The Bulawayo Chronicle

How I miss the good old Bulawayo Chronicle, delivered daily to the front door!!
One had to pay extra for the Sunday Times, but what a treat when that arrived. Especially in winter when the family would tuck up in a sunny corner and 'divide the spoils'!!

Our daily newspaper had a particularly endearing quality, from the times of UDI in the sixties, they had to manufacture the paper using recycling, (as they did the loo paper). My Mum, bless her cotton socks, used to use Wish toilet paper, and as she said in her most ladylike way 'Its called Wish because I wish my fingers didn't go through it!!) Naughty, naughty but I am sure you get my gist

How on earth does anyone manage without a daily newspaper, especially of the quality that we all became used

It was so absorbent, after all, how on earth could one mop up the new puppy's piddle with a glossy Spectator Magazine

Newspaper is always in short supply in Africa, used to light a fire, used to cover seedbeds, used to hold in front the fireplace to cause a draught! Used to wrap cups and saucers when moving house, used to swat the flies, swat the dog when he scratched! (Often used as loo paper too!!)

The newspaper was delivered promptly by a happy fellow on a bicycle, at 6 am every morning, we could hear the plop as it was tossed through the gate onto the brickwork,
and there was always a rush to get to it.

The Owner of the House was rushing because he wanted to collect it before it was purloined by the Homeless Fellow who lived by the Matsheumhlope River. He would pass by every day with a long stick and try and hook it through the bars of the gate, before we got to it.

I am sure his need was greater than ours so Granny took to visiting him every Sunday with a sandwich and a bottle of tea!

Granny loved the crossword section, HeeHoo loved current affairs and the sports section. I liked the Letters to the Editor, who went by the nom-de-plume of the 'Chiel', and also at one stage 'Cabbages and Kings'.

I remember hating him personally, (I think it was Martin Lee at the time), as he scolded me one day in print, by calling me 'that infuriating talkative scorer' when I did the scoring on a TV programme hosted by Ken Jackson!!

Not quite the same these days scrolling through the news on X!!

2) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds

Graham (Grumpy) Booth

The Bulawayo community is very sad to announce the death of Grumpy Booth dearest husband of Alison.

Zimbabwe has lost a legend!
Geoffrey Nyarota (1951 - 23 March 2025) was a Zimbabwean journalist and human rights activist. Born in colonial Southern Rhodesia, he trained as a teacher before beginning his career with a Zimbabwean state-owned newspaper, The Herald and then as editor of the state-owned Bulawayo Chronicle.

When Nyarota was subsequently removed from his post, he spent several years teaching in exile before returning to open the independent Daily News. Bearing the motto "Telling it like it is", the Daily News swiftly became Zimbabwe's most popular newspaper. After being forced from the paper by new management in December 2002, Nyarota left Zimbabwe.
In exile in the United States, he began The Zimbabwe Times, an online newspaper. His memoir Against the Grain, Memoirs of a Zimbabwean Newsman was published in South Africa in 2006.

The passing of veteran journalist Geoff Nyarota is not just a loss to the journalism fraternity - it is a deep wound to the soul of a nation still crying out for accountability, justice, and integrity.

In a country where the media has too often become a lapdog instead of a watchdog, Nyarota stood as a rare beacon of fearless truth-telling.

Geoff Nyarota embodied what journalism ought to be - courageous, principled, and rooted in the pursuit of truth and justice.

His bravery set a benchmark, not just for his peers, but for future generations of journalists.

He reminded us that journalism is not merely about reporting events, but about shaping the destiny of a nation by holding power to account and giving voice to the voiceless.

GARRY AINSCOUGH

Much loved husband of Nicky and father of Dylan. Brother of Malcolm.

Rohan James Cooper (born 19.3.1981) a Bulawayo lad who liked the outdoors, visiting Matopos and marathon-triathlon competitions, passed away suddenly in a woodland in Stadhampton, Oxford, UK on 31.10.24 aged 43 years. In Bulawayo he worked in TV repairs and in Britain as a plumber. He liked visiting museums, art galleries and other places in London with me. He appreciated my support in his sports day at school in Bulawayo. May he RIP. From his step-brother Dr. Ross G. Cooper

4) Notices and Events

ZIMBABWE ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Tel: 2260684 / 2267195 E-mail: music@gatorzw.co.uk

The fifth of April marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Robert Sibson Hall and the final stage in the momentous project to build the Zimbabwe Academy of Music. The construction of the north wing had begun in 1952 and the foundation stone was dedicated on 30 June 1953 though in fact that part of the building was by then complete. The south wing followed ten years later and Robert Sibson's vision was finally realised in 1974-75 when the two wings were united by the central block and the hall which was named after him.
We are marking the event with a special concert but for various reasons the celebration has had to be postponed and will take place on Saturday 17, repeated on Sunday 18 May. Please make a note of the dates now - and raise a glass to Robert Sibson and the Academy on 5 April!

