PAYING IT FORWARD

I met a couple of folk on a trip with my daughter 14 years ago in Okavango, as we have shared so many things (including the Gifford School), we still remain great friends.
Michael - one of the folk, is a good 16 years older than me making him 80 ish but physically and mentally fit and always up for a challenge. He plays a bridge and is always busy.

Anyway, last night over supper, he told me that he and his Sister-In-Law went to Brookes at Zonke for lunch the other day. The server took their order and a tall 30 something guy, unknown to both of them, said hello, how are you two (old people) They chit chatted and that younger man went to order a takeaway and said goodbye once his order was ready.
After half an hour when Michael called for his bill, the server replied that their mela had been paid for by that younger man. They don't know who he is but please say thank you to this kind stranger.

Only in Bulawayo.

A WINTER'S DAY IN HWANGE

We did it!! We braved the dreaded Bulawayo/Victoria Falls Road and drove to Kapula South Camp in Hwange. It was a monumental drive, and with a short stop for Brekkie, it took us 8 hours to drive 420 kilometres...the road was horrendous, the potholes monumental, but - there is hope on the horizon. Reconstruction work has definitely commenced, great gaping detours are being carved out of the brush, and hopefully it won't take too long before its a glorious ride through the Mopani Forests, with those beautiful flowering Teaks overhanging the road, and a safe drive to Zimbabwe's prime tourist destinations once again.

But don't hold your breath!!

Even a pristine new road will not stop the cavalcade of coal trucks that thunder down the road in their hundreds daily, spewing black coal dust all down the roadsides and on the surrounding countryside. The black coat dust covered the roadside from Hwange until well past Insuza. The drive to Sinamatella Lodges is a disgrace with black dust enveloping the entire region, derelict plant and machinery festooning the landscape, plants struggling to breath, cess pools of sludge perilously close to totally smutty and disgraceful roads, edging right up to our precious National Park.

The road through the park from Main Camp to Kapula was almost totally devoid of tar and badly corrugated to boot, there had been quite a lot of work done on many of the platforms at various pans, thanks to safari operators and foreign aid, and of course National Parks, but we were saddened to see a pan right on the road, that had a sign saying 'No Access - Private property ' surely the general public should be able to park on a pan right on the road and view the game

But on the positive side, there is hope. Friends of Hwange Trust together with National Parks, the Bhejane Trust and the Conservation and Wildlife Fund, amongst others, have done an absolutely amazing job of providing solar pumps and a variety of essential works, to an incredible number of pans, bringing life- giving water to countless animals.

The grass is still high in many places even after several years of drought, and golden flecks shimmer through as we lazily drive from the watering hole back to our breakfast cooking at the campsite, the copper colours of the Mopane shrub shine brilliantly in the warm winter sun and time effortlessly slips away with a glorious winters day in Hwange.

Des Van Jaarsveldt

Des van Jaarsveldt passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 96. In the world of rugby, where history is often written in sweat, scars, and stadium cheers, his name carries a special kind of weight, a name not just remembered for stats or trophies, but for what it dared to represent in a complicated time. Born in 1929 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Desmond Charles van Jaarsveldt wasn't the kind of player bred by South Africa's rugby elite. He wasn't raised in the shadow of Newlands or under the bright lights of Ellis Park. Instead, he honed his talent in the dry heat and underdog spirit of Rhodesian rugby. From the outset, he wasn't just playing the game, he was challenging its boundaries.

At just 18, van Jaarsveldt made his Currie Cup debut against Northern Transvaal, scoring all of his team's points in a display of raw determination. Over the next 15 years, he became a cornerstone of Rhodesian rugby, representing his province 62 times. Originally a wing, he later moved into the loose forward position, a testament to both his physical evolution and his tactical mind. But it wasn't just about the number of matches played, it was about the way he played them, fearless, thoughtful, and full of conviction.

In 1960, van Jaarsveldt's name entered the history books when he was selected not only to play for the Springboks but to captain them, an extraordinary appointment, considering he had never played a Test match before. His first cap was also his last, but it came with the rare honour of leading the national team against Scotland in Port Elizabeth. South Africa won 18-10, and van Jaarsveldt even scored a try. But behind the victory lay a deeper, more complex narrative.

Des van Jaarsveldt's selection as captain was a controversial decision at the time. In a rugby environment dominated by Afrikaner culture and language, having a Rhodesian English-speaker at the helm unsettled many. He was not fluent in Afrikaans, and he delivered his team talks in English. Some players and administrators grumbled, uncomfortable with a captain who didn't follow every cultural convention. He even chose to forgo the customary captain's prayer, a small act, but one that marked him as someone unwilling to conform for conformity's sake.

