I’m in a spin! Today is the morning after the last evening - the final performance - of the 5th Bulawayo Music Festival and I’m on a high with the strains of Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals still going round in my head. It will take days to recover from the awesome experience of the past five days. It’s a curious feeling of fulfilment mixed with exhaustion from endeavours and determination not to miss anything! It was a strenuous, exciting, tremendous, exacting, stupendous, mind-boggling, not-to-be-missed five days. How can one possibly put into words the terrific impact that this wonderful happening has had on our lives? We have gone through so many emotions and pleasures in a way we could never have envisioned. An unbelievable, unprecedented and uniquely amazing period of time that I simply cannot find adjectives to fully describe! These last few days have been like none other and it’s hard to imagine 'Life after the Festival'. But we couldn’t go on like that anyway. All good things come to an end and we were getting near to utter exhaustion anyway! How the performers themselves kept going through five days of a rigorous and totally demanding, non-stop programme is a mystery. They were just super human. The energy and enthusiasm, quite apart from the technique and skill of producing this intense musical immersion, is staggering. And their magnetic personalities and constant good humour captivated the audience from beginning to end. It has left us all with such a beautifully warm feeling of well being and a tremendous appreciation of being in the right place at the right time! Michael Bullivant, appointed Director of the Academy of Music in January 2006, is the indefatigable driving force behind all this. In fact, the success of this fifth marvellous bi-annual event is due entirely to the relentless dedication that Michael devotes to music in Zimbabwe and we owe so much to this wonderful man! And how blessed we are to have such a feast of culture and enjoyment right here especially when almost everything around us is stressful and uncertain. It’s been like a shot in the arm to all those music lovers who attended, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more determined and indomitable lot of followers anywhere! Even the esteemed musicians themselves remarked on the enthusiasm and stamina of the Bulawayo audience, which incidentally was made up of visitors from all around Zimbabwe and even some from overseas. The entire festival was also a delightful social event where people became reacquainted with old friends and made many new ones. Incidentally, there were a number of fellow WIT members which, for me, added to the special camaraderie. At the same time the visiting performers - Leslie Howard (pianist from Down Under); Benjamin Nabarro (British violinist) and his wife, Russian-born Ania Safonova (viola) and Matthew Sharp (British cellist and baritone) along with our local homegrown talent (of whom there were so many), mingled freely with the public so that by the end of the five days we felt we knew them all fairly well - quite unlike artists in other countries who are generally admired and appreciated 'at a distance'! The warmth and friendliness of people in Bulawayo does not allow for this and our visitors are instantly and completely at home - to the benefit of everyone concerned. I mean, where else would you rub shoulders with famous musicians and actually observe them pitching in doing 'menial' jobs like moving chairs from one area of the Academy to another and shifting pianos across stage! And what talent was on show for us! The choirs, soloists and conductors, the orchestral players and the world-class visiting performers who all charmed us with their marvellous music and endearing personalities. To try to describe the emotions and passion of their music - not to mention the skill and mental and physical hard work of them all is beyond my capabilities. I prefer to leave that to the experts but I think it’s safe to say that all of us in the audience were completely enthralled from start to finish - from the opening Rachmaninov on Wednesday to the brilliant orchestral concert on Sunday evening - and the memorable grand finale with Martin Sharp’s fine rendition of Flanders and Swan’s Hippopotamus Song (so appropriate to this country and a favourite, fun feature at our festivals) with the audience joining in the chorus of 'Mud, Glorious Mud'. Better than the last night of the Proms! Wow! What a privilege and what a Festival! PS: So here’s looking towards 2008. In the meantime, however, serious athletic pre- festival training is recommended!) In January this year our phone line was disconnected for one day for 'non-payment' - because we had not yet received a bill, were away, and had not paid by two days after the due date. In February we received a bill for over $35,000,000.00 (thirty five million dollars) against our normal bills of about $500,000 - we had apparently used over 22,000 units, against a normal usage of about three hundred. I made several visits to TelOne and eventually paid for a print-out, which showed that on a night either just before or just after our line had been disconnected, calls had been made more or less end to end to countries such as Sao Tome and Principe, Estonia and Austria. We knew that we had not made these calls and, suspecting that our line had been tapped into during the time it was apparently disconnected, asked for an investigation. This took four months, during which time we were charged interest at 20% per month. Eventually TelOne contacted us and asked for a meeting at their offices. What they told us was quite frightening. We had logged onto our normal ISP, but had received a strange icon on screen. We had had this happen once before and this time did not switch off the computer because previously it had messed up our software. Unfortunately we did not disconnect the phone line. What happened was this - the icon was connected to a type of virus - someone had hacked into our computer and whilst we slept had used it to dial calls from these countries against our phone account. Apparently this, whilst not being common, is something that has happened before. TelOne checked all the numbers dialled and found that in most cases the users had "moved on" and the lines were no longer in use. It is a very clever scam, unfortunately as far as TelOne are concerned it is akin to allowing someone else access to your property and them running up a phone bill which you are then responsible for. In our case it meant that we were left, after four months worth of interest charges were added, with a bill of over $74,000,000.00 (yes, seventy four million dollars) to pay - which TelOne said we could pay over three months with interest. I guess this leaves