There are no words to describe the attitude of our people at the moment. Could it be utter despair ? Could it be misery? Could it be submissive surrender ? Possibly it is abject desperation ? We have sunk so low we are unable to climb out of our "slough of despond" .... A strange silence seems to fill the land, there is no laughter, no anger, no nothing. We are a nation gasping and reeling in horror at what has passed and at what lies ahead of us. To put it all in very simplistic terms, In 1993 a gardener earned $300 a month and this could then buy 150 loaves of bread. Today 150 loaves of bread cost $450,000.00 and that same gardener, at a wage stipulated by the Government body, earns $30,000.00 a month ...... We have become a nation of "starers", we stare in horror at the prices in the shops, we stare in horror at the empty shelves, we stare in horror at the winding bank queues, at the lengthy ever present queues for the basic commodities that we are no longer able to afford. Or we just stare at the floor in misery, poverty and desperation. Fuel queues are a thing of the past as few people can afford fuel at $14000.00 a litre !! Working on the black market rates this is 50% more than the cost of fuel in the USA ....... How can a working man provide for his family when his bus fare is now $20,000 a day to get to work and back home. This means it would cost him about $420,000 a month and his salary is $300,000.00 a month....... ... Usually a feisty people, we are all unable to think beyond obtaining our next meal, no time for thoughts of mass demonstrations and protests. Would we dare at any rate ? Water cannons pour in from other so called "civilised" countries and our once protective forces have now become ugly fully armed forces, who have been given verbal permission from the Top to "bash" all who dare to protest against this shocking state of affairs. There are some very wealthy people here, bankers, the top uncivil servants and a handful of able entrepreneurs. but the rest of the people are literally starving. What does our future hold ? We either die by the bullet or die of starvation ? What is the rest of the world doing ? Yawn..... "those ruddy colonies are so tiresome, that fellow will one day get his come -uppance" ...Yawn.... "I weep for you," the Walrus said: "I deeply sympathize." With sobs and tears he sorted out Those of the largest size, Holding his pocket-handkerchief Before his streaming eyes. ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ ++ 1 JENI WILLIAMS AND THE WOMEN OF ZIMBABWE WE ARE PROUD OF YOU Washington -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spotlighted the achievements of Zimbabwean human rights activist Jennifer Williams with an International Women of Courage Award presented at the State Department March Williams, founder of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) -- a civil society organisation established in 2003 to protest government abuses -- accepted the award in the name of the group's more than 45,000 members. There isn't much to celebrate in Bulawayo these days, so please come and join us as we celebrate our 50 Years of Ability! This year the King George VI Centre and School will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The buildings were officially opened on 6 July 1957 and so on 6 July 2007 we are planning to celebrate this achievement. Just to give you some background; for 50 years KGVI has been caring for physically disabled children from all over Zimbabwe. It is the only secondary school in the whole country which caters for physically disabled children and the only junior school in the southern half of the country. Our enrolment this year is the highest ever with 250 students, 96 of whom are boarders. Of these children 75% have some form of physical disability which could mean the child is in a wheelchair, on crutches or hearing impaired. The students follow the normal government curriculum and the school takes them through from nursery level to O level and sometimes beyond. The Centre is a non-governmental organisation and as such, for many years now, has had to survive on private donations. We are very proud that we are still operating despite all the difficulties and in fact our numbers just keep on growing. To mark our celebrations we are planning to hold several events so it's not too early to diarise these so that you can come and join us: * A music and dance show on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 July (and we promise the sound system will be professionally sorted out this time) * A special lunch for anyone who has been part of the KGVI family over the past 50 - whether a student, a staff member or a regular donor (if you know anyone who might qualify please let them know as we want to get as many KGVI people as possible together) * A march by all students and staff from KGVI to the City Hall on Friday 6 July * A supplement in the Chronicle on Friday 6 July (if anyone wants to help sponsor this one please let us know) ++++++ We are proud to announce that the second 'On The Stoep Art Exhibition' is to be held again by popular demand. We have been overwhelmed by all the emails, cards and phone calls following Jimmys death last week. His funeral was held on Friday in Kingston with touching eulogies by his proud grandsons Sandy and Kyle. We would like to thank everyone for their support, flowers and condolences and those who were able to attend the service. We always knew what a popular and loved personality Jimmy was but it was wonderful to see that so many other people felt the same way. Dearest Theresa (Gaga), Jim, Anne, Jack & Families, How very sad we were to learn of