I have never been an admirer of litigious societies, but I think the time has come in Zimbabwe. Not that we wish to make any money out of it, but we would very much like to make officialdom stand up and be accountable. HeeHoo and I are not claimers or complainers, but the very fabric of society has become so distressed that maybe a few expensive financial and hurtful demands will make those in power sit up and take notice. How many times have you had a puncture and destroyed a tyre rim because of an untended pothole ? Have you made a claim ? Probably not because "it won't make any difference anyhow". How many times have you had a collision or almost had a collision at a non functioning traffic light ? If you have been unfortunate enough to actually have an accident, have you claimed against the authorities ? Probably not because "it won't make any difference, too time consuming, too many hassles involved". The municipality is responsible for the maintenance of the traffic lights. They have had nearly two years of billing us in expensive real money rates and taxes and have had ample time to repair these problems. Are they not one of the most important facets of our lives. What is more important that a life taken at traffic lights which sometimes work, but more often do not work. The traffic lights at Greystoke Way and Cecil Avenue have not worked for years now, they were repaired yesterday finally and no one even took any notice. Every car I saw drove through whether green, orange or red with speed and bravado !! The other day at Ascot the east/west facing robots were working but the north/south were not !! ! There was a massive pile up, a host of heavily damaged expensive motor vehicles, and looking at the wreckage, possibly many people had sustained injuries. Did anyone take action against the roads authority ? Life is stressful in Zimbabwe, so stressful, that unless one has incredible energy, it is unlikely that anyone did anything except to make an insurance claim. A few months ago in our suburb we had a massive hole that had been dug by the municipal workers, right in the middle of a busy tarred intersection. It was a water leak, a common occurrence, but this vast hole remained without repair, in the middle of the road, without any danger markings, for months. The local residents used to put giant branches in it to warn unsuspecting motorists as the hole was impossible to see in the always unlit suburb, How many cars broke an axle or ruined a tyre in this hole I wonder ? I also feel very litigious about ZESA, when I think of my deep freeze and the meat therein every time we have a 9 hour power cut every other day !! My daughter was in Brisbane when they had that hurricane and every family without power (for a paltry 12 hours) was given $250 Aussie dollars (and more) for anything that might have gone off in their freezers !! So far since our power was so irregular we have lost, a deep freeze, a TV and a fridge, they just cannot cope with the surges and power outages we have daily. Now can I claim from ZESA for these ??? Last night HeeHoo was on a plane to Harare, a plane that left twenty minutes before it was due to take off, a plane that left a dozen angry passengers totally stranded. Ongoing connections were missed, and important business meetings never took pace as a result of it all. Did anyone take it up with Air Zimbabwe ? Is anyone going to sue or make a claim ? Oh no, most stranded passengers were angry enough to take it further at the time, but no one I am quite sure could be bothered, knowing that the inefficiency and ineptitude is so deep that nothing would result from a legal claim at any rate. Now if we lived in a litigious society like the USA, the authorities would sit up and take notice. Faced with massive financial claims, would we have any robots that do not work ? Would we have giant unfenced trenches in the middle of the road ? Would we have an airline that does what it wants, when it wants regardless of the inconvenience to it's passengers? Maybe the powers that be need to contract the workings of the traffic lights out to an independent party ? Why is it that when private enterprise gets involved, only then do systems start to function again ? Africa needs to rethink its logic and opt for privatization instead of the dreary cry for nationalization. We pay our rates and taxes, we expect at least a semblance of service. Anyone know the name of a good lawyer ? ++++++++ 2) NOTICES AND EVENTS OUTDOOR COOKING COMPETITION CHRISTMAS IN THE AFRICAN BUSH SAT 20TH NOV 2010 VENUE : SUBURBS SQUASH CLUB (20 PAULING ROAD) ENTRANCE : $5.00 PER ADULT $2.00 CHILDREN U12, SUBURBS SQUASH (PAID UP) MEMBERS FREE STARTING FROM : 8AM (you may start when you want - depends on your meal) JUDGING TIME : 3PM (JUDGES TO BE ANNOUNCED AT A LATER DATE) ENTRY FEE : $40 PER TEAM TEAMS OF 2-4 (RESPONSIBLE FOR PREPARATION, COOKING & CLEANING - NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE PERMITTED) TEAMS MUST SUPPLY OWN EQUIPMENT, TABLES, GAZEBOS, BIN BAGS, WOOD OR GAS ETC NO ELECTRICITY ALLOWED CASH PRIZES TO BE WON FOR BEST MEAL, BEST PRESENTED TEAM AS PER THEME COOKING SPACE ALLOCATIONS (4M x 4M) - FIRST ENTRIES, FIRST CHOICE MEALS & WARES CAN BE SOLD TO THE PUBLIC (JUST KEEP SOME FOR THE JUDGES) SUBURBS XMAS FUN DOUBLES SQUASH COMPETITION WILL BE ON THE SAME DAY PLAYERS DO NOT HAVE TO COOK AS WELL UNLESS THEY WOULD LIKE TO TIMES & FORMAT OF THE SQUASH TOURNAMENT TO BE ANNOUNCED AT A LATER DATE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION : PLEASE CONTACT