Coming back from Edith Duly last week, feeling grumpy as we had no water, no power, no phones, no fuel and no money ......... I saw in front of me, a man walking down the Fife Street carrying a giant wooden cross on his back !! He was walking from Mutare to Plumtree carrying his cross because "God had called him to walk." The sign on the back of the cross said "Heal our Land Oh Lord" I was terrified to take a photo as I have been through that before ! But I stopped and spoke to him, a large curious crowd also gathered around us. His name is Roy Perkins, born in Zambia, he had lived in Zimbabwe for most of his life, and now working at Maforga Christian Mission in Mozambique. Realising that God had a task for him, he spent all of October in prayer and fasting, and it was God who called him 2 weeks before Christmas, to walk for the Lord. He vowed to walk from Mutare to Plumtree and from Beitbridge to Chirundu.... .. He says he will do anything for the Lord, and walking thousands of Kilometres is but a small thing to do. While fasting his Bible fell open at a chapter in Thessalonians and the scripture read " " Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more." Roy says as he walks he gets stronger and stronger , so does his faith and so does his conviction that prayer will make things come right in Zimbabwe. He admits that his shoulders get sore and so do his feet ! The front of the cross has the scripture "If my people will humble themselves, pray and seek my faces "One Chronicles Chapter 7 Verse 14." The cross was cut from his garden, it is a Cidrella tree, he says it is not heavy. I asked him to stop and have a drink with me, and we went to Sisters in Haddon and Sly. He parked his cross carefully against a lamp post ...... and drank two glasses of fresh orange very thirstily !! Roy Perkins - Missionary extraordinary - a man with an infallible faith in prayer, such an unassuming man. He has no one with him, he walks with his crate towed behind the cross, bearing his rolled up mattress and a blanket. He relies on people stopping out of curiosity and stays the night usually in farm houses along the road. Not at all worried about his being hassled by the police, he says in Bulawayo they are different to the Harare police...... .. They wave him on his way with good wishes. Outside Harare he was stopped by the police and questioned as to why he was doing his lonely walk so close to the election.... Roy told them that they should be grateful that he was praying for them, because things are so tense n Zimbabwe, without prayer it could all turn into a nasty bloodbath as has Kenya !! He says a number of people have been inspired to walk a few kms with him and that he is never lonely as many many people have befriended him along the road. Roy plans to have completed his walking vigil by mid March. His e mail address is royandtrish@ yahoo.co. uk My faith has been rekindled and my soul restored !! SEE THE FABULOUS PICS OF AN HARARE POTHOLE ON http://www.morningm irror.africanher d.com This is undoubtedly the winner, Harare at last has something better than Bulawayo !! }}}}}}}} Ascot Race course road takes the cake. This should be the new course track for the Jamboree. JACK ++++++++++++ I can't send a photo but can I enter the junction of 23rd Avenue and Matopos Road?? The potholes have been filled with bricks, which have been washed out again by the rain and by cars driving over them, so the intersection now resembles a construction site (David's description) or a war zone (mine) depending on ones point of view. Add to this the fact that the lights have not been working at this intersection for a couple of weeks, and it's a recipe for disaster. Especially at 7.15 in the mornings when the schools / Plumtree Road traffic is at its heaviest! A bad road is Essex Road in Hillside, from Napier Avenue to Cormorant Avenue. It's always full of Whitestone School traffic and it's like an obstacle course. The potholes may not be too big, but there are literally hundreds of them. Mattie Road is similar, although not so busy. There is a huge hole on the corner of Dorset Road and Leander Avenue, which stretches almost all the way across the road. This one is particularly dangerous as this route is used as a short-cut for traffic wanting to avoid Cecil Avenue (which is pretty bad as well) and it is just before the corner so traffic is forced onto the wrong side of the road at the corner to avoid it. And there's a huge, car-swallowing hole on Fairbridge Way, near the intersection with Masefield Road, for which one has to queue to go around. And then all the new ones I encountered on the way back from the airport on 8th January, having been away for 3 1/2 weeks, which definitely weren't there on 12th December when I left...... L.F. ++++++ 2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH see our wonderful pictures of Upper Ncema on website http://www.morningm irror.africanher d.com +++++++++ WATER WOES In our area (Burnside) we had no municipal water more or less from the end of July 2007 until last week, although we did have the occasional visit from the Ingwebu bowser. In 2005 we had no municipal water at all from the end of September until the 10th December, and the bowser never came once. Our bin is often left unemptied. We made our own incinerator from an old 44 gallon drum, and burn the day after collection should happen. However the council don't want to collect the ashes of what