THURSDAY 27 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE
Released thirty years ago on 24 March 1995, The Madness of King George relates a dark episode in the king's reign. Bothered by increasingly painful abdominal pains, George (Nigel Hawthorne) begins to act irrationally and belligerently. The doctors - mostly a bunch of jumped-up quacks - do nothing for him. His eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales (Rupert Everett) is eager to see his father declared mad so he can take over as regent. Ministers, retainers and others at court begin to scheme how to get the most out of the king's indisposition whilst Prime Minister Pitt (Julian Wadham) and Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren), are desperate to help the King..
- One of the triumphs of the year-potent, engrossing and even thrilling. [Los Angeles Times]
- A deft, mischievous, beautifully acted historical drama with exceptionally broad appeal. [New York Times]
- A model of historical accuracy and psychological tact. A triumph. [The Guardian]
- One of the unlikeliest but most likable movies of the 1990s. [Reel Views]
- Flawless acting. Hawthorne was robbed of an Oscar. Sorry, but it's true. [Widgett Walls]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 28 MARCH AT 6.30 P.M. GILBERT & SULLIVAN: TRIAL BY JURY / HMS PINAFORE
Trial by Jury was first performed a hundred and fifty years ago on 25 March 1875 and for most of the 20th century, the D'Oyly Carte Opera performed it as a companion piece to HMS Pinafore, the shortest of the full-length G&S operettas. Opera Australia re-unites these long-standing stage-mates with two fresh productions and an inspired cast. While HMS Pinafore was Gilbert and Sullivan's first major international success, Trial by Jury is their first surviving collaboration, and the show's outrageous antics made it the toast of London.
- Delightfully played with just the right balance of tongue-in-cheek humour. [Daily Telegraph]
- A luminous cast, impeccable orchestra and spirited direction. [The Age]
- 'Trial' is simply the best G&S production I have seen in my entire life for sheer energy and general amusement. Even the audience seemed to have talent. [IMDb]
- This is a snappy little HMS Pinafore that veritably romps along. [Arts Hub]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 3 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
In the first Python full-length film (released fifty years ago to the day!) King Arthur leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail and they face a wide array of horrors including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins and a handful of rude Frenchmen..
- A cult classic as gut-bustingly hilarious as it is blithely ridiculous, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has lost none of its exceedingly silly charm. [Rotten Tomatoes]
- This remains a wonderfully inventive comedy that brilliantly debunks the Dark Ages and legends of chivalry. [Radio Times]
- Maintains its comic punch right through to the end credits, and you almost want to turn back and watch it all over again. [Cinema Crazed]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

THURSDAY 10 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. QUARTET
In the last of the series of films celebrating Dame Maggie Smith, once-popular opera diva Jean Horton (Maggie Smith) creates a stir with her arrival at Beecham House, a home for retired performers. No one feels the uproar more than Reginald (Tom Courtenay), Jean's ex-husband, who still stings from her long-ago infidelity. Most of the other Beecham residents are delighted, and try to convince Jean to join them in a performance of 'Rigoletto.' She, however, knows that she is long past her prime and is reluctant to sully the memory of her once-lovely voice.
- Let us praise simple things, especially when they are done as well as this. [London Evening Standard]
- A charming, beautifully acted character comedy that proves you're never too old to say 'never'. [Daily Express]
- There is nothing startling or challenging about Quartet, but it's a delightful film that touches on themes of ageing and the enduring importance of art. [Radio Times]
- It's an accomplished film that draws strong performances from very fine actors. [Daily Mail]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 11 APRIL AT 6.30 P.M. VERDI: RIGOLETTO
Verdi's Rigoletto is, of course, the opera that features in Quartet so it seems reasonable to show it the following evening! The opera was based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse and in a letter to his librettist, Piave, the composer describes it as 'the greatest drama of modern times'. He saw the character of Rigoletto as one worthy of Shakespeare, and from Verdi there was no greater compliment. The traditional production comes from the Met and features Placido Domingo, Ileana Cotrubas and Cornell MacNeil in an outstanding performance which was extremely enthusiastically received.
- What can I say This is a five- star de luxe production! [Amazon]
- Few have ever sung a more moving denunciation of the courtiers [than Cornell MacNeill] or a better Vengeance Duet with Gilda. His was a great Verdian interpretation. [New York Post]
- This is a very good production. The costumes and sets are absolutely lovely, the video directing is interesting. The soloists are outstanding and the orchestra are precise and clearly very passionate, likewise with the conducting of James Levine. [IMDb]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