us with one very clear message - ALWAYS unplug your phone line from your computer when you are not using it, ESPECIALLY when you leave the computer switched on, and EVEN when there is no threat of lightning. It's a very expensive lesson to have to learn." ++++++ THANK YOU SO MCH THANK YOU SO MUCH TO SO MANY PEOPLE FOR HELPING US TO CARE FOR THE ELDERLY IN BULAWAYO AMONG THESE GUARDIAN ANGELS THIS WEEK are EUGENE HALSTED MAHESH VAGHMARIA MIKE BOWLER DAVE ANTHONY JOHN PRITCHARD JOHN BANNISTER ++++++++ Girls’ College wishes to thank all those who helped make our recent Fund-raising Golf Day a success. We have had a very successful term so far in all sporting disciplines. Hockey Girls’ College has done exceedingly well so far this term in our hockey, with our U16 and Senior girls being unbeaten in all 7 games so far played, against Byo and Harare Convent, Lomagundi, Arundel, Kyle College, Gateway and Hatfield. U14 and U15 teams have not been quite so successful but have by no means disgraced themselves. The U14’s have Lost 2 Drawn 3 and Won 2. The U 15’s have Lost 3 and Won 4. 15 of our girls have been chosen to represent Matabeleland for U16 hockey which travels to Harare this weekend. 16 of our U18 have been chosen to represent Matabeleland for the Inter-Provincial Tournament which our College will be hosting on 30th June. Netball Girls’ College hosted the Zone 7E Netball Tournament on 9 June and won the U16 and U 20 trophies. We were runners-up in U14 age group. Our teams captained by Lorraine Sibanda will be going to the Inter Zonal Tournament on Friday 23 June. Basketball There have been many injuries this term so our results are not as high as we would like. The U20 girls travelled to Harare and won 1 game out of 3. All our tams continue to play local schools, however Convent remain our greatest rivals. Tennis Off season coaching carries on with the Melbury girls engaged in playoffs. Squash Mr Gwidzima of Suburbs coaches our girls and this is proving very beneficial. The trip to Kyle College was cancelled due to transport constraints. Cross Country- Interhouse The Inter-House Cross-Country will be held on Thursday 13 July with 10 girls from each house running in each age group. Show-Jumping Congratulations are due to both Amy Wawn and Heather Watson who did very well in the Rand Easter Show-Jumping Festival. Heather was the top qualifier in the championships and won the Victrix Ludorum. At the Trade Fair in Bulawayo, Heather was second in the Zimbabwe First Team and achieved the Allstar Trophy, while Amy was second in the National Open Championships. We are very proud of our young horsewomen. Solo-Latin Dancing. The Zimbabwean Team had a landslide victory against South Africa in their recent competition. Hailey Edy won one gold medal for Latin and another for energy, hip hop etc. Amanda Nixon was awarded a Silver medal for Latin and a Bronze medal for Hip Hop. Stacey Marsh also made it though to the finals. Congratulations to our girls. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES CHOIR Our girls and Mrs Smith have been very busy this term , especially the form IV and the College choirs who gave excellent performances at the recent Bulawayo Music Festival. Azaliah Mapombere and Rhudo Tshuma were our distinguished percussionists in the final concert of the festival under the baton of international conductor Leslie Howard. The orchestra played at the Flower Festival on Africa Day at the Church of the Ascension, Hillside and Azaliah Mapombere, Lara Marillier, Rhudo Tshuma, Jenna Beyleveld, Christine de Beer, Amy Wawn, Katharine Randell, Polly Randell, Hayleigh Madangure, Herfa Thompson, Katherine Thomson, Kimberly Morrow and Bridget White played most commendably on the day with the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra. The Girls’ College jazz band was commissioned to play at a prestigious book launch held at the art gallery. The girls in the band included Azaliah Mapombere, Lara Marillier, Jenna Beyleveld and Christine de Beer. A special thanks to Mrs S. Smith for all her hard work and commitment to the music life of the College. Debating Society. This is still going strong. The Junior debaters achieved 2nd place in the Nugget League competition. The prominent junior debaters are Shamiso Khupe, Wilma Chibonore, Khanyelihle Moyo and Chido Tendai. A senior debater and public speaker of note is Mzwanele Mlilo who won a prize as best speaker in her category. Girls` College Literary Competition It was most pleasing that so many of our own students received Honours awards this year, namely: Shelly Gray, Jamie Neilson, Demi Filannino, Christine Spencer (who also received a trophy for the most promising writer in her age group), Fadzai Mushoriwa , Amy Wawn , Megan Grobler, Neha Naik , Ruvarashe Gumbo , Christine de Beer, Danielle da Silva, Jessica Greaves, Tanya Hunt and Kundai Chaka. Drama This remains very popular with the girls . The junior group has expanded to two instead of just one. The Sixth Form drama club are currently working on a production to be presented at the end of this term.. . not to be missed! Interact. This term we are privileged to have hard working organized and visionary young leaders in Julianne Jones and Chido Mpemba. They have assisted with others in the club in street collections for the Samaritans, Zimbabwe Union of University women, Ekuphumeleni Old Age Home and Island Hospice. The $80million that was raised last term mainly from the dance has been invested and is more than $100 million at the time of writing. Amnesty International This club has continued to be active and now includes junior members of the College. This group has been involved in 'urgent actions’ where the most recent one has culminated in the release of a three year old to her parents. Due to the high cost of postage in the country, `urgent actions ` are sent by e-mail COMMUNITY The girls raised well over $32 million for the recent Island Hospice Takkie Day, and brought in a lot of items for the 'Keep Bulawayo Warm' appeal for the less fortunate. ++++++ VERY USEFUL TIPS WORTH NOTING 1. Emergency number: The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even while the keypad is locked. Try it out . 2. Locked the keys in the car? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, call someone on your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away and if you can reach someone who has the other remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: *It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!" 3. Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger". Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, key is *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and your instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time. ++++++++ MORE TANGIBLE WEALTH !!
