There are still a few places available and payment should be made on the night. The production, directed by Franco Zeffirelli and conducted by Herbert von Karajan, comes from La Scala with Mirella Freni as Mimi and Gianni Raimondi as Rodolfo. Richard Osborne wrote that the latter "was one of the most underrated tenors of his generation" and went on to say that the performance also featured "a theatrically vivid ensemble of Bohemians and a Mimi of the finest musical pedigree". He considered that Karajan's "reading has a raw energy and heart-rending immediacy". Zeffirelli restaged his production especially for the film and it is very lavish, especially in the Cafe Momus scene.
