Morning Mirror is a publication run for the benefit of Bulawayo's only geriatric and frail care home. ADVERTS TO BE SUBMITTED BY MONDAYS AT 5 P.M EDITORIAL TRAVELLING WITH TINY TOTS Now don't get me wrong, I am absolutely in favour of car seats for babies and toddlers. But having recently undertaken a lengthy car journey with a Tiny Person in a very constraining car seat, I mused at length on my own children's travels in the dark ages, when car seats were not obligatory. Dad would pile the kids and various friends into the back of the car with toys and books, and off we would go. There in the back seat we would read, play maths games which helped everyone extensively, play 'I Spy', 'Hinky Pinky', 'Cricket', License Plate Numbers' , Tic, tac Toe, 'Hic, Hac, Hoc', 'Twenty Questions' and 'I'm Going on a Picnic'..... We would also pack the faithful Barbies with their extensive wardrobes that the little girls would spend hours dressing and undressing, there were plenty of My Little Ponies, dinkies and card games too. When we had the combi (minibus) Dad would make the entire back of the combi into a giant bed, with the suitcases underneath a thin mattress for support, and the kids could play, sleep or enjoy the scenery as we travelled. There was still plenty of that tireless question 'How Much Longer' but certainly time fled by. 'Padkors' was carefully planned !! (Padkors is the Afrikaans word for 'Road Food') and Mum spent many hours planning delicious treats for travellers. Cold sausages, carrot sticks, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter sandwiches, a thermos of coffee and off we would venture. Yes, there were still squabbles, but at least one could move around instead of being tied to one spot, and one spot only, for hour after hour. Seat belts, car seats were not obligatory in the Olden Days!! I know the laws are there for very good reason, that car seats for babies and toddlers have saved countless lives, I am just glad that I was able to experience and enjoy, unfettered toddler travel way back in the Dark Ages! ++++ Watchdog !! ++++ 2) Notices and Events Bulawayo Quilters' Guild will be meeting on :- DATE : Saturday 10th February 2018. BLUE PLANET II EACH EPISODE LASTS AN HOUR. 'Blue Planet II' is a 2017 BBC series on marine life narrated and presented by Sir David Attenborough. Filming took place over a course of more than four years involving 125 expeditions across 39 countries which produced more than 6,000 hours of underwater dive footage from an estimated 4000+ dives! '"Blue Planet II" is the greatest nature series that the BBC has ever produced.' [The Atlantic] 'Even if you are braced for a glorious production, "Blue Planet II" is likely to take your breath away [Variety] This was hypnotic, humbling, majestic television at the top of its game. [The Times] Admission: $2.00 [$10.00 for the series, free to Film members] WEDNESDAY 7 FEBRUARY ACADEMY CONCERT AND PRESENTATION ROBERT SIBSON HALL AT 5.30 P.M. The annual Academy Presentation and Concert will follow the usual format of a short concert, an equally short prize-giving and a short speech from the guest speaker who on this occasion will be Rick Kriel. Dinner will be available afterwards for all who would like to join the guests and members of the Academy staff and council. The cost is $10.00 and the menu is: Roast pork, roast potatoes and vegetables. Chocolate eclair. Dinner should, as usual, be booked in advance, no later than 9.00 a.m. on the day of the event. THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY AT 7.00 P.M. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' returns to the brisk serial-style adventure of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' when Indy (Harrison Ford) is approached by an art collector who wants him to embark upon a search for the Holy Grail. It so happens that another archaeologist has disappeared while searching for the precious goblet; it so happens further that the missing man is Indy's own father, Dr. Henry Jones (marvelously portrayed by Sean Connery). What follows is a roller-coaster of thrills, whisking both the elder and the younger Jones to Venice, Berlin, and the most treacherous regions of the Middle East. Complicating matters is the presence of lovely Alison Doody, whose attraction to Indy - and his dad - does not dissuade her from her loyalty to the Nazi party. '"Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is the most wonderful lark. It is also a class act.' [The Telegraph] 'As I watched it, I felt a real delight, because recent Hollywood escapist movies have become too jaded and cynical... What Spielberg has done is to take many of the same elements, and apply all of his craft and sense of fun to make them work yet once again. And they do ' [Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times] Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] FRIDAY 9 FEBRUARY AT 7.00 P.M. SOUTH PACIFIC "South Pacific" needs no introduction and sixty years on the film, first released in March 1958, is as watchable as ever. It played continuously in London for four-and-a-half years and the soundtrack album had more weeks at No.1 in the UK Albums Chart than any other album, 115 in all. 