they should have collected the week before, so it often has to be buried! We don't have a single street light, and are not likely to ever have any. Our roads are seldom maintained and don't have any markings. Our verges are never cut, although they belong to the Council. We have no mains sewerage system (it stops at Moffat Avenue, about 2km from us) and are not likely to ever be connected to one as it would be 'too expensive' to construct. We have to pay for our septic tanks to be emptied by BCC, who have a monopoly, charge a fortune, and don't always empty the tanks when they do come. What are we paying for??? I do have the utmost respect for many of their staff, whom I feel are doing a difficult job under impossible circumstances, but it does seem that their priorities are somewhat warped. Who can confirm how much revenue BCC pull in each month, how much they spend, and how their budget is structured at present? I'm sure we'd all love to know what we are paying for! Symphony No.1 will be followed by a film in which Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti and Sir Simon Rattle rehearse and talk about Mahler. Booking is open at the Academy for the first concert of the year: Thursday 31 January at 7.30: Cristina Granero (flute) & Yuki Matsushima (piano) Wednesday 30 January at 1.10 - Piano Nonsense: Peter Rollason RVW Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of the major English composers of the twentieth century - for my money, perhaps the greatest. He died fifty years ago on 26 August 1958, just six weeks short of his 86th birthday, still in full flood as a composer. His Ninth Symphony had received its first performance earlier in the year and he was at work on several major projects including an opera and a cello concerto. For the anniversary Tony Palmer has made a new film on his life and works, "O Thou Transcendent" , and it will be shown on DVD at the Academy on SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY at 7.30 P.M. It lasts about two-and-a-half hours so, with a short interval, will be over at about 10.15. There will be no admission charge but donations to the Hudson Fund will, of course, be welcomed! A review of the film follows this newsletter and I can thoroughly recommend it; when it arrived on New Year's Eve, I thought I'd watch the first few minutes and sat engrossed for the entire afternoon right to the end. If you love VW's music, you won't need any encouragement to come - and if you don't know too much about him, then come and find out more about a great composer - and a very great man! (Incidentally, for those who worry about this sort of thing, the title "O Thou Transcendent" comes from Walt Whitman's poem "The Explorers" Vaughan Williams set as the finale of his Sea Symphony.) ++++++++ 4) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES "I'd like to award a huge raspberry to those who think they are above queueing. Last week I stood for ten minutes in a bank queue. Suddenly a man who was certainly not in front of me when I joined the queue barged in front of me, without a word. I asked him what he was doing, and he replied that he was "there before me". I pointed out that no- one except the lady in front had been standing in front of me when I joined the queue, so asked how he could have been in front of me. His reply was that he had asked the customer in front of me to "keep his place" whilst he went to "fill in forms". Surely the whole point of a queue is that everyone is subjected to the same delay, and this is what makes this system fair to all. I asked the man whether it would be fair if he went off for ten minutes to have a cup of tea, or to do other business, and was treated with rudeness in return. I did make sure that I told him I thought he was being very rude, and his reply was that I should not use strong language on him!! By this time there were perhaps fifteen people behind me, all of whom were delayed further by someone who couldn't be bothered to fill in forms before joining the queue but just HAD to get things done without waiting his turn. He should have been standing behind them. I hope he is reading this, and feels ashamed. For his information, the day before I had spent 1 hour 45 minutes queueing in the same bank to be served by the forex teller. I had been called out of the queue by the manager (regarding a mistake made by the bank), and because of this I lost my place. Admittedly it was only two places from the end of the queue, and I only had to stand for 20 minutes longer than I might otherwise, but when I was called out I had been standing for almost an hour. I have been living in London, Ontario, Canada since 1984, but was born in Port Elizabeth SA. I moved to Joburg when I was about 8. I remember going on vacation with my family to Rhodesia and Zambia in 1966 at the age of 12. Our first stop was a few days at Windermere where my dad's aunt was the owner. Her name was May (not sure if she had married) but her maiden name would be Hart as my dad's mom was Elma Hart. I recall staying in a rondavel and walking down to the valley where there was a river. I think we met a man there who was a cousin- he might have been in his late 20's then. That was the last contact I had with my great aunt and the hotel and was wondering if you could shed any light on the history of the hotel and May. My dad passed on in 2003 and my mom doesn't remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
