Now this trip is not to be taken lightly I can assure you... the municipal landfill has an aura all of it's own, as well as an odour all of it's own !! Gathering up the neighbours' trash too, we set off most pungently down the road.... we had removed everything from the truck that was not bolted down, including the rubber mat that protects the lining of the truck. What goes into a Municipal Landfill site in Zimbabwe seldom re-emerges trust me !! As we approached the dump, doors firmly locked, windows rolled up tight, as if by magic, emerged from the tall grass, the most amazing collection of raggle taggle gypsies you have ever seen. They were undoubtedly human, but their eyes were raging red and bloodshot, their hair matted with dirt and their clothes were held together with dung clotted threads. I had been warned of this this heart breaking sight, but nothing could ever lead me to believe that people actually existed in this sub human way. Racing to the truck, they heaved themselves over the sides and as we drove, they rummaged furiously through our miserable, stinking, maggot ridden refuse. Bottles and plastic bags were tucked into torn shirts, scraps of fetid food were stuffed voraciously into gaping mouths .... nothing could ever have prepared me for this heartbreaking experience. We dutifully went to pay at the Municipal office, but the supervisor graciously allowed us through without paying !! We were after all doing the job of the city council ... As we approached the dumping area, the stinking rotting fumes that emanated from the trash parted, and dozens of grey ghostly figures, the tattered remnants of human beings, could be seen scrabbling slowly, as if in a trance, through the morass of mud and filth. Mad Max and his gang leapt off the truck, the trash miraculously dragged off with them, and began to fight over a box of wine bottles. No one bothers with re-cycling in Zimbabwe, these sad scarecrow scavengers do it for us .... Timidly opening the window a tiny bit I had the temerity to ask who they would be voting for next month ? Would they perhaps be voting against a government which had reduced them to being the very dregs of humanity ? Perhaps they like this odious life of theirs, perhaps this abject filth and misery is all they have ever known, but as one they gave me an answer that I did not want to hear ..... ++++++++++++ + 2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH Maleme Dam is spilling, Mtshelele Dam s spilling, Hillside Dam is spilling yeehaa !!! Whilst I know this may be completed unconventional, I would like to contribute something to your Morning Mirror.and I am sure my observations are shared by many throughout the world.in fact, perhaps that may be a wonderful subject of one of your future editions."What has the Morning Mirror come to mean to you?".. I shall start the trend and reflect with you what Tuesdays have come to mean in my life. perhaps frivolous, but nonetheless so important to my sense of belonging in the world. the Morning Mirror carries the hopes and dreams of so many. I recall HeeHoo talking about the substantial readership of the MM and how extraordinary that this number continues to grow.well Mags, it grows because for so many of us the MM is that small memory of a time that was. Where there was an abundance of laughter and joy, where there was always somebody who could help you out and make a plan and where there was always someone who knew the answer to even the smallest bit of trivia. Oh how I find myself wishing for those days. Where none of us had cellphones and yet we never ever missed out on any social function. Where boys had to gather their courage and call the home phone, hoping and praying that their current crush's fierce father did not answer. The Morning Mirror for me still captures the essence of our life in sleepy Bulawayo. It is my connection to the world. Ironic considering our small town and innocent roots. It is the way I have come to celebrate old friends achievements, mourn dear friends losses and remember those who still believe in the dream to hang in there. So many of us who live around the world have this alarming sense of displacement. I feel it daily. I have a great life and a successful career. I want for nothing. Yet I do not know my neighbours. The Morning Mirror is my connection to my neighbours. So much of who I am was determined by the environment I grew up - and the Morning Mirror is a reflection of that environment. The caring for others, compassionate assistance without a blink of an eye (why is NOTHING too much of a problem for a Zimbabwean?) and the celebratory nature of the editorials all lend to making me heartsore and joyous in one fell swoop! So Maggie, thank you. Especially, but not only, to you. Thank you to all those souls who still care enough to tell the world about their achievements. Thank you for passing them on. Thank you to the people in Bulawayo who still believe in celebration and who hold music concerts, ballets and theatre exhibitions. Thank you to those who share recipes, titbits and glorious hints about domesticated bliss. Thank you to those who care about the hedgehogs and tortoises (I can't remember when last I saw any). For those who offer lifts, volunteer their services, pass on messages to