'Everyone who wished that "South Pacific" might be made into a large, luxurious film, glowing with scenic detail of lush green islands in blue tropical seas, bursting with a grand romantic story and brimming with stereophonic songs, need have no further anxiety. His wish has been fulfilled.' [New York Times] 'One of the best musicals ever made with songs that have crossed time.' [Amazon] Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m. ($10.00) SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY AT 6.30 P.M. BLESSING CHIMANGA VALENTINE'S SPECIAL Blessing returns with his full six-piece band for a Valentines special as part of his tour promoting his new DVD and audio album across Zimbabwe. There will also be a FREE one-hour music workshop for all students who are attending the concert. Booking at the Academy. Tickets: $5.00 [adults], $2.00 [students] THURSDAYS 15 & 22 FEBRUARY, 1 & 8 MARCH AT 7.15 P.M. VICTORIA [PROVISIONAL!] Created and written by acclaimed novelist Daisy Goodwin, this lavish costume drama is a landmark account of the life of one of history's greatest monarchs. With cinematic production values and an ensemble cast of award-winning talent, Victoria is a story of passionate affairs, power struggles and unrequited love, at the centre of which stands the new Queen - a strong, complex and wilful woman who must, somehow, become an enduring icon. 'Jenna Coleman's luminous Queen Victoria is just as compelling as she enters season two finding her footing on the throne and asserts herself against her husband Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) in the splendid looking series.' [The Telegraph] '"Victoria" carries on up the Khyber Pass in a right royal series 2 opener. [Radio Times] FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY AT 7.00 P.M. RHAPSODY / LES DEUX PIGEONS When the great Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov agreed to perform as a guest with The Royal Ballet in 1980, he requested a new work by Ashton. The resultant piece has been a firm favourite ever since and receives a stunning performance from Natalia Osipova and Steven McRae. After the interval, Lauren Cuthbertson and Vadim Muntagirov lead a charismatic cast in Ashton's poignant and heart-warming reflection on Love set to music by Messager. and first performed on Valentine's Day 1961, 'Wonderful. Both ballets are stunning and I can't congratulate the dancers enough for their skill and talent.' [ROH audience review] 'Frederick Ashton's 1962 ballet is swooningly romantic and unashamedly old fashioned.' [The Stage] ++++ 3) Congratulations ++++ 4) Condolences/In Memoriam/Wreath Funds DAVID GEORGE ANDERSON A Thanksgiving Service in memory of David George Anderson, late of Webb Low and Barry, will be held on Wednesday 14th February 2018 at St. John's Cathedral, George Silundika Avenue at 2pm. All welcome. ++++ Dave Anderson Dave has been an outstanding scout leader - as a youngster he was a King Scout, an 11th Riverside Cub Leader in the 1960s, had his woodbadge, was on the Leader Training Team and all the Matabeleland and Provincial Scout Councils. His quiet, stable aura provided a calm security to everyone he influenced. He freely gave his time and expertise as a lawyer to Matabeleland scouting and will be missed by everyone. Our sincere condolences to Mrs Anderson and her family. ++++ MIKE COLEY Mike Coley of Coley Hall (Pvt.) Ltd. Bulawayo, the transport company he created, was born in Melsetter into a family who were Native Department Staff and subject to frequent transfer around the Administrative Districts of Rhodesia. Mike passed away in the Riverside Retirement Manor, Rivonia, Johannesburg on Old Year's day 2017, having been widowed in July 2013 when his wife Edith of more than 60 years passed on. They had moved to Johannesburg post Zimbabwe Independence. Mike enjoyed his tennis and golf in