PAB and the Academy - Karajan conducts Richard Strauss Monday 15 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 5.15 p.m. Admission by donation The last of the series features "An Alpine Symphony" which was Strauss's last and longest symphonic poem. On one level it is a fifty-minute depiction of the ascent of an Alpine peak, at another an allegory of life scored with immense resource for an orchestra of over 120 players. PAB and the Academy - A Christmas Carol: Ballet Friday 19 December in the Robert Sibson Hall at 8.00 p.m. "A Christmas Carol", premiered by the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992 and described as "an opulent mixture of ballet, musical and theatre", is closely based on Dickens' story and has a score by Carl Davis that incorporates many well-known carols. The production toured Britain, meeting with great success, and was even presented in China. The reviews were full of praise with the Guardian writing of "unassailable magic, the heartstrings are truly plucked" whilst the Daily Express recommended the ballet as "perfect Christmas entertainment" .
