THE PALLISERS: SERIES 1 The Pallisers is a 1974 BBC television adaptation of Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels. Set in Victorian England with a backdrop of parliamentary life, it featured a large cast of both prominent and rising actors and remains one of the most ambitious TV adaptations ever undertaken. Simon Raven brings a droll sense of humour to the scripts which cover six novels spanning twenty years and took thirteen months to film. The result is a true epic, a sweeping saga of political intrigue, love affairs, financial wrangles, theft and murder,. The series will be shown in four segments over the year and begins as the Duke of Omnium holds a garden party, unaware that forces are at work which will have drastic implications on the lives of a number of his guests including that of his nephew and heir, Plantagenet Palliser((Philip Latham)., and Lady Glencora McCluskie (Susan Hampshire) who are forced into an arranged marriage. Fabulous. They really don't make them like this any more and the series has stood the test of time very well indeed, probably because they did it all well to begin with - the costumes all authentic and hand made, no zippers here! What a delight. [IMDb] If you enjoy period dramas, then you should love this. Highly recommended! [Amazon] It stands as a fine example of the BBC at the height of its costume drama period. [Television Heaven] Forty years on, this jewel from the heyday of British TV drama continues to be compelling viewing and puts most of what we now see on television to shame. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released fifty years ago on 14 August 1975 when its initial reception was extremely negative; it soon became a hit and, fifty years on, is still on limited release, the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film was a tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the 1960s and the story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, where they search for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes holding a party. They then meet the head of the house, Dr.Frank-N-Furter, an apparently mad scientist and alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky. A string of hummable songs gives it momentum, Charles Gray's admirably straight-faced narrator holds it together, and a run on black lingerie takes care of almost everything else. [Time Out] Love it or hate it, this is a trip you're likely never going to forget. [Apollo Guide] For the most part it moves spiritedly along and the whole thing is a giant giggle. It's all so blatantly outrageous it can only be taken in the spirit of campy fun; this is one time a stage production has been enhanced by the film version. Therefore Coming of Age is a big theme and within it are themes such as trauma and healing, love and heartbreak and freedom and addiction. Within such themes this is almost like a series of diary entries that the viewer is invited into. Artist Statement "As an 18-year-old Zimbabwean artist, I create to explore and celebrate the essence of who I am and what makes up my identity in all its dualities-the strength and vulnerability, tradition and modernity, unity and individuality.