Those decisions, some suspect, cost him any future Springbok selections. It's easy to believe that his limited appearances had more to do with politics than performance. But van Jaarsveldt was never bitter about it. He knew what he represented, the possibility of a broader, more inclusive Springbok identity. He showed that rugby could look beyond language and birthplace and see leadership in courage and clarity.

After his playing days, van Jaarsveldt didn't drift away from the game. Instead, he became a coach, leading Rhodesia's provincial team between 1967 and 1970. Later, he served as the president of the Rhodesian Rugby Union during a period of immense political upheaval, as Rhodesia transitioned into Zimbabwe. His steady hand and deep knowledge of the sport helped guide rugby through those uncertain years. He wasn't just a player or a coach, he was a custodian of the game.

Even decades after his retirement, van Jaarsveldt remained part of the rugby conversation. He was a frequent guest at Springbok events and in 2013, added his handprint to the South African Rugby Museum, solidifying his place among legends. His memory was not tied to a jersey count or medal haul but to a quiet kind of integrity that left its mark on everyone who heard his story.
When news of his death broke, tributes poured in from across the rugby world. SA Rugby president Mark Alexander described him as 'a leader with a deep love for the game who leaves behind a wonderful legacy.' The South African Rugby Legends Association echoed that sentiment, pointing out how few can say they wore the Springbok jersey only once, but did so as captain.

Des van Jaarsveldt's life and career stand as a challenge to the rigid structures that once defined South African rugby. He was a man out of place, and yet, precisely where he needed to be. At a time when the national team was a reflection of political lines and cultural expectations, he proved that leadership doesn't need to speak a certain language or come from a specific province. It needs only to speak the truth, carry the team, and leave everything on the field.
Des van Jaarsveldt's legacy is not one of numbers, but of meaning. In the end, that's the rarest kind of victory.

Obituary: Clive Oxden-Willows
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Clive Oxden-Willows, who died peacefully on Wednesday 23rd July 2025 at the age of 76

Clive was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, loyal friend, and respected leader. A man of immense strength, humour, and integrity, he touched the lives of so many - not only within his family circle, but across the wider community and business landscape of Bulawayo.

He was a proud and passionate pillar of the Bulawayo community, deeply committed to the city's growth, resilience, and spirit. Clive was a tireless fighter for local manufacturing and business, advocating fiercely for fair policies, strong local industry, and the rights of small and medium enterprises. His voice was loud and unwavering in meetings, on committees, and in quiet conversations - always pushing for what was right, and what would serve future generations.

Outside of boardrooms and community forums, Clive found his greatest peace in the bush, particularly while fishing - his lifelong passion. His heart belonged to the natural rhythms of the land and water, especially at the Olive Beadle camp, where he could cast a line and simply be.

Above all, Clive was a man of family. He was not only a father and grandfather, but a steadfast father-figure to many - a guide, a protector, a source of unwavering support. He lived with integrity, fought for fairness, and loved without limits.

Clive leaves behind a legacy of service, strength, and sincerity. He will be remembered not just for what he did, but for how he made people feel - heard, supported, and empowered.

A memorial service to celebrate Clive's life will be held on Friday 1st August at Mystique at 2.30pm. More details to follow. All who knew and loved him are warmly invited to attend and pay tribute to a life lived fully and fearlessly.

Riley Mirtle and 9 others.

THURSDAY 7 AUGUST AT 6.30 P.M. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released fifty years ago on 14 August 1975 when its initial reception was extremely negative; it soon became a hit and, fifty years on, is still on limited release, the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film was a tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the 1960s and the story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, where they search for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes holding a party. They then meet the head of the house, Dr.Frank-N-Furter, an apparently mad scientist and alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky.
A string of hummable songs gives it momentum, Charles Gray's admirably straight-faced narrator holds it together, and a run on black lingerie takes care of almost everything else. [Time Out]
Love it or hate it, this is a trip you're likely never going to forget. [Apollo Guide]
For the most part it moves spiritedly along and the whole thing is a giant giggle. It's all so blatantly outrageous it can only be taken in the spirit of campy fun; this is one time a stage production has been enhanced by the film version. [Bay Area Reporter]
It's cheerful and silly, and kind of sweet.. [Chicago Sun-Times]
Admission: $3.00
