WRETCHED WORMLESS WENCH

I had become quite fond of them, I have after all, fed them nurtured them, protected them, almost loved them for nearly six months.

And they were my "Mother's Day" gift from SheHoo- must -sing and in addition, my being a total greenie, I wanted very much to follow my new life motto and "Reduce, Re Use, and Recycle" !!

They arrived quite illegally via someone's hand luggage on a plane from Johannesburg. Imagine the consternation of the baggage handler had he chosen to open that particular piece of contraband !!

They were some 2kg of squirming squiggling little "Tigers", Reds" and "Dendras" all with magnificent South African blood stock, so my worm garden would undoubtedly be better than Gayes !!

The worm garden came with a full book of instructions, pretty scientific stuff. It did not take too long before HeeHoo- must -Fish came up with the perfect formula for vermicular success. But he said, carefully corroborated by HeeHoo, you do not have enough worms !!

Now I was in two minds as to whether or not to believe them .... did they have an ulterior motive? Were they taking such a keen interest in my Mother's Day gift because of some deeper more sinister reason. ? Could it possibly be that they coveted my beautiful long athletic worms for their fishing trips perchance ???

So off I went to a local worm harvester and purchased ten thousand extra local "tigers" "reds" and "dendras" and when I introduced the Zimbabwean worms to the South African worms, there erupted, horrors of horrors, a vermiivorous massacre, there was distinct xenophobia in the worm can !!

Happily once they sorted out their nematodal cross- border differences, a life of serenity settled on the Farm.

My little Can of Worms was undoubtedly the best fed can on the block. Only the very best veggie peels, the sweetest outer lettuce leaves, succulent curly potato peels, a touch of mealy meal now and again, and those slim little fellows became fine, well fed, fat worms, and their only job in life was to eat the kitchen scraps and make worm manure for Mother !!

As the big bream fishing tournament approached the Boys began to cast long, longing looks at my Worm Tank. They were distinctly scathing about my little family and my desire to "save the planet" by recycling all my kitchen scraps.

"Leave the Kyoto Protocol to those Al Gores in their tiny New York apartments with their two pot plants", they said with a gleam in their eyes, just how much good is a cup of worm wee a week on your gigantic garden !!

But Just yesterday HeeHoo- Must - Fish took a vested interest in my worms and came over at my urgent bidding to investigate a distinct lethargy in the ranks.

There was the problem it was obvious, and with heavy annelided glances at each other, the Fishing Boys made an instant diagnosis...... maggots, mounds of nasty quivering crawling maggots had invaded my happy little home, it looked like the Normandy Invasion all over again.

Munch munch they went mawkishly over my benevolent worm farm, causing armageddon as they marched. From whence did they come? I thought maggots came from meat, what had we been eating ?

I vowed to wash every single thing in permanganate of potash again as we did during the cholera scare.....

And so back to the book, over came the resident Worm Doctor, lifted up my precious Can O' Worms, to find a veritable Dam O' Worms !!

This Worm Harvesting is not all it is cracked up to be trust me ! "Don't overfeed them" warns the book !! But hey, that's why I got them in the first place - to eat, reuse, recycle and reduce !!

Now a well brought up Matabele girl can cope with wriggly worms with dexterity, but no self respecting Matabele can deal with a bunch of motley, miserable maggots !!

I am not so sure now if I am going to consider my carbon worm footprint in future .... in fact I am thinking very seriously about donating my twenty thousand little squirmy, squiggly friends to those Ferocious Fishermen after all .....

PERFORMING ARTS AND THE ACADEMY

SCHOOL OF ROCK
The Academy is launching this new initiative in February, headed by Tookie Androuliakos who writes:
"The School of Rock, promoting the highest ideals of musicianship and performance, is structured around the five main instruments found in a standard five-piece band: drums, bass guitar, rhythm/lead guitar, keyboards and vocals. Under the heading of Rock, will fall the studies of the following:
1. Blues - Country, Classic and Urban
2. Country - Rockabilly, Mainstream, Contemporary
3. Gospel and Doo Wop
4. Mainstream Pop, 80s Dance
5. Folk and Folk Rock
6. Soul
7. American vs British Rock - Psychedelic Rock, Country/Southern Rock, Jazz Rock, Art Rock, Glitter Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.

The tuition will mainly in modules, most of which are group based. The course are open to anyone who is interested but it is hoped that the schools around Bulawayo will embrace the opportunity for their school bands to participate.
The group modules will not run strictly with school terms and the School of Rock will also provide short courses and workshops during the school breaks for any student that will not be leaving during this period. The School will also provide a course called "Band Practical", which is aimed at young bands that are already formed but who wish to expand their horizons, either by correcting sound problems, widening their repertoire, or just receiving guidance on their overall performance."