CERI - 0712 621 723 / suburbs@netconnect.co.zw ++++++++ ISLAND HOSPICE GOLF COMPETITION Just a reminder that Island Hospice are holding a fund raising Golf Competition at Hornung Park Saturday 30 October, 4 ball, better ball, Stapleford, own pairs. In March this year a quiz questions session took place in the beautiful surroundings of the Hillside Dams Conservancy. Following this I got the idea to try and organise some more of these events and I put a write-up in the Morning Mirror calling for contact persons at the various senior citizens' complexes. Unfortunately nothing much transpired and being a senior citizen myself I lack the means and the energy to call on these places myself. I therefore now appeal to JUNIOR residents living close to any complexes to act as go-between to keep contact with me (e-mail) and the old folk. Please let me have your particulars !!! (Don't worry about ID number or your tax reference.......) I have discovered a very attractive and suitable place in Pembroke Place in Hillside not far off the Matopos Road. Entry will be free and the restaurant there will provide tea/coffee to pensioners (only) at subsidised prices. The provisional date for the proposed session is Tuesday 16th November. (It will have to be a week-day away from the busy week-end). Time 10 - 12 am. Directions to Pembroke Place are as follows: From town proceed on the Matopos Road towards Cresta Churchill, turn left into either Pembroke Road of Napier Avenue and follow to the end of the road. Anybody is welcome to attend. The more the merrier, whatever age. It would be appreciated if younger people with vacant seats in their cars would give lifts to seniors without transport. All I know is that things are a whole lot different to when I was once a teenager. I have a lot of friends who have teenage children, and they are exactly that.. CHILDREN! So why is it that I find a good 30% of the local "watering holes" are filled with children under the age of 18! I ask myself "WHERE ARE THE PARENTS"! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!. Have they forgotten that Bars and Pubs are NO UNDER 18! I Have on many occasion asked the owners of these Bars and Pubs WHY are they serving these children and I always get the same answer "We need the money, and the parents are dishing it out"! I am a 26 year old mother of a 10month old baby and I FEAR for my child's future!. I will, and am not ashamed to admit that I have a very healthy social life, HOWEVER, I know that my babies grandparents are more than capable of babysitting and in actual fact, it is much better that my child is in a safe and homely environment than at the pub. For all you who bring your 10yr old and younger children to the pub after 7pm, BE ASHAMED! That is ridiculous. That poor child should be fed and in bed by that time, even if it is a Friday and there is no school the next day! EXTREMELY CONCERNED MOTHER BULAWAYO +++++++ Once again, prices are creeping up in Zimbabwe. Every week, your dollar buys you less. Shop owners are entirely to blame, they should stop being so greedy by trying to make a quick buck: it is better to have a fast turnover with smaller profit margins than big profits and slow turnover. Inflation is on the up and this time it will not be as easily rectified as was the case with the Zim dollar. So when staff start demanding wage increases to keep up with price hikes, local traders will be to blame. Making a mistake is not the mistake, repeating it is. It was officially opened on 4th November 1972. If one is up for a brisk walk, it is enjoyable and after passing beneath a road, a path leads one to the museum. On its approach it looks like an original station and its neatness, tranquillity and displays are impressive. It is very affordable being ZAR20/adult and photographs are allowed. The only downside is the lack of souvenir and refreshment shops. There is neither any verbal commentary nor audio-impressions. The British, in their quest for the colonisation of Africa found it essential that a railroad be constructed. Cecil John Rhodes realised the importance of rail communication and for Rhodesia he envisaged two outlets to the sea. Work began in 1892 from Fontesvilla to Umtali in September 1892, and from Vryburg to Bulawayo in May 1893. Both were completed in October 1897 and February 1898, respectively. The railway network grew rapidly reaching mining areas. Prior to this the only means of transportation was the ox-wagon. The first train arrived in Bulawayo on 4th November 1897. From 1st October 1936 the Rhodesia Railways Ltd. became the owners of the entire railway system in Rhodesia and Zambia and the Vryburg-Bulawayo section. On 1st April 1947 the Rhodesian Government acquired the assets of the Rhodesia Railways Ltd. and on 1st November 1949 the Railway became a statutory body. The name was altered to the National Railways of Zimbabwe on 1st May 1980. There was an idea in the minds of the railway historic society that a small steam locomotive be established in a running shed on the museum grounds so that trains from yesterday can be run during special times of celebration or events. Sadly, this was never to materialise. It is unfortunate though that there are a number of things missing including the old Rhodesian notes, medals and cups and much of the Royal utensils and cutlery. Some furniture is broken. It seems also that breaches in the fence have allowed people access to the carriages at night, and one old carriage was burnt down. Most of the carriages are in urgent need of