Stars and The African Child

      10/12/2020       Next-->

I was born, grew and flourished in a tawny golden bowl
Of Africa, among ramparts of tumbled granite rocks,
Where antelope passed in painted frieze
Under a pale, bleached sky, eagles floating;
A sky that lit up bronze and flaming at day's end,
Then filled with pinpricks of glacial light,
The Southern Cross spread constant across the sky,
And the Archer standing akimbo over my door,
As the world turned childhood slow in the indigo night.
I tumbled breathless, tear-streaked and dusty
From rough-coat, bony, devilish donkeys,
Feet stuck with paper thorns, devil thorns,
Arms scratched and bare - never thought to wear shoes.
Africa tripped me over, thumped me, loved me,
Washed me in warm brown flowing rivers,
Sandbars rising, sinking, slow windmill
Turning, clanking , tangling my heart,
Caught for all time in the wait-a-bit thorns.
I will never be free, though the grey loerie
Calls 'Go 'way, go 'way', and I did.

HOT FOOD - REGURGITATED!!

It was so lovely to read your article on hot food and warmer-drawers. I come from a family obsessed with "warmer-drawers", my mother insisted on one and my father, who was employed by one, Mr Louis Treger, in October 1959, to work for Kango in Newport Street, Belmont, Bulawayo, began with Ken Robas, developing the first Rhodesian made stoves, under licence from Kelvinator, South Africa.

My mother was the proud recipient of the very first stove produced. This was a glorious affair, four plate, huge oven and of course a warmer-drawer of substantial dimensions, in....."wait-for-it"....light turquoise blue, under the first badge of Kelvinator.

Thereafter with good old business acumen and to reduce royalty fees, Monarch, Kango and Superior ovens, cookers, hot-plates, where born! So remember with the Treger's faith, Ken Robus, (not riding his motor- bikes) and my dad who kept running away from Carl Fuchs, (of Fuchsware fame, German.. don't mention "za War"). Ovens in Rhodesia had big warmer-drawers! Have a wonderful "cold-turkey and roast potatoes this year,

Colin and Wendy Jennings.S.A.
