Iganyana Art and Craft Centre

We are kindly requesting on behalf of women in our community from willing member for the donation of potatoes and oranges empty bags. People after using the contents they tend to throw away the empty bags as garbage. Our community women have identified a way to re-use and recycle these bags making stylish carry bags. While recycling, the project also creates employment for local women by making embroidered plastic bags, clutch bags, beach bags, toiletry bags, table mats, etc.

We really appreciate your efforts and trust that you can read and perhaps can pass it along to the members who wish to contribute for this good cause, anything that goes along to make the project a success will be greatly appreciated even scraps of fabric for the inside lining, button zippers, fasteners.

I CRIED BEACUSE..

I remember clearly being 16 and wanting a pair of tartan stockings so desperately, that I could hardly breathe!!

They were to go under a red dress Mom had made me for the Friday social at St Mary's Church in Famona. Fashion at age 16 was paramount, and Mum, as were all the folk after the war, was 'as poor as a church mouse!!'

Mum's favourite saying, whenever we wanted something was, and I quote 'I cried because I had no shoes..and then I saw one who had no feet'....

Somehow even that saying did not mollify my longing for red tartan stockings but
my Grandmother saved my life literally, and gave me the required Five Pounds to buy said stockings! Thanks to her, I survived the Social at St Marys Church!!

My needs are few as HeeHoo looks after me with every fibre of his being, but Mum's quotation creeps into my head frequently.

Funny - my most inconsequential and ridiculous need today was for small change!! Yes, the money sort... Zimbabwe does just not have any small change, where is it all I beg someone to tell me

Change at the stores is offered in lollipops, Fredo Frog chocolates, apples, or cup cakes with pink icing! Digging around for change occupies half of the population's precious time!!

I had to drive into a petrol station today, ask the attendant for ten dollars diesel, and after presenting him with a crisp new $100 bill, I skulked off with my ill-gotten gains of 4 x $20.00 notes and a ten dollar note. No such thing as single dollars! Good gracious no! Last week I had to buy some airtime from a vendor to get change!!

As I said, Mum's sad saying comes to mind daily. Our country is in horribly dire straits, many of our countrymen are literally destitute. Seeing the valiant folk sitting on the muddy verges, cardboard boxes serving as their tables, selling their single sweets, single cigarettes and packets of maputi, makes my heart ache.

'I cried because I had no shoes..and then I saw one who had no feet'....

'Cry the Beloved Country'

THURSDAY 10 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. QUARTET
In the last of the series of films celebrating Dame Maggie Smith, once-popular opera diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) creates a stir with her arrival at Beecham House, a home for retired performers. No one feels the uproar more than Reginald (Tom Courtenay), Jean's ex-husband, who still stings from her long-ago infidelity. Most of the other Beecham residents are delighted, and try to convince Jean to join them in a performance of 'Rigoletto.' Jean, however, knows that she is long past her prime and is reluctant to sully the memory of her once-lovely voice.
- Let us praise simple things, especially when they are done as well as this. [London Evening Standard]
- A charming, beautifully acted character comedy that proves you're never too old to say 'never'. [Daily Express]
- There is nothing startling or challenging about Quartet, but it's a delightful film that touches on themes of ageing and the enduring importance of art. [Radio Times]
- It's an accomplished film that draws strong performances from very fine actors. [Daily Mail]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 11 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. VERDI: RIGOLETTO
Verdi's Rigoletto is, of course, the opera that features in Quartet so it seems sensible to show it the following evening! The opera was based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse and in a letter to his librettist, Piave, the composer describes it as 'the greatest drama of modern times'. He saw the character of Rigoletto as one worthy of Shakespeare, and from Verdi there was no greater compliment.
The traditional production comes from the Met and features Placido Domingo, Ileana Cotrubas and Cornell MacNeil in an outstanding performance which was highly enthusiastically received.
- What can I say This is a five- star de luxe production! [Amazon]
- Few have ever sung a more moving denunciation of the courtiers [than Cornell McNeill] or a better Vengeance Duet with Gilda. His was a great Verdian interpretation. [New York Post]
- This is a very good production. The costumes and sets are absolutely lovely, the video directing is interesting. The soloists are outstanding and the orchestra are precise and clearly very passionate, likewise with the conducting of James Levine. [IMDb]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

WEDNESDAY 30 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY: TICH MAKALISA AND FRIENDS
ZaRae, a popular Bulawayo-based guitarist/vocalist, will be performing folk music before the interval. Tich Makalisa will be joined by Sisonke Xonti, an outstanding South African saxophonist to perform jazz standards as well as original material.
Admission: $5.00 - no pre-booking [free to Red Carpet members]

THEREAFTER
- Thursday 8 May The Man with the Golden Gun [James Bond 9]
- Friday 9 May Alice in Wonderland - Royal Ballet
- Thursday 15 May Gladiator [released 4 May 2000]

19) Seeking Friends

This may be the biggest long shot but I am trying to trace a family that lived in Rhodesia back in the 1940-1964 period by the name of Ambrose. I wondered if there is someone in your collective that is into Geneology /family history in Rhodesia that might be able to help

Specifically, I am trying to 'rediscover' a Peter Ambrose born c. 1945 in Rhodesia who left for the UK around 1964 with his sister, mother and I believe his father. I have no first names for them!

Peter came to work at a company called Atlas Copco (a mining equipment supplier) in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK. We were workmates and socialised together for 12months in 1967, until Peter moved away..and we all lost touch.

Now his mates are all in our 80s and we often wonder what happened to Peter. Did he go home, did he stay in the Uk..is he still alive !

I've taken it on myself to see if I can find out anything about Peters past like his sisters name, any marriages that might produce children who might be able to tell us more of Peters movements after 1968. By getting knowledge of his past family history it's hoped we might uncover connections and clues as to what happened to him later.

Someone did some research that showed the daughter of a Martin Nix Ambrose married a James Edward McHugh. The family tree also showed a son for Martin Nix Ambrose as well..but neither child was named, so cannot say if the Peter we knew was a son of Martin Nix Ambrose.

So I am hoping there may be someone 'out there' that has bits of information, who is interested and willing to communicate with me

Can you help, please

Many thanks
Eric Field (Norfolk UK)