repair, re-painting/varnishing and mopping. ++++++++++ I maybe wrong but I remember Christian Vigne at another location, I think it was in eight avenue. That was during the 1950's. My Dad was an avid reader, reading at lunchtime and also when he got home in the time before supper. Besides swopping books at work and buying/exchanging books secondhand from the 'Basement Bookmart in the lower Carlton Arcade, he would regularly visit, the Public Library, the Railway Club Library and Christian Vignes. I well remember the shop for the smell of coffee and the sight of people sitting around and reading! Funny the older you get the more like your parents you become. On occasion he would pick up one of his books and put it down just as quickly with the explanation that he had read it already, having borrowed it previously. I often wondered as to how that was possible, now I confess that on occasion I do the same myself! Regards Conal Morgan +++++++++ "An interesting fact about October 2010: This OCT. has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, all in 1 month. It happens once in 823 years. These are considered money bags months Based on Chinese fengshui." BUT - July 2011 will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, all in 1 month??? :o) +++++++++ Dear Mags HeeHoo is a philistine how can he prefer one of those electric thingies to the joy of holding a book, curled up somewhere comfy and turning the pages and disappearing into the magic world of words...I so enjoy a good read and go to the library here every week for a bunch of books to take home and sometimes shut my eyes and pick an unknown author just to see what they are like - sometimes they are yukh but most times they open a world into something new..I read anything biographies etc etc as well as fiction. Christian Vigne was a wonderful shop in my day too - I found my first battered copy in their sale section funnily enough for the beginning of the Morland Dynasty - a historical fiction thing but written around the correct history of the time and now I am about to read the 33rd one here ! I battled to get them through the sanctions era but had a cousin in UK who stomped around on my behalf, reading them herself first...and the author promised to bring it right into the now time and she is doing fine on that score. I write to her now too...real chatty patty with my fingers I am. I am so glad to know it is still a vibrant bookshop -- my absolute favourite place to be.. I love your newspaper and its a joy when it pops in..so thank you again With love Jean ++++++++ 10) PERSONAL COLUMN "Prayer requests" : If anyone is in need of prayer for any problem - please contact "Nola" on 241379 during the following times: 10 a.m. - 12.00 mornings except Sunday Mornings, and 7.30 - 9. 30 p.m. any evening except Wednesday evenings. Proudly on 13th November 2010 the Rhodesian Grey's Scouts Regiment will celebrate their regimental reunion in Houghton Regis Dunstable United Kingdom with a full military band and procession through the High St., culminating in a flag lowering ceremony on the Village green. Many of the units Commanding Officers will be present and maybe for the last time the Grey's flag will be proudly lowered to finally rest as the whispers of those who sacrificed their lives for their country are remembered by those of us that remain. The march will begin at 11.00am on Saturday morning and finish with the flag ceremony on the Green and a regimental luncheon served to all those in attendance at a cost of 8.50Gbp at around 12.00pm and then its off to the pub to damp the dust. All those Grey's in attendance please dress smart and if you have a beret please use it as this is our sign of the pride we hold in the history of our unit. If you need regimental ties they can be purchased on the Grey's website. We welcome all the related families and friends and special invited guests to our parade on the day and I'm sure old friendships will be rekindled. She has been fairly ill recently and currently has a full time Carer looking after her. We would like her to be able to stay in her home, if it is at all possible. Unfortunately the Carer is really there to help her get around the house and is not really equipped to help my Mother manage her home. I have heard that there are a number of Zim couples at about retirement age who are keen to come down to SA, but who don't have the resources to purchase and set up a home down here. I am looking for someone like this to come and live on my Mother's property and to help her manage her home. Hopefully this would give them a chance to set themselves up down here. I was wondering if you know anyone who may be interested in this opportunity. What we are looking for is basically as follows: Preferably a semi retired or retired couple. We would consider a single woman. Age 55 to 65 Experience with running a large home with Domestic servants etc Interested in Gardening and the outdoors The job would entail helping to handle things like the Domestic servants, paying bills, basic maintenance, some driving, ensuring the security is in place, helping with shopping etc. The house has a self contained flatlet with carport, separate kitchen, large lounge, bathroom and bedroom. There would be access to the whole of the 2.5acre property. We would be offering a small package of rent, electricity and water free, plus a small monthly retainer, but to be honest the main benefit is the lifestyle. If it could work for my Mother and for some couple up in Zim who need a break then that would be wonderful.
