped us make the holiday season as happy as possible for our residents.

May you be blessed for your ongoing support of Edith Duly and may you see God's richest blessings for a wonderful 2010!

2. What a Day!

Sunday 20th saw the OMs Hooligan bowlers take on Busters in a VERY Sociable "Social Day" challenge at bowls.
Music while you "played" was provided by Neville Ford and his son and 12 ends were over by 11.30 with OMs proving the winners (they had practiced).

The second session - more serious - saw Busters and their supporters get their revenge and definitely came first in showing OMs how to "party and put it away" in a manner not seen before. All this accompanied by music from Frank Reynolds till 11.30 pm.

Thanks to all for their wonderful support!

PROPERTIES FOR SALE:
AUSTRALIA - Property Prices Set to Soar

Property prices across Australia have jumped almost 6 percent this year and will continue to rise even in the country's most expensive suburbs, experts have said. The average Australian home has gained $28,194 in value since January this year and is now worth almost half a million dollars at $477,865, according to the RP Data-Rismark Home Value Index.

The Market is Heating Up - This is the Time to Invest

We had an excellent response to our last ad in the Morning Mirror, with a number of property investors wanting to invest in property in Australia. We are currently working with these investors from southern Africa on Joint Venture Projects whereby they put a deposit into one of our residential developments & we offer 20% returns on the amount invested. At the end of the development phase, the investor owns the property outright. Since the recession, banks have tightened up on lending making opening up new tracts of residential land difficult for developers. As a result, Wealth Acceleration Group began looking at additional ways to fund our projects. We believe that this Joint Venture Project offers investors an excellent strategy to get into property in Australia.

We intend making a trip to South Africa to meet with investors in JHB/DBN/CT to discuss all the details of the JV. Alternatively, investors are welcome to come to Australia, meet with us & look at the projects for themselves.

I am wondering if you can help me find some information about my grandmother. She was a Music teacher at Eveline School in Bulawayo from the years of about 1910 - 1930. She created a music scholarship (in her name) which was in place still in the 1960s. Her name was Mary Blackwood Lewis (nee Dick). If possible I was looking for a photo of her too.

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.
Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution.
I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
Please contact ColRose Consultants and ask to speak to Colin. Cell: 091 2 353 817 e-mail: colrose@yoafrica.co.zw