The opening course on drumming will begin in the first week of February at a likely cost of $100.00 for the ten-week course, the cost to include all hand-outs and back-up material. Individual drumming lessons are also available in the usual Academy one-on-one situation. Full details from the Academy office.

The Academy CD library is open with immediate effect. There are currently around 500 CDs available but we intend to add to the stock on a regular basis. There is a $10.00 registration fee and discs may then be borrowed at $1.00 per two discs. 3) ROSES AND RASPBERRIES
ZESA !!! enough is enough !!!

We have been without electricity for 45 hours in the last seven days and we still have none today after eight hours, and these are all scheduled cuts, not faults. Town in the same period has had cuts of no more than ten hours, friends in other areas have had occasional cuts of four hours - and there are still some who get no cuts at all.

It's insupportable and I wonder why we sit back and tolerate it. Meanwhile ABUZ is circulating a petition attacking the City Council for announcing that it wishes to hold rates and charges at the same level as last year! Domestic rates seem to me not unreasonable since the City has to recover from close to ten years of under-funding, and it's not so long ago that in real terms we were paying no more than a dollar a month! And yet it's under attack, not ZESA for its charges and its total failure to deliver an adequate service.

We're told that there simply isn't enough power for everyone. If that is the case, then we have to have cuts but it leaves several questions:
Why are the current cuts so much worse than they were a couple of months ago when we were warned to expect long cuts because of maintenance at Kariba?
Why are the cuts so inequitably distributed?
Why are certain areas completely exempt?
Why can the centre of town not take its share of cuts? If the shopping centres can be cut off, what is different about the town centre other than numbers?
My complaint is ultimately about convenience. I can't do what I want to do when I want to do it without electricity, but one of the proprietors at Ascot said the other day that she was seriously considering closing down as she simply cannot run a business in these circumstances. There must be many more like her.

There must be better ways of handling the power shortage than this. Is it not time that we demanded that ZESA hold public meetings at which it explains its problems and the unfairness of its power cut schedules? - and perhaps sought advice from the larger community as to how it might better cope?

Perhaps we should get a group together to insist that ZESA:
a) tell us more, and
b) distribute the cuts more equitably - I refuse to call it load-shedding!

5) CONDOLENCES/ IN MEMORIUM/ WREATH FUNDS

I am so shocked to read of Irene Beets passing. I have been gone from Bulawayo for too long..... I didn't even know that Irene was ill. My deepest sympathy to Alf and her family on their great loss. We had such memorable times at the Byo Quilters Guild, and she worked so hard to make it fun and a success. They are going to miss her too. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Irene Beets ( Senior ) Beloved daughter of Olive Senior & sister & aunt of Lynda McCarthy & family. Passed away on 15th January 2010 after her battle with cancer. At peace now, no more pain or suffering but will be sorely missed & loved always by all the family

In loving memory of Sandra Elaine Nell, who passed away on 24 Jan 2008, mother to Carl & Kim, granny to Michaela and Levi

Remembrance is a golden chain
Death tries to break, all in vain,
To have, to love, and then to part
Is the greatest sorrow of the heart.
The years may wipe out many things,
But this they wipe out never-
The memory of those happy days
When we were all together.
As we loved you, so we miss you;
In our memories you are near.
Loved, remembered, longed for always,
Treasured with a love sincere.
You are where we cannot see you,
And your voice we cannot hear;
Yet we know you walk beside each of us,
Never absent, always near.

In loving memory of Sandra Elaine Nell, dearly loved sister of Kathy, Christine and Toby

In the quiet of the evening
I sit and think of you,
I open up my memory book,
Of the things we used to do,
And as I turn the pages,
My eyes are filled with tears,
For, although I have my memories,
I can't hold back the years
Our hearts are filled with memories
Which we gather through the years
All the happy times we shared,
Are now treasured souvenirs.

BULAWAYO PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION

JANUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER

The Chairman of the Bulawayo Publicity Association would like to thank you for your continued support throughout the years, which has been greatly valued. Mr Stephens reminded members that the year 2010 has a particular resonance in southern Africa and that we need to keep the opportunities that this year will present foremost in our minds. He said that it will not be a golden year in Zimbabwe, but that it will certainly have a silver lining The Chinese have a saying 'Where there is crisis there is opportunity' There is also another piece of sage advice 'make lemonade from lemons'

To help you do this, please make use of our offer to promote your business and future plans for diversification and development, etc. Help us to you

There has been an increase of all Matopo National Parks accommodation, however entry fees remain the same, with locals paying US$3 for adults and half price for children. Adults regional pay US$12 and children paying US$8. Foreigners pay US$15 for adults and US$8 for children. For further information you can contact Bulawayo Publicity Association on 60867/72969 or National Parks office on 63646/65592.

