Clem started writing songs whilst an art student in Durban. One of his early songs, "Vagabond Gun" was a category winner in the SA Music Festival in 1964. On moving back to Rhodesia to work in advertising, he started singing at Rhodesia's first folk venue, The Troubadour in Salisbury's Angwa Street. There he met Sue Eccles and Andy Dillon and together they formed a trio called "The Kinfolk" Shortly after they moved to Johannesburg, Sue Left the group, and Clem & Andy joined up with Yvonne Raff to become "The Legend Trio". Apart from singing at the original Southern African "Troubadour", the trio were involved in a number of SAFMA's National Folk Fests. Clem married Jean Smith in 1967, and he began a solo career, recording some singles with Art Heatlie at Trutone. Mel Miller, Peter Leroy and Sylvia Stott briefly joined Clem to form a group in 1970, before Clem moved back to Rhodesia in 1971, where he soon built up a strong following. He did a series of shows on Rhodesian Television, and presented a radio programme called "Folk on the Rocks" on radio for two seasons. The name came from the folk club he ran at The Beverley Rocks, where it played to packed houses and featured some stellar guests, such as comedians Spike Milligan and Shelley Berman, and folkies like Jeremy Taylor, Brian Finch and Tony Bird. Clem did the opening half of The Shelley Berman Show at the 7-Arts Theatre in Salisbury. A popular star of the annual "Bless 'Em All" Troop Shows, and in great demand in the Rhodesian entertainment scene, Clem recorded his first album "Songs of Love & War". Self-penned and produced, the album was awarded a Gold Disc. He wrote the soundtrack and songs for the C.I.S. film "What A Time" and the theme song for a film honouring the wounded troopies of Rhodesia, "Tsanga". He produced a second album, called "Two Sides to Every Story", before moving back to South Africa. He lived in Cape Town where he was involved in the advertising industry. Condolences can be directed to Bill McDonald ++++++ Sr. MARY LITTLE. For the last nineteen years, many people in Bulawayo would have had the privilege of knowing or have been 'nursed' by Sr. Mary Little, who finally took early retirement from the position as a very active and busy District Nurse. Mary loved her patients and was often heard to comment that it was not essential that the accounting side matched the actual number of visits - especially given many peoples circumstances. Together with with Noel, her husband, (who also played an active part in latter years by doing all the 'hard work', as I call it, i.e. the book and paper work, chasing Medical Aid Societies, and seeing that Mary always had safe and reliable transport to get her to and from work) have gone to settle in England. They will initially be staying at The Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson Home, which is situated at TEMPLE BALLSAL COMMON, not far from a little village called KNOWLE, in the WEST MIDLANDS, near SOLIHULL, which is a suburb of Birmingham. It is very difficult to find on the map, but in real life, I guess it must be quite big. Their address is:- Mr. and Mrs. N.P.C. Little, Flat 16, The Foundation of Lady Katherine Leveson, Temple Balsall, Knowle, Solihull, est Midlands, B93 OAN. England. Telephone Number: 1564 739020. There they will stay until finally settled, and I'm sure that Mary will be anxious to start work again! Talk about late retirement! Mary (nee Browne) was born on the 3rd March, 1927 (she'll not be pleased with me for giving that information, but it is important) on a farm called "Lyndene", near Gwelo, what was then Southern Rhodesia. She often spoke about going to school by horse and cart, and to this day is remembered as the girl with pigtails! She received her senior school education at Chaplin High School, and left to start her General Nurse Training in Bulawayo in 1944. I can imagine what kind of a child Mary was - always full of questions, nursing the sick chickens and calves, learning how to handle cobras without killing them and always wanting to know about everything. She was always very kind and sensitive to the needs of others and seldom worrying about herself. Mary was an avid sporting girl, who loved hockey, tennis and horse riding - once even acquiring a doomed racehorse called "Prince" to torment her family with - given its tendency to go flat out! When she finished her training in about 1948, she returned to live and help at Lyndene, then met and married Noel in 1950 and was housewife in both Gweru and Bulawayo. They had three children viz: Jane (now Petrie) in 1952, Robert in 1954, and Margaret (now Steel) in 1962. Her family might have been larger, as Mary always regarded family as important and has kept up with her extended family ties. Very sadly, shortly after her marriage Mary lost her brother and sister, and then both her parents, all within a three year period. She lost her eldest sister a few years ago, and more recently, Peter Mansel, a cousin, with whom she was brought up with on Lyndene. He died in Australia a few months ago. It was not until 1969 when she eventually started work again, initially at Ingutsheni Hospital, and then joined the Municipal Health Services, working in various