"Epic saga with Kirk Douglas as a rebellious slave who leads a crusade for freedom against the forces of the Roman Empire. There are staggering battle scenes and delicious performances from Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and especially Peter Ustinov, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his scene-stealing work" (Maltin's 2011 Movie Guide). The film won three other Oscars and also stars Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis and Herbert Lom. Admission: $3.00 [free to film members] KHACHATURIAN: SPARTACUS - BALLET Friday 9 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. - with supper interval. "Internationally acclaimed as the greatest male dancer of his generation, Carlos Acosta stars as the rebel slave in the most spectacular of all Soviet ballets. Filmed in Paris after triumphant performances in Moscow and London, the Bolshoi's classic production presents the Cuban star at the height of his physical and dramatic powers, the greatest Spartacus of our time" [Jenny Gilbert]. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members] LESLIE HOWARD (PIANO) Thursday 15 September in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m. Leslie Howard celebrates the 200th anniversary of Liszt's birth on 22 October 1811 with several of his works as well as music by another great composer-pianist, Sergei Rachmaninov: Liszt: Variations on a theme of J.S.Bach: "Weinen Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" Liszt: Sarabande and Chaconne on themes from Handel's Opera "Almira" Liszt: Romancero Espagnol Rachmaninov: Three piano pieces from November 1917 Rachmaninov: Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op.36 (original version, 1913) The performance of the Romancero Espagnol will be the first anywhere in Africa! It is a 20-minute fantasy - of enormous difficulty even by Liszt's standards - based on traditional Spanish themes.which was only recently discovered and has been edited for performance by Leslie himself. The rest of the programme features two of Liszt's lesser know pieces derived respectively from music by Bach and Handel. After the interval come the last three short pieces that Rachmaninov wrote before he left Russia for ever and his magnificent Second Sonata, not often heard but a work to rival the popular piano concertos. This concert should be one of the year's highlights, if not the highlight...
