Its official - Kenyan deep sea big game fishermen need help from Zimbabwe Tiger fishermen !! They spend hours, days, nay weeks, nay years practising on the paltry TigerFish on Kariba, and then head for Marlin territory off the Kenyan Coast !! Breaking all records at Hemingways Resort at Watamu outside Malindi, our intrepid five caught and released five magical marlin in one single glorious week. Together with two other no name brand fishermen, this brought to seven Marlin caught in one week at Hemingways, the previous record being four in one week !! Rick, Dave, the Two Barrys and Adam along with able assistance of Richard and Boetie caught a miscellany of large game sea-fish including sailfish and sharks ! My own excursion into sea fishing was not quite that exhilarating ...... as the seas were fairly fierce, El Capitain suggested we girlie supporters take a seasick tablet and although no nausea ensued, it just simply and squarely puts an ordinary mortal in a comatose state the entire day !! The gentle swell of the waves, the determined movement of the fishermen and gillys as they go about their baiting, out-rigging and luring, all adds up to a soporific, catatonic state of doziness that holds one in a vice like grip of sloth !! But when the rods spin ferociously, when the gillys rush around like crazed madmen moving vast reels and rods and outriggers, when it has been a second before, ,just too much to open even an eyelid, suddenly one is wide awake to see the giant proud and beautiful marlin jump in proud defiance again and again until man triumphs over beast. It can take hours to land such a mighty creature, muscles groan, limbs scream in torment, sweat pours in buckets down a giant harness which prevents the fisherman from disappearing into Davy Jones locker !! "Are you sweating sweetie" screams a gilly in dazed glee as inch by inch the battle is fought and won. Fortunately all big game fishing at Hemingways is "catch and release" , the fish are carefully tagged so they can be monitored and and gently released as quickly as possible back to their azure kingdom. Kenya is amazing, bursting at the seams with tourists, everyone has, not much, but a whole lot more than out own sad Zimbabweans. The towns are poor but bustling, people are happy and smiling, there is food a-plenty, wares for sale on every corner. The airports are inundated with people looking forward to being part of Kenyas thriving hospitality and tourisy industry.... a stark contrast to our own airports where dust and people lay heavy and heartsore. We were like that once, we have as much game to offer the world, as many areas of stark and raw beauty....one day we all promised ourselves... one day.. One day and soon.... Zimbabwe will once again become the centre of the maize triangle and the hub of the tourist industry that we were once, before madness overtook our land...... ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++ 2 NOTICES GOODBYE JIMMY MCGROARTY Jimmy Mcgroarty was a man who touched many lives over many generations in Zimbabwe. Arriving in the country from Scotland with his wife Theresa in the late 1940's he settled in Bulawayo and went on to have 2 sons and a daughter whilst he entrenched himself in the community as a trumpet player and musician of the highest order. Jimmy played at more functions over he next 60 odd years than most people would attend in a lifetime. There are literally tens of thousands of Zimbabweans who have had him play at weddings, 21st's, funerals and parties. Whether he was on his beloved trumpet, or seated at his piano or keyboard, or manipulating his disco, he brought such joy to so many occasions with his infectious enthusiasm, his affability, his incredibly corny jokes and his immense and almost unbelievable ability to recall any song on demand from that huge memory bank that resided somewhere under the mop of unruly white hair. Anyone who knew Jimmy, worked with him or had their lives touched by him loved him. Very rarely does one come across a personality who can only express love, joy and cheerfulness no matter what life throws at him. Sadly Jimmy passed away peacefully in London on Saturday morning the 9th March well into his eighties. He was surrounded by his loving children, Ann, Jack and Jimmy junior as well as his loving wife of over 60 years Theresa, and his devoted grandchildren and sons and daughters in law. Those of us in Bulawayo who knew Jimmy and worked with him send our heartfelt condolences to the family. Jimmy is ready to meet his Maker. Whether his Maker is prepared for the extraordinary pleasure of meeting this wonderful man is another matter ! From Rick and Maggie with great sadness. +++++++++++ FISHING CASTING COMPETITION! ! There isn't much to celebrate in Bulawayo these days, so please come and join us as we celebrate our 50 Years of Ability! This year the King George VI Centre and School will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The buildings were officially opened on 6 July 1957 and so on 6 July 2007 we are planning to celebrate this achievement. Just to give you some background; for 50 years KGVI has been caring for physically disabled children from all over Zimbabwe. It is the only secondary school in the whole country which caters for physically disabled children and the only junior school in the southern half of the country. Our enrolment this year is the highest ever with 250 students, 96 of whom are boarders. Of these children 75% have some form of physical disability which could mean the child is in a wheelchair, on crutches or hearing impaired. The students follow the normal government curriculum and the school takes them through from nursery level to O level and sometimes beyond. The Centre is a non-governmental organisation and as such, for many years now, has had to survive on private donations. We are very proud that we are still operating despite all the difficulties and in fact our numbers just keep on growing. To mark our celebrations we are planning to hold several events so it's not too early to diarise these so that you can come and join us: * A music and dance show on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 July (and we promise the sound system will be professionally sorted out this time) * A special lunch for