clinics and the Infectious Diseases Hospital, then did a Family Planning Course, and finally left after eleven years. With the encouragement and support of Miss Pam Easton and the doctors of Bulawayo Mary started up the private practice of district nursing in the Bulawayo area. She actually "paved the way" for the District Nurses of to-day. Six months later, she invited Margaret Sherfield to join her. At a later date, Isa Broughton and Joy Cox came to join her too. Throughout her entire career, Mary always worked tirelessly and conscientiously and was an inspiration to her family, friends and colleagues too. Namely Joy, Isa, Margaret and later, to me too when I joined the 'scene' in 1995. She kept her family entertained for years with anecdotes of some of her experiences in District Nursing! Mary and Noel, I am sure many people will want to join me in a "toast" to you (I don't think there will be enough champagne!) - but we will say our love and appreciation go with you. We say "GO SLOW", "TAKE CARE" and "GOD SPEED". We will miss you. Viv Bancroft (With special thanks to Margaret Steel, Jane Petrie, Robert Little and Joy Cox and many others who so kindly answered my many questions.) +++++++++ WALK FOR HEALTH FOR HOSPICE Come to the ASCOT RACE COURSE on THURSDAYS AT 4pm to 6pm and WALK For Your HEALTH while you help to raise funds for BULAWAYO ISLAND HOSPICE SERVICE Bring and Walk with your Friends Walk in safety while you walk for fun and fitness on a 3KM circuit around the ASCOT TRACK Cost: $500 per session Pensioners and children $200 Entry at the MAIN GATE Thank You All for your support. ++++++++++++ CORONATION COTTAGES COMFORT FUND MEDIEVAL BANQUET TO BE HELD AT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE ON SATURDAY 16 OCTOBER . "THE DIARY OF AN AFRICAN PRINCESS" by Michele Macmillan On Thursday 21 October At the Polocrosse Club House Bulawayo Country Club Esigodini Rd At 6pm Snacks * Cash Bar This often amusing and sometimes cynical account of the first year experiences of a new Australian immigrant forms a refreshing point of reference for new migrants, potential migrants and even those who have decided to stay in their homeland. "No one recognised my status as a Princess. I was required to do things I would never have imagined" Shonkey operators, skanky boyfriends, feral neighbours, dobbing in and Aussie Rules all form part of her initiation into Australian society. +++++++ MATER DEI HOSPITAL MEMORIAL SRVICE The Memorial Service will be held in the Mater Dei Chapel on the 5th November 1700hrs to 1800hrs, everyone is welcome to attend. Tony and Vivien Hyland +++ MUSIC October sees the return of NOKUTHULA NGWENYAMA, the outstanding young American violinist whose father came from right here in Bulawayo. Yes, violinist! Nokuthula has taken up the violin as well as the viola and it is the former instrument that she will be bringing to Zimbabwe for this visit. She was last here for the 2001 Bulawayo Music Festival but her career has advanced by leaps and bounds since then and she has performed extensively throughout the United States with appearances at the White House and with several major orchestras including the Atlanta, Baltimore and Indianapolis Symphonies, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra. The Washington Post commented that she 'plays beautifully, with dazzling technique in the virtuoso fast movements and deep expressiveness in the slow movements'. Nokuthula plays perhaps the most famous piece of classical music of them all, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, with the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Corrado Trinci on Saturday 23 October at 8.15 p.m. The following Tuesday, 26 October at 7.30 p.m., she plays sonatas by Grieg and Fauré as well as music by Coleridge-Taylor and Kreisler in recital with Jeanette Micklem. Both concerts take place in the Robert Sibson Hall at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music and booking for both is at Meikles. ++++++++ SMALLS CAMERA EQUIPMENT FOR SALE CANON AE 1 BODY CANON 50MM LENS VIVITAR 35-70MM ZOOM LENS CPC 80 TO 200MM LENS VIVITAR AUTO 2600 FLASH VIVITAR 2 X MULTIPLIER VIVTAR 400MM LENS METAL CASE OFFERS PLEASE TELEPHONE GERALD ON 245124 OR CELL 023420483 ++++++++++++++ OFFERS INVITED ~ IVORY HUNTER'S PLATE. Passion is like a fire. A match in isolation is easily blown out by the wind. He worked with Rupert Fothergill and others on Operation Noah, brought the first white rhino to the country and started Kyle NP. It's northern side first and then its southern facing side. Why this one I do not know. In recent years it has been up and blooming sometime between July 26 and August 5 ... But this year it bloomed only in late August (I saw it first on August 22). There are some who say that late Jacs and bright trees in spring means drought ahead - I hope they are wrong! Also with ref to Jacs, there are two white jacarandas on Samora Machel Avenue, opposite the western-most entrance to the Harare Showground's, and also one white jacaranda on Baines Avenue, between seventh street and sixth street ... All three are in full bloom now. Have not seen in any pink ones here but there reputedly some on farms around the country. Regards STAN