The Bulawayo Publicity Association has received a very generous donation from Senatar Coaches, for which it is most grateful. Senatar runs a daily service between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls and Bulawayo and Messina return. Tel 471456. A further donation in the form of fuel has been offered by Mr Stead of the Bulawayo Club, which will be very welcome.

The Natural History Museum intends to revive the Historic Buildings Advisory Committee. The NMMZ Act 25/11 and Municipal bylaws provide for the protection and preservation of National historic buildings, but unfortunately few buildings have been declared National Monuments, which make them vulnerable to structural changes. The stakeholders present at the meeting held in October 2009 agreed that it was important to preserve our heritage in the form of historic buildings and efforts would be made to promote public awareness of this unique heritage. The Museum would welcome organisation and members of the public who would be interested in becoming involved in this project. The Bulawayo Publicity Association will of course, do what it can to assist.

It has been observed that vendors in Bulawayo are offering for sale orchids, tree ferns, flame Lilies, cycads and other rare plants which are protected species under the National Parks & Wildlife Act. These vendors should be reported to National Parks, police or members of the Matopo Conservation Society of Mr Stephens was a long time Chairman. Our unique environmental heritage is being denuded and we need to protect it.

The Academy of Music Coffee Shop is open on Weekdays from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m and on Saturday mornings to early afternoon. For you information The Academy now has a CD library open which has about 500 CDs available.

WE WISH YOU MANY BLESSINGS IN THE NEW YEAR.

Many of you will have heard that Wayne Stanton recently underwent brain surgery to remove a tumour practically the size of a tennis ball. He has now been released from Milpark hospital, after a traumatic time in ICU. Thank you to everyone for you kind words and offers of help.

Wayne is still in South Africa pending radium and chemotherapy treatment, due to commence mid February. And this is where family and friends would greatly appreciate your help. We are trying to raise the necessary funds to finance the next phase of treatment. Any contribution you are able to give, however small, would be appreciated enormously.

More information concerning Wayne and bank details can be found if you join the facebook group - Wayne Stanton Medical Fund. Or if you would prefer to deposit monies into Mary and Wayne's Bulawayo account: CBZ Bank Limited, Belmont Branch, Acc name: Wayne Stanton Safaris, Acc no: 02622583150010.

Dear Mags,
I would like to thank you so very much for including my request for information on Frogs and Toads earlier this rainy season. Whilst I particularly singled out the African Giant Bull frog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), which appears to have re-established itself, we gained new insights into previously unknown distribution areas, for other species. One of particular interest. The response was almost overwhelming, and I did reply to each and every response. Thank you so very much for your interest, some of the responses were from countries outside our borders. May I please remind all that 2% of our frogs and toads are being re-classified as endangered or critically endangered every year. I will remind all when the next season starts later this year. Thank you, and Morning Mirror.
Regards,
Rob Hopkins

Good morning and all the best for 2010 to those whom I have not seen this year yet.

I am writing to everyone on my mailing list to ask if you can consider a number of things:-

1. Firstly, will you please consider playing in the Golf Day we are arranging for Wednesday at Bulawayo Country Club. We are fundraising for the Girls Youth Olympic Team who are traveling to South Africa on the 17th of February to play in the Qualifiers Tournament. Only one team per continent can go to compete in the actual Youth Olympics in Singapore in August, and we have high hopes for this team. It would also be great if you could get other people to come play. There is a fish and chips dinner afterwards kindly sponsored by Pococks which is free for players and their spouses. Anyone can come for the dinner (for a small fee) but will have to book. The competition is Individual Stableford.

2. Secondly, we are looking for sponsors of the tee-boxes at $150. Even two companies can share a tee-box. Please contact myself or Ray.

3. Thirdly, if anyone would be kind enough to give any cash donations towards Hockey Association of Zimbabwe to help towards the expenses, please contact me on 242221 or Gavin Stephens at PPC (Treasurer of HAZ). Any amount would be most gratefully appreciated.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated and we would hope that you will pass the word around. We are also looking for any small prize donations to run a raffle. Unfortunately, the selection of the girls team was delayed until the 17th of January, so we are operating in a very short time period to raise funds.

