Contact Sam on 0772999343 ++++ Great Zimbabwe Visit Visitors to Great Zimbabwe take precautions!! This weekend special Zimbo friends of ours paid a glorious visit to Great Zimbabwe en route to Chimanimani. They had been told that the shopping in Chimanimani was 'limited' so they had done the their holiday provision shopping in Bulawayo. It was their first time to see our country's most spiritual monument but sadly their pilgrimage was disrupted by a troop of monkeys. Parking right next to National Parks office, Trymore went inside to register, leaving his wife in the car. An entire troop of wicked monkeys instantly invaded the car through the open windows. Poor Sylvia was terrified, she tried to shoo the monkeys away but they were unperturbed and instantly stated to ravage the provisions on the back seat. Sylvia was unable to scream she was so traumatised so she rushed inside to call for help. By the time help arrived those little demons had ripped open everything they could find, meat, rice, flour, beans, vegetable and fruit, scattering their bounty far and wide as Trymore and the National Parks folk arrived. Very little was salvageable and it was indeed a sad way to start what turned out to be an unbelievable holiday and trip around Zimbabwe!! ++++ Editorial HeeHoo and I always play a speculative game when boarding a long haul flight. WHO will we get sitting next to us I once had a three ton Bishop, unfold next to me, still in his voluminous purple robes, HeeHoo dreads the three ton rastafarian who kicks off his shoes and picks his toenails!! We travelled separately recently and HeeHoo was playing the guessing game with me via WhatsApp, watching each traveller as they moved down the aisle towards him, sometimes in fear and trepidation. He just could not believe his luck this time when a young pretty blond gal, sporting numerous tattoos, a closely cropped almost shaven but stylish hairdo, and piercings in every possible location, wearing a scanty little outfit, came to stop in front of him indicating the seat next to him!! I can just visualise him gallantly lifting her cabin luggage up for her and sweeping away his own belongings onto the floor with a flourish!! HeeHoo must have been slightly miffed when she dragged an enormous red and white crocheted blanket from her hand luggage and wrapped her scantily clad frame in it, proudly extolling the fact that her 'Gran' had made it for her!! It transpires, as he wrote copious whatsapps to me, that she was none other than Lacey Jones, the famous contestant in the reality TV series 'Naked and Afraid'!! Now reality TV followers would know well that a couple of total strangers, stark staring naked, are dropped off on a desert island and told to fend for themselves for several weeks... I personally have not had the dubious pleasure of watching this series but no doubt, for posterity, I probably will have to watch Miss Jones at some point!! Whatsapps with wifey came to an abrupt end once HeeHoo worked his charms on Miss Jones, but I must say I was secretly glad that he had someone of a small frame sitting next to his giant shoulders, even if she did snore gently on his arm for a good part of the long haul flight!! ++++ 2) CONDOLENCES AND IN MEMORIAM Brian Viljoen It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Brian Viljoen (Gg, Vellies, Jock) affectionately known as Grandpa to all who knew him, was a steadfast cricket supporter always at the games giving a chirp here or there but loved by all alike. Gg loved the outdoors was a keen fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed going to Main Camp. In his later years the ponds by the Airport was his favorite place. Thanks for always been there for Dale, Lauren, Matt. Love and condolences to Ma (Shirley), Kerry, Kim, Tammy, Wayne and all the family. Fly high Vellies, till we meet again. ++++ Jeremy Railton So sad, the brilliant Jeremy Railton has died at his home Three Rivers, which looked so much like his home farm in Khami. He had a long and successful life as a designer of sets for stage and screen, and for famous performers. If you want to see more of his life and work have a read of 'Unlikely Beginnings'. I met him at the Gilbert & Sullivan and sports weekend at Plumtree School. He showed me the scenery he had designed for the annual play. We both went to Michaelis Art School in Cape Town, but I lost track of him then. He went to London, and met Cecil Beaton, who took him to California to design the sets for My Fair Lady. He won Oscars and Baftas for his work, and retired to the mountains when he bought his lovely wild property. His parents were killed at their farm in 1982. Liz Davies ++++ David Rushworth For all you Zimbos that knew David Rushworth, he passed away recently. I and you that knew this absolutely incredibly Man, Dave will always be missed. And if you did not Know him, you've missed a fortune of wildlife knowledge. Colin Welensky ++++ Condolences Maureen Mason or Mo as she was known We are sorry to let you know that our dear Mother, Maureen Mason, has passed away and gone to join Dad and all her relatives that went on before her. We will miss her laugh and her wonderful sense of humour. And it