Jimmy's (Grandpa Jim) passing. He was such a wonderful man, and 'adopted' Grandpa to many kids, and the most wonderful Father Christmas ever! So many wonderful memories. Our love to you all. Stef, Dave, Kim & Carl +++++++++ THE LATE GREAT JIMMY MCGROARTY I had a very strenuous task on Friday morning,it was Jimmy's Funeral. It was held at Kingston Crematorium which is situated in the grounds of Kingston Cemetery,a very pretty place, especially it being what they call a 'nice' morning here. In fact it was pretty good, being and early spring morning. The magnolia trees are out in full blossom and all the lawns are full of daffodils. This would make you think that winter's over,WRONG. Today and for the first half of next week the forecast is for snow over most of England,we have an Arctic blast on it's way from the North(nowadays they seem to be pretty good at these weather forecasts!). Anyway back to the funeral. It was held at 9am,now after a recent bout of fluI seem to be left with an athsmatic condition, which leaves me very short of breath when walking. Consequently I need to stop every 100yds or so for "a blow up".I caught a bus as close as I could but was still left with a hike of about a mile to the cemetery. Not having been there before, I'd downloaded a map from Transport For London on my computer. Well this proved to be a diabolical combination. As I said I needed to keep stopping and resting to get my breath back, well imagine me a 64 year old man leaning on the nearest wall, lamppost, sign, you name it, anything that could support me,and of course I kept asking passers by could they help me, "was I on the right road to the cemetery". With my heavy tortured breathing most of them thought I'd never make it !!!,others didn't seem or want to know what I was talking about. One beautiful young Indian girl tried to help, she walked on a bit then came back and asked me "Was it a pub that I was looking for?!".I eventually arrived at the cemetery just as Jimmy's family and the few friends that had made it were emerging from the chapel after the service. We all then adjourned to a Pub near Twickenham, the St Margarets, where we had to wait for an hour for it to open. (people of a lesser constitution would have wilted and gone home!).A lovely snack luncheon was arranged and a good few pints of bitter were consumed by yours truly(My dialysis matron would have done her nut had she seen me!).Many a tale was told of Jimmy, and strangely enough I found that like myself it seemed that everyone remembered Jimmy from playing at places that strangely enough also served alcohol. Many good old Bulawayo venues were remembered,Matopos Hotel,Windermere, The Glass Castle,The Crows Nest,The McMurray Hall,Essexvale Hotel,The Round House(Hotel Rio)Ascot Race Course,The Parkin Motel,The Palace Hotel(where I think he played for your wedding?).Anyway I can assure everyone that Jimmy was sent away in good spirit!.Cheers from a to be cool London. This has meant that bereaved families who wished to have their departed cremated have had to travel as far as Mutare in order to use their facilities. Very many families were simply unable to afford the huge costs involved. In addition ordinary burial fees are now also very expensive. As a result of the above, a group of concerned citizens decided that they would endeavour to raise the funds necessary for the Bulawayo Crematorium to be completely refurbished as the Bulawayo City Council were not in a financial position to assist Investigations revealed that an almost total rebuild was necessary and that this would require the importation from South Africa of the required materials - firebricks, special cement, rails etc. Costings were obtained from Pyros Cremator Equipment in South Africa and the Beit Trust was approached to see if it would be willing to fund these imports. Mr Neil Todd and the Rev Noel Scott, armed with a letter of support from the City Council and details of the Pyros Quotation approached the Beit Trust requesting assistance. The Beit Trust agreed to the request. However, in the interim, the prices in South Africa had increased and the Trust was prevailed upon to increase their assistance to cover these increases. An amount of R133,763.00 has now been paid to the suppliers by the Trust. All the required materials are now available. There are, however, additional costs which must be met in order that the refurbishment can actually take place ! In order that a guarantee is given, Pyros requires that their own experts oversee the operation, commission the cremator and train the subsequent operators. These costs must be met by ourselves as a further approach to the Beit Trust would suggest that Bulawayo is not willing to help itself The local labour including brick layers will be provided by United Spring & Forging The costs to be met locally are summarised as follows: • 3 x air fares: Durban-J'Burg- Byo return Approximately R6,000 • Accommodation: 10days for 2 persons (Refractory Masons) 6 days for 1 person (Specialist Engineer) • Living out allowance for the 3 persons for their period in Bulawayo • Vehicle(s) and fuel for travelling to the site etc • Transport of the materials from South Africa to Bulawayo - probably payable in R A Committee has been set up to raise the required funds outlined above and it presently consists of: Mr D Hubbard (Chairman) Rev Noel Scott Mr Neil Todd Mr Roger Enslin (City Council) Mr Mike Burns Mr Roger Smith (ABUZ) Any monies received will be handled by a professional investment company who will keep separate books of account and will disburse such funds on a voucher system On behalf of the Committee I am appealing to Members to