anyone who has been part of the KGVI family over the past 50 - whether a student, a staff member or a regular donor (if you know anyone who might qualify please let them know as we want to get as many KGVI people as possible together) * A march by all students and staff from KGVI to the City Hall on Friday 6 July * A supplement in the Chronicle on Friday 6 July (if anyone wants to help sponsor this one please let us know) ++++++++ QUATUOR PARISII The Quatuor Parisii is a string quartet established in 1981 which has established a major reputation. They will present a programme including extracts from Bach's Art of Fugue, Beethoven's first Rasumovsky Quartet and Debussy's Quartet in G minor. It's several years since we've had a string quartet in Bulawayo and certainly to have a top quartet from Europe is an outstanding treat so we hope for an excellent turn out for this concert which PAB is able to promote only with the very generous assistance of the Alliance Française. Robert Sibson Hall 7.30 p.m. on Friday 23 March. February saw a huge increase in the number of people requiring meals at the Centre and also a number no longer able to contribute $100 per meal. At $18 000 to the gbp1 you can see how minute the contribution is. As at yesterday the number of meals served was 69 whereas we had averaged 25 before Christmas. The boerewors rolls venture at the Car Racing last Saturday was not entirely satisfactory but nearly paid for the black pot for the solar cooker which must be brought in to use soon if we are to keep up with demand. Our hardworking chef is taking a well earned break in SA trying to get his brother's fruit orchard up and running. He has an understudy and we are sure he will do well. Hopefully we will be better organised for the very much larger Motor Racing event which is to take place later in the year. The Video Library is shortly to be opened and the Committee were delighted with musicals particularly which were handed over when the Alzheimer Group, unfortunately, found they had to close. The library was also handed over and I am sure there were some interesting volumes for some of the enthusiastic readers. The Fashion Show was a great success and much enjoyed by the residents, having given them a talking point for a while afterwards. The proposed Craft Market has to be shelved as there is not sufficient time before Easter to get it organised. There are going to be big changes at the Cottages as more residents are having to give up their independence and accept substantial help from friends and relations as inflation bites and hits whirlwind proportions. There just seems no end in sight and from now on it is even more a matter of survival of the fittest but we must lend as much support as possible to those who literally have no alternative but to make the best of life here. We did a basket price check a couple of weeks back and the result was a horrifying 4 000% over 12 months! We are indeed extremely grateful for some very generous donations in both cash and kind over the last 4 weeks which have helped us to cope but must appeal for such donations to continue. It is costing $100 000 a week to cover the cost of 2 meals for 60+ people a time and the need is most definitely there and rising. The Sponsored Walk, in conjunction with Lions Club of Khumalo is scheduled for 29 April and Sponsor Sheets will be available from Verity Amm office early in April. For those who have family at the Cottages how about making this a fun family day together. There will be a short and a long walk. This is an annual event as far as the Lions Club is concerned. In haste and for your info........ ! Something that horrifies me, and am sure will do the same with you. National Parks are going to cull Elephants to feed crocodiles. Apparently they are going ahead with a plan to build their own Croc Farm here in Kariba. Nothing wrong with the Farm proposal, but what worries me sick is......... the fact that they propose to feed the crocs with OUR ELEPHANT!! They intend to cull between 50 and 100 Elephants per year to feed the croc's. We DO NOT have that sort of population here. Most of our Ele's are 'tame'...human orientated and gentle old creatures! If they even shoot 50.....that will be the end of our Kariba elephant population? And they DO NOT have the right to shoot them in the first place?? They do NOT own the animals..... .although they like to think so!!! They propose to put this farm right in the middle of the Kaburi wilderness game area, on the shoreline opposite Zebra and Antelope Islands. Obviously so that they have direct access to any Elephant wondering past, and the remaining Buffalo and whatever is left there, for food to feed their croc's. Kariba thrives on it's Ele population. Most of them are well acquainted with humans and traffic, and are a pleasure to have around....especiall y as a draw for the few tourists we get here! PLEASE help us protect them by spreading the word about this disastrous idea.....and in the case of some of you, get it to the knowledge of C.I.T.E.S. and any other international organisation interested in conservation who may be able to block these fools in Nat Parks. I have passed this info on to Johnny Rodriguez of ZCTF and to a journalist mate of mine in the UK in the hope that it will become international news. We need to involve WWF and others like them to help us save the Elephant here in Kariba. So please spread the word........ . Geoff Blyth. +++++ Kindly pass this prayer to 12 people: "Lord Jesus Christ, walk through our Country Zimbabwe and take away all our worries, economic hardships, political unrest and illnesses. Please also bless the households of the individuals included in this e-mail and the person who has sent it out. Amen" ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++ SAD SERIES Meppy is a mother, she has a baby on her back, I see her every Thursday when she comes to rummage through our garbage bags. She is one of many who follow the dumptruck roster. Suburbs on Thursdays, Kumalo on Fridays, Burnside of Mondays..... There are few affluent suburbs left now in Bulawayo, most households throw very little of any use away, times are too hard, inflation running at 1700% and unemployment at 80%... not much hope for Meppy and her baby........ ...