friends, share photos, reminisce. Thank you to those who venture out and create places for the Bulawayo community to share meals and laughter. A big thank you to those who care for the sick and elderly, the Bulawayo community who never ever stop giving. Please know, each and everyone of you, that you make up the fabric of a place that so many of us throughout the world hold dear. We love your stories, we are nostalgic and we love our home town of Bulawayo. GINA WILSON S.A. +++++++ the other day we wondered what was going on in Chelmsford Road, well a sign read CBC ROAD WORKS, What a wonderful job these boys have done, We have a feeling it was detention! It was Friday afternoon, ! as every time a car went past the poor chaps had to stand to attention and salute then on passing they picked up their shovel and carried on, not a single pot hole to be seen, all filled in with rubble and sand. Perhaps you had better investigate this before we give them a HUGE big Rose, it may be punishment, what a wonderful idea, helping to keep our roads safe. I wonder if the boys enjoyed it ! AND MAGS BY THE WAY , US SNOBS IN BURNSIDE WERE WITHOUT A POWER PHASE FOR S E V E N WEEKS, FROM MID DEC TILL LAST FRIDAY.and when zesa did come they thought it a huge joke, just a tripped switch on the Burnside Road, we had no steamy shower, no geyser, no oven, no borehole pump and our house is all connected up to the borehole so you lot had more water!! three lights working, and it took them 7 weeks to flick a switch. how's that for an efficient company .!!. Lucky we all have a huge sense of humour. My son was out from Germany, what a nice Xmas he had, try baking without an oven. Keep up the good work Mags. regards Rosanne. +++++++ I would like all Zimbabweans to know that worldwide there are many ex-Zimbos suffering with you and feeling helpless that they cannot do more. Leaving one's beloved home country is a gut wrenching experience and the pain can take many years to ease. In addition, watching the demise of Zimbabwe and the suffering of its people is also painful. So just because we live in SA (or anywhere else) does not mean that we are smug. We all left for our own reasons but I can guarantee you that every one of us misses the place like crazy and would prefer to have not been forced to leave. Please give thanks to the many people who give a lot of time and money in helping their brethren across the border. We collect money for your charities from friends and family afar, spend fortunes phoning and visiting loved ones back home, take risks for our suffering friends that only a Zimbo can understand, send money, food, medication and clothing parcels for our domestics and their ill children. And if anyone even mentions they are travelling up North they are seized upon to take a box or two with them! I also know of amazing people who organise fund raising events in far off places, and recently a couple drove from Jo'burg just to deliver formula to an orphaned rhino! I haven't mentioned our constant worry and sleepless nights about the pain that our nearest and dearest go through every day in Zimbabwe. I sincerely hope that Zim and SA don't become rivals. We are all still Zimbabwean and no matter where in the world we live our hearts still break when we think of our old lives. Please know that we feel your pain and continue to pray for a better life for all of you - and hey, it gives us something to do in the dark...! Yours in Hospice Peggy Schonken ++++++ I moved to Bulawayo in April last year from Chegutu and was really impressed that the infrastructure was still functioning. Needless to say, we have had a sudden collapse since then. Having witnessed two horrific accidents at separate robots in the past month I feel the time has come to try and get residents to donate a bulb. The cause of both these accidents was lights working in one direction and nothing in the other. A bit more caution by the drivers involved would have prevent the accidents, however the cost of repairing the vehicles would have purchased a few hundred bulbs. I have tried to make contact with Council on the matter and am awaiting a call from them. My suggestion would be to ask the community to BUY A BULB AND SAVE A LIFE. yours faithfully Trevor Lowein 0912239845 ++++++++ Seeking God's Heart 2008 (with Angus Buchan) Including a Mighty Men's Conference, Youth Event and Incredible Family Worship Service! We pray for the people of Zimbabwe, that they will not lose hope. You know I take my hat off to Zimbabweans, because no matter what, they always have a plan. I read the article you wrote about Borrow Street Swimming pool and I laughed, because I too remember it that way, with the pink fish, the everlasting, the smell of chlorine and the laughter from the kids. There's no place like home, should things turn, I'd come home in a flash. Africa has quality of life, and that lacks here. We were always able to employ maids and gardeners, and now we are the maid and gardener. We have big houses there with lots of land and here your neighbour know exactly what you're having for supper, and knows how many times you burnt the food in the week, even knows when you and your husband aren't talking. Anyway, just to let you know that we are praying for you all. Maureen Cunningham