sponsor one (or part of one) of the above cost centres Other avenues are also being explored by other Committee Members at the same time Please be kind enough to advise me as to what contribution you feel able to make. Note: it is envisaged that, in consultation with Council and the Funeral Parlours, a levy will be raised on the basic cremation fee (say 15%) and this levy will be held in trust by the selected investment company to provide the funds for future, regular maintenance work to be carried out on the cremator. I would urge you to be generous as the Beit Trust has already paid the major part of the costs. It looks like it is two mature black men who actually do the break-ins, and then the Sunny with another two black men inside immediately parks alongside to pick up these two thieves. In our case luckily, I was observant and raised the alarm before these two individuals managed to take anything from the vehicle. Normally one of us stays with the vehicle but in this moment of madness we decided that both of us go shopping in two different shops to save time - in this instance, Solomon's and Matabele Meats which is directly opposite Solomon's. Luckily I turned to look back at the truck before going into Solomon's and noticed that something suspicious was going on by the truck. I decided there and then that it was not a good idea to not have me sitting in our pickup, and started walking back to Mat Meats to get the car keys from my husband. That was when I saw these two men starting to break into the pickup and managed, as previously mentioned, to raise the alarm and scare them off. Unfortunately the driver's window had been broken although as previously mentioned nothing was stolen. WANYE HOSLEY has been to see me twice now to discuss this whole matter and to correct issues and rumours that were totally incorrect about the proposed Nat Parks croc farm, and the 'rumoured' feeding program! He is now VERY concerned that the story I put out will damage his reputation and relations with National Parks......and National Park's reputation! As far as I am concerned he has cleared the issue up, and as in my previous mail, has informed me that there is absolutely NO chance of any of our Kariba Ele's being used as food for the crocs! The story that I got was obviously 'bar' talk, and wholly exaggerated and misconstrued. This being the case, and the fact that Wayne has now been unfairly implicated and accused, I feel that he is owed an apology on my behalf! The fact that I sent the mail out before properly investigating the issue has caused problems for him, and I therefore withdraw any accusations against him or National Parks. MY ONLY CONCERN WAS FOR THE KARIBA ELEPHANTS. The matter has now been cleared up, and I am happy that they will be safe from culling. I don't know about the Save River Conservancy Elephant, but basically that is or was not my concern. And as far as the Nat Parks Croc farm plan is concerned, this was never objected to by me! In fact Wayne has brought me fully up to date on that issue as-well, and from what he has told me, I am most impressed with the plan. It is NOT going to be in the Kaburi flood plains area. This has been confused with a plan to build a hotel complex and golf course in that area by an international concern! It will apparently be out in the Charara area, the other side of the Bannana Farm, and will include a Conservancy that National Parks plan to put in there aswell. It can only be beneficial to Kariba from what I can see, and will create more jobs and employment, and be another tourist attraction. This project has been on the go since last year, has been well planned with feasibility and environmental impact studies and investigations, and has now been given the go ahead! From what I am told, building is about to be put into operation very soon. Once again, my apologies to Wayne....and National Parks....and may I at this stage wish him and Nat Parks good luck in their new venture! Sincerely, Geoff Blyth. I doubt there is any living person who has not asked him/herself "what is the purpose of my life." Unfortunately most of us come to the frustrating realisation that we are likely to end our days without having achieved anything by which to enjoy real self satisfaction or by which to be remembered. Inventive people may leave a legacy of historic value such as Einstein for working out the theory of Relativity, Mitchell for the British fighter Spitfire, Barnes Wallace for his Dam Busting bombs and so on. Few writers ever succeed in the manner of say, William Shakespeare, Ernest Hemmingway or Winston Churchill and hundreds of politicians will be remembered for a long time, though few in a good light. Yet ordinary people of lesser intellect who have done good for their fellow man, as well as for those of generations to follow, will always be remembered. Such deceased people who come easily to mind in the recent African context are Colonel Baden-Powell for establishing the Boys Scouts movement and Emily Hobhouse for her courage and determination to save the lives of Boer women and children in British concentration camps. Now turning to myself. My initial efforts in extending my interest and joy in using my PC and the e-mailing facility set me on the path for which I have become fairly well known. I started ORAFS in a small way by connecting some old Air Force buddies together. This worked well but then spread laterally from a small to a very large number of ORAFS adherents. With this came an ever increasing series of stories and question that all pointed to a wide interest by participants in Air Force and Rhodesian history. This had the compelling effect on me to retain whatever came into the ORAFS orbit in a manner that will be interesting and useful to generations to come. In no way am I competing with the formal records held in museums and the like. I am simply satisfying my new-found desire to capture and retain that special and amazing Rhodesian spirit which is the passion of my mind and soul. If you would like to share your Air Force stories with other ORAFS members, contact me, a special request to those TF'S, VR's and Civilians Those that served in any service will be welcome to join and here I include civilian members. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea commented very favourably on certain tourist attractions and resorts that he had visited in Zimbabwe, but no mention was made of Bulawayo and Matopos. Mrs Bell wrote to him inviting him to visit this part of the country. The First Secretary replied that the Korean Embassy would do its best not to omit Bulawayo and Matopos when the opportunity arose to comment on Zimbabwe's tourism potential and that he personally would very much like to visit Bulawayo and the Matopos. Dear All Old Whitestonians! Here are some photographs of our special 65/25 celebrations so far! i would just love to send the whole lot - nearly 300 photographs! What magical moments. I only wish that it were possible to email to you the fantastic atmosphere and warm fuzzy feeling all round! You may recall from my past correspondence, the Cross Country was our initial celebration kick off. Following a few days of rain, the morning was glorious . We were so very honoured to have with us some very special "Old Boys" pupils who were at the school in the 40's! These founding Whitestonians led the children off the field after the events, each one holding the hand of one of the youngest pupils - only 5 years old - it was quite symbolic - the youngest and eldest. Mike Waddy, one of our original pupils from 1942, unveiled a Sundial commemorating the beginning of our anniversary year. This was followed by the children singing the school song and God Bless Africa - goose-pimple stuff and just so lovely and many parents and guests, including myself, had to wipe away a tear and swallow very hard! The tea was sumptuous and thankfully at the last minute, the 65/25 Committee decided to make jugs and jugs of cold crisp peach ice tea which was a huge hit as the morning turned out to be a scorcher! Sports Day followed on the afternoon of the 2nd of March. For the 65/25 Committee, our sports day began earlier in the morning up in the hall as we began the huge task of blowing up nearly 500 balloons! Yes, admittedly, we did have a helium machine but it was a labour of love to say the least! Only a few red balloons had to be rescued off the roof of the hall and only one popped which was maybe a good thing because it woke us all up - I think the helium was getting to our heads a bit! The balloon event was very special because each child (and some old Whitestonians) had "pledged" a balloon. Each child wrote on a tag a special message, as well as their name and details and the committee ladies then attached these to a balloon. The balloons were sorted and counted into the 3 houses and at 1.45, the house-captains and house staff came and collected their balloons. Time was of the essence once we all reached the field as the balloons had to be distributed very quickly to all the children sitting and waiting. The plane was circling and there was such excitement in the air! Once each child had a balloon, complete with a tag, they marched onto the field, quickly and quietly and formed a big 65. This was done to the song "Our Zimbabwe" by Henry Olonga. The formation went perfectly - all the children, even the little grade 3's knew exactly what to do! We had radio contact with the pilot and after 3 low fly overs and our photo moms clicking madly, Mr De Beer, together with the children began the countdown... ......... ........ 3....2....1 RELEASE!. It was awesome and everyone gasped! A huge cheer went up and the blue African sky was filled with red floating balloons! Again, a moving and emotional moment. The rest of the Sports Day was lovely and at the Braai Social afterwards, there were over 500 people. The field was full of people sitting in groups, picnicking, skotteling, popping open bottles of wine, mixing G and T's, glugging ice cold castles - children running amok and playing everywhere, safe and secure in their school grounds. The air was was filled with the smell of braai, wood smoke and crickets and to top it all - it was a big full yellow moon with not a cloud in the sky! I am told that the music stopped at 1.30 am! Monday morning, Cosmos, our receptionist received a call from a very nice gentleman who is based at the Gwaai - some 250 km away. He said he was phoning to say that he had picked up a balloon in the bush belonging to one of our Grade 3 Boys!!!!!! So as you can see, the magic never stops at Whitestone. Enjoy the photos and for those of you who have not yet sent me your physical address details, please do so as I would like to post off our celebration newspaper, the Whitestone Times, to you all. Many thanks to all of you who "pledged" a balloon. Please do keep in touch. Leaving behind several children in the care of their grandmother, she took the youngest baby on her back as it was still being breast fed. She was found dead from starvation lying beside the river, her baby was found to have died four days after her, also of starvation and dehydration. Hundreds of Zimbabwean Border Jumpers are returned to Zimbabwe, the Land of Lost Hope, by the truck load every day, by the South African Police. ++++++ Be The Change:?