his later years. Mike is survived by his daughters Wendy Reeve (mobile 0822580252, email : laundry@mweb.co.za) and Brenda Dwyer both of Johannesburg, 2 Grandsons, 2 Granddaughters and 8 Great Grandchildren. Wendy can be reached at the contacts given above. Mike's senior schooling was at Plumtree School (Milner House 1947) where he played 1st XV rugby and was a "heavy" in the Gilbert & Sullivan Mikado that year. In 1962 Mike and another OP, Bertie Hall (of Rhodesian racing motorcycle fame) established Coley Hall as a small transport company with one truck servicing mines, ranches and administrative districts in Matbeleland and the Midlands. This small beginning saw Coley Hall grow into a mega operation, with another OP Hilton Morgan (Springbok Hockey) joining management and Coley Hall operated from the Congo to the Cape not withstanding the political upheavals in the countries within which they operated, eg. UDI 1965 et al. Mike recounted to me how as a Plumtree schoolboy in the 1940's and on holiday at Nkai that his Dad,the NC, was invited to meet the Matabele Chiefs who told Coley senior that there would be a move back to their domination of the area. The meeting took place over a few days at a location of the Chiefs' choice and Mike accompanied his Dad to shoot game and provide meat for the gathering. New leaders elected become heady with power And do not honour their electoral talk shower, Puffed up with their own self-importance and greed Enrich themselves at unstoppable speed, Grab the best farms, build themselves mansions, Wear zoot suits and drive super cars, Walk the red carpets, use screaming motorcade cars, Stop! Don't delay. Clear the way Finance luxurious overseas trips, Lavish weddings, parties and bribery tips! In every department corruption is rife Leading to further unrest and strife, As the leaders get richer, their subjects poorer, Who fought for their freedom, one vote for all And where has it led them after all Most are worse off than ever before And hanker back to the days of yore, For their new chosen leaders are all for self, Have emptied the coffers of the nation's wealth Don't care a rap for the country's needs and health So who is free Neither you nor we Who work for peanuts, if at all, There comes a time when enough is enough, And life becomes too unbearably tough, Which leads to further frustrations, businesses stall, Uprisings, strikes, maybe even to civil war! As the downtrodden, hungry, angry hordes Want their piece of cake from those at the top, In an ever encircling freedom plot. Even dictators, Are not really free in an absolute way, Need to be guarded both night and day Bring in the army to cling to their power A desperate stand by the hour. But will they succeed In the end, not at all, As worldly unrest leads to final downfall. It has happened before and will happen again And the ruins of their empires only remain! THORA HARTLEY ++++ BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION Dear Member The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe unveiled a $15 million tourism development support facility to fund tourism projects. The Ministry of Tourism through the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority will provide Publicity Associations with grants to fund regional marketing plans. The Ministry will establish a national facilitation committee to facilitate smooth entrance of tourists into the country at airports and border posts, and other problems encountered by tourists. Mr Moffat Ndlovu, former Town Clerk of Bulawayo, has succeeded Dr Mlilo as the Chairman of the BPA. In line with the Ministry of Tourism's push to rebrand and market Zimbabwe actively, he has asked his Committee to assist with his strategic plan to rebrand the BPA so that it can contribute meaningfully in this campaign The Bulawayo City Council projects for 2018 include the continuing of projects not completed in 2017, the development of 670 medium density residential stands in Mahatshula; the redevelopment of the Egodini project; rehabilitation of waste water treatment plants; replacement of domestic and non domestic water meters; servicing of new areas with water, sewer and roads, rehabilitation of roads city-wide; installation of solar street lights on a pilot basis and installation of new street lights and tower lights, amongst other projects. Council is also reaching out to potential investors more aggressively. Further information with regard to Council's future plans may be obtained from the Public Relations Department on 885789.