Matabeleland are proud to say that out of the 8 girls who travelled to Harare for trials, we have 6 girls who were selected for the team:-
Melissa Sibanda Sian Williams Hayley Kitto Tilly Randle Hana Petker Lauren Williams (non-traveling reserve)
Thanks for your time.

Please may I put an add into the mirror for next week,I am actually doing it on behalf of a friend of mine, who is a pensioner..,his name is David Lemon,he was the commissioner of police in Bulawayo from 1998 to 19982,he was also stationed at Kariba, Marandellas, plus a few other places around Rhodesia- Zimbabwe.

Over the past few years,he has done some really crazy ventures in Zimbabwe, then written books about his adventures.

Blood,Sweat and Lions , was based on his walk from Kariba to Binga along the lake edge, then Hobo Rows Kariba, was about his trip in a rowing boat, from Kariba to Binga and back again.

This year in May,he plans to row from Kariba to as close to the Vic Falls as he can get,and back in a Kyack,he wants to buy a kyack in Zimbabwe for the trip, hence the add in the mirror
Can any one please help me out,I would like to buy a Kyack, for a venture on Kariba in June this year.If you have one that I can buy, please send me an e mail at lemonfolk@aol.com with a price..
I will get some one in Bulawayo or Harare to have a look at it, before I make you a definite offer.Look forward to hearing from you soon David.

PROPERTIES FOR SALE:
AUSTRALIA - Property Prices Set to Soar

Property prices across Australia have jumped almost 6 percent this year and will continue to rise even in the country's most expensive suburbs, experts have said. The average Australian home has gained $28,194 in value since January this year and is now worth almost half a million dollars at $477,865, according to the RP Data-Rismark Home Value Index.

The Market is Heating Up - This is the Time to Invest

We had an excellent response to our last ad in the Morning Mirror, with a number of property investors wanting to invest in property in Australia. We are currently working with these investors from southern Africa on Joint Venture Projects whereby they put a deposit into one of our residential developments & we offer 20% returns on the amount invested. At the end of the development phase, the investor owns the property outright. Since the recession, banks have tightened up on lending making opening up new tracts of residential land difficult for developers. As a result, Wealth Acceleration Group began looking at additional ways to fund our projects. We believe that this Joint Venture Project offers investors an excellent strategy to get into property in Australia.

We intend making a trip to South Africa to meet with investors in JHB/DBN/CT to discuss all the details of the JV. Alternatively, investors are welcome to come to Australia, meet with us & look at the projects for themselves.

For more information contact: Karin Bailey Wealth Acceleration Group kb@wag-online.com.au www.wag-online.com

18) TUITION

Tuition:

Private tuition given in English language and literature from the beginning to A Level by experienced and qualified teacher. Phone 242321

Is your son or daughter having difficulty with O or A Level Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry?

Do the A Level classes contain 30 students rather than 10? Classes this size do not allow for much individual help.

If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help.
Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution.
I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
Please contact ColRose Consultants and ask to speak to Colin.

ZIMGLOBAL offers low cost, hassle free international dialing using VOIP 'call back' technology from your current LAND LINE telephone number from anywhere in Zimbabwe. We have a number of clients living in Bulawayo currently on our books already and the feedback has been very positive.

An example of our call rates are:

15c per min to UK and USA; 15c per min to Canada 16c per min to Australia and most European countries; 18c per min to China; 18c per min to India; 20c per min to RSA and Zambia; 24c per min to Botswana and Mozambique

* calls to international land lines; international cell phone rates available on our website*
This equates to an average of 26%-50% less on what you would pay using normal telcoms in Zimbabwe. Calls through us are charged for the first 30 seconds once you receive your call back and in 6 second increments thereafter.
Dialing international cell phones with this system is effortless and a lot cheaper than dialing direct.
NO new equipment is needed and there are NO join up or monthly fees. We work as a pre-paid service and you will have access to your account online 24 hours a day to view your itemized call log.
What you pay for is what you get to spend on 'talk time'. e.g. for only $10 you get approximately 70 minutes talk time to land line phones in the USA and UK; 60 minutes 'talk time' to Australia and most of Europe!
In addition, our service helps to by-pass the usually congested lines out of Zimbabwe and the lines are stable and clear. (No more straining of your dialing finger to get an outside line and no more 'dropped' calls!) If it all sounds 'too good to be true' ...
Please sign up for a FREE TRIAL on our website: www.ZimGlobal.net or contact Leanne or Paul on 497 572 or 0913 189 811 or e-mail info@zimglobal.net Many thanks and we hope we can be of service to you.
