STRANGE AND SCARY MEDICAL FINDS!!

A diagonal wrinkle in your ear lobe may be an early warning sign of ticker trouble. In fact, folks with this ear crease were much more likely to show signs of heart disease during a CT scan than people who didn't have the crease. One theory is that the wrinkles are caused by the collapse of tiny blood vessels to the ear lobe, and this is a reflection of the changes in blood vessels around the heart!!

A growing body of research shows that people with red hair need larger doses of anesthesia and often are resistant to local pain blockers like Novocaine.
A 2004 study showed that redheads require, on average, about 20 percent more general anesthesia than people with dark hair or blond coloring.

Research has found that people with blood type O are 83 percent more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes as those with other blood types. as those with other types. Type A is the least likely and Type B folks kind of sit in the middle of the two. But it's not all bad news for O's: Other research shows you're less likely to suffer from the deadliest forms of malaria-a disease transmitted by mosquitoes-possibly because deadly malarial proteins don't stick to type O blood cells the way they do to other types.

Compared to people who aced a 'smell test', those who struggled to identify some common odors like oranges or peppermint were 20% more likely to die within five years. The University of Chicago study team says losing your ability to identify odors may be a very early warning sign of impending health trouble.

SIGH!!!

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

THURSDAY 15 JUNE VICTORIA
Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
The final episodes of 'Victoria', the series depicting the first years of the reign of Queen Victoria, played by Jenna Coleman. Now happily married to Prince Albert, Victoria is desperately afraid of dying in childbirth as intrigue continues to swirl around Prince Albert.
'Coleman's queen is pert, witty, sparkling - and possibly better company than the original.' [The Telegraph]
'Tom Hughes continues to smoulder as the Prince and his determination and intelligence just make him even more attractive. He certainly gives Ross Poldark a run for his money!' [The Express]
'How ITV's Victoria continues to excel week by week is nothing short of remarkable.' [Evening Standard]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

FRIDAY 16 JUNE PUCCINI: LA BOHEME
Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
The pairing of one of the best loved operas of all time with one of the world's most popular operatic couples is a recipe for success. And rarely has Puccini's 'La Boheme' had such a photogenic and engaging cast. 'Director Robert Dornhelm focuses entirely on his stars Netrebko and Villazon, whose incredible presence carries the film along. There's room for big emotions, powerful voices, grand opera and tremendous cinema,' wrote one of Vienna's leading dailies.
'Succulently dramatic.. a tribute to the stars' power.' [The Times]
'Beautifully sung all round.' [The Observer]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] Dinner available during the interval ($10.00).

THURSDAY 22 JUNE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who is mourning the deaths of his wife and baby when his estranged nobleman father arrives and asks him to join the Crusades in Jerusalem. Mindful that conducting the Lord's work will help him atone for his sins, Balian agrees and embarks on the perilous journey.
'That rare big-star blockbuster (Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons top the cast) that still manages to have something relevant to say.' [Los Angeles Times]
'A gargantuan epic, a historical adventure-drama of overwhelming visual grandeur.' [Chicago Tribune]
'Its concept is gutsy, its script is literate and intelligent, its visuals and cinematic craftsmanship are mouth-dropping, and its vision of the insanity of various religions vying to dominate the real estate of the Holy Land comes through with great power.' [Variety]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Film Members] Supper available from 6.15 p.m.

FRIDAY 23 JUNE SIMON & GARFUNKEL: OLD FRIENDS LIVE ON STAGE

Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
Simon & Garfunkel's Old Friends: Live On Stage (not literally!) is a recording taken from a series of shows at New York's Madison Square Garden in early December 2003, part of their highly successful 'Old Friends' reunion concert tour with The Everly Brothers as special guests.
'Despite only recording together for a few short years, Simon and Garfunkel have managed to sell over 40 million albums, win five Grammies and acquire a mythical status. This comeback tour was a spine-tingling reminder that their songs and voices were worthy of all that success.' [Guardian]
Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet Members] Dinner available from 6.00 p.m.

TUESDAY 27 JUNE CONCERT: EREN LEVENDO LU (PIANO)

8) Bulawayo News

Hi Maggie,
There are two things people should be warned about:

1. Overstaying your visa limit in South Africa. I'm on a British passport, and up to now, the immigration official would always ask how long I wanted to stay, and whatever period I opted for, he would give me three months. So I never checked the dates. However, on our last trip, we arrived at the small border post at Stockpoort early in the morning on 1st May, only to be told that I had overstayed my visa by one day. The very officious offical handed me a "Declaration of Foreigner as an Undesirable Person", advising that I was prohibited from entering the country for one year. He told me that I could appeal, and gave me a telephone number and email address of a number of people at Home Affairs. Fortunately I noticed that I had to make representation to them within 10 days - or else.

Naturally, the phones at Home Affairs are continually jammed (or unanswered), and none of my emails were even acknowledged. We are going to Australia in July and have already paid for the tickets, and my travel agent advised me that I could not go straight into the transit lounge at O.R. Tambo, but would have to go through SA customs to check onto the international flight.

There was no alternative but to consult a lawyer, which I did, using the first one that popped up on the net who specialised in such matters. He managed - in the mysterious way that Africa works - to get the appeal lifted in one day flat - at a cost to us of over nearly R9,000.

And he told me "Upon entering the country you generally need to provide confirmation of your return ticket/itinerary or at least a verbal confirmation to the immigration officials, who should advise you that your departure date does not coincide with your visa. The argument is generally that the officials are failing in their duty to advise people accurately and this creates a reasonable expectation that you have been issued with a new visa. Your history of visits to SA without infringement also counts in your favour.
Another little scam to beware of.

2. Obtaining an Australian visa on a South African passport. This used to be a relatively simple process - no more. It took me days to untangle the complexities of the on-line application - and then Rich had either to drive to Harare or fly to South Africa and get himself to Pretoria for the biometric screening. He chose South Africa on the basis that it would be cheaper than running the gauntlet of road blocks, staying at least one night in Harare, and then finding that the machine didn't work. We are three weeks down the line, and still confused about the mixed messages on line about the process of the application. And there is no way of getting clarification except by writing to the High Commission in Pretoria who, so far, don't answer emails! If we had known what this entailed, we would have used an agent - no doubt at great expense - but at least perhaps avoiding some of the headaches.

Maggie, this is very long winded, but at least I've let you know. You could just put
BEWARE:
1. Check the dates on your South African visa when you enter the country, or risk being declared an undesirable person and banned for at least one year (and that's for an overstay of only one day).

2. Give yourself plenty of time to obtain an Australian visa - it is an incredibly complex procedure on line, and you now have to undergo biometric screening either in Harare or Pretoria. Maybe better to use an agent to save yourself the pain and suffering.

Best
Bookey