was her dogged determination to live life that has brought her through to her 94th year. She loved people and gathered friends where ever she went. She will be sadly missed by us all. She has left behind such valuable life lessons. Mom fully embodied what it means to be a gregarious person. To be sociable, polite and enjoy the company of others. To actively seek out and enjoy social situations and to interact with anyone who comes across your path on a daily basis. It costs you nothing, and it takes you much further in life. "Friendship is a gift you give yourself" and along her journey she made true life long friendships. And became loved by many. Being loved by others is more precious than silver or gold. Fly high Mom. Your work on earth is done but your legacy lives on. You will be greatly missed by all those whose lives you touched. Love Sue, Pam and Roger suedurand00@gmail.com ++++ Trevor Charsley passed away in Byo on 28th June. Deepest sympathy to Fran and Ingrid and Claire and Kirsten. THE PALLISERS: SERIES 1 The Pallisers is a 1974 BBC television adaptation of Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels. Set in Victorian England with a backdrop of parliamentary life, it featured a large cast of both prominent and rising actors and remains one of the most ambitious TV adaptations ever undertaken. Simon Raven brings a droll sense of humour to the scripts which cover six novels spanning twenty years and took thirteen months to film. The result is a true epic, a sweeping saga of political intrigue, love affairs, financial wrangles, theft and murder,. The series will be shown in four segments over the year and begins as the Duke of Omnium holds a garden party, unaware that forces are at work which will have drastic implications on the lives of a number of his guests including that of his nephew and heir, Plantagenet Palliser((Philip Latham)., and Lady Glencora McCluskie (Susan Hampshire) who are forced into an arranged marriage. Fabulous. They really don't make them like this any more and the series has stood the test of time very well indeed, probably because they did it all well to begin with - the costumes all authentic and hand made, no zippers here! What a delight. [IMDb] If you enjoy period dramas, then you should love this. Highly recommended! [Amazon] It stands as a fine example of the BBC at the height of its costume drama period. [Television Heaven] Forty years on, this jewel from the heyday of British TV drama continues to be compelling viewing and puts most of what we now see on television to shame. [French Films.org.] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] SATURDAY 26 JULY AT 4.00 P.M. THE PHOENIX CHOIR The Phoenix Choir returns with another edition of 'Those Were the Days' featuring music from the 1940s to the 1970s. Snacks will be available after the performance at $4.00 per head but should be ordered in advance on 077 400 4449. Admission: $5.00 FRIDAY 1 AUGUST AT 5.30 P.M. A RIVERDALE ACADEMY NIGHT OF MUSIC The evening features Riverdale choirs, dance and drama group and the music band as well as choirs from Kyle College, St.Augustine's College and the Dominican Convent plus Family Voices and Serene music. Tickets available at Riverdale School Office and the Hillside Bridge Club. THURSDAY 7 AUGUST AT 6.30 P.M. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released fifty years ago on 14 August 1975 when its initial reception was extremely negative; it soon became a hit and, fifty years on, is still on limited release, the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film was a tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the 1960s and the story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, where they search for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes holding a party. They then meet the head of the house, Dr.Frank-N-Furter, an apparently mad scientist and alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky. A string of hummable songs gives it momentum, Charles Gray's admirably straight-faced narrator holds it together, and a run on black lingerie takes care of almost everything else. [Time Out] Love it or hate it, this is a trip you're likely never going to forget. [Apollo Guide] For the most part it moves spiritedly along and the whole thing is a giant giggle. It's all so blatantly outrageous it can only be taken in the spirit of campy fun; this is one time a stage production has been enhanced by the film version. [Bay Area Reporter] It's cheerful and silly, and kind of sweet.. Before a question is answered there are possibilities for multiple answers and this exhibition examines each one through the lens of a teenage boy learning to become a man. Therefore Coming of Age is a big theme and within it are themes such as trauma and healing, love and heartbreak and freedom and addiction. Within such themes this is almost like a series of diary entries that the viewer is invited into. Artist Statement "As an 18-year-old Zimbabwean artist, I create to explore and celebrate the essence of who I am and what makes up my identity in all its dualities-the strength and vulnerability, tradition and modernity, unity